We was there in June, it rained a lot in Shiragawa-Go making the atmosphere so charming. The best thing about Kidoya is that it is close to the entrance of the village, so we didn't have to carry our big bags for long. Friendly host with good English skill, comfortable futon, perfect room temperature, great dinner and breakfast, discount ticket... More

My partner and I stayed at Kidoya for 1 night during our 3wk Japan trip & our 1 night in Shirakawa. Check in is from 3pm & check out at 9am, so we explored the village on the day of arrival and left early the next morning. The ryokan is exactly as explained, although we were a little disappointed in... More

Before coming, I read about how such houses are old houses, not well heated etc. So we were preparing for a stay at a somewhat dilapidated farmhouse, deliberately kept that way to preserve the authenticity of such period buildings. Well, we were in for a surprise. Kidoya is a substantial building with three rooms to rent. The room was okay... More

We had a lovely stay at this basic, family run inn. The food was amazing - our favorites were the hida beef and Gifu miso. The appeal of staying here was more about getting to enjoy Shirakawa-go without the bus loads of tourists. There's also an onsen-ryokan in the village, so should you want something more luxurious, you can stay... More

The Ryokan is very easy to find. Rooms are clean and the futon is thick and nice to sleep in on a winter's day, a heater is provided, can sleep well. Dinner is served at 6pm and Breakfast is served at 730am. You will surely be getting an experience here. Onsen is not far away.

Highlight of our trip was visiting this area. I was initially disappointed when we tried to book the higher rated Gassho houses and they were all sold out. But Kidoya was perfectly fine, infact they were faultless - friendly, kind, delicious food (not that much beef however) and warm beds. Like most heaters in Japan, they turn off every four... More

Pleasant overnight stay, although I didn't enjoy the oily smell of the heater much. The hosts were patient and friendly, and the residence in general had a nice atmosphere. The downside is that guests are only allowed to roam within their room, main hallway, eating room and the common bath. Mealtimes (breakfast and dinner) are held in the eating room... More

Good that my hostel in Takayama helped me to call around the farmhouse in Shirakawago and found Kidoya has a room available. Good that the popular farmhouses are all full and I like Kidoya as it was far away from the 'central' point, actually just a road behind. Although it is a traditional farmhouse with simple and basic room (room... More

I haven't stayed in any other Gassho Zukuris, thus i can't comment if this is "authentic" enough or not. However, the service is excellent and i must thank the lady who runs this place. We were late due to some messed up bus scheduled during the peak season and reached there during a heavy snow night (and after dark obviously).... More

I decided to stay overnight in Shirakawa-go for a true gassho farmhouse experience. Unfortunately, this was not the place for that. While the hosts are nice enough, the atmosphere inside the house (decor, arrangement, etc) suggests nothing of the history that makes gassho houses worthy of their UNESCO status. Inside the house, I found it difficult to see any gassho... More
