One of the cheapest lodgings in Sounkyo. The hotel is fairly old though. Two building, one is western style, the other one is Japan style. Staffs are kind but almost zero English. So bring a dictionary if you go here. There is a table tennis room, at the lobby. Close to sounkyo ice festival site.

Stayed at this hotel from 16 to 18 Feb 2017. The room, curtains, carpet, walls and corridors reeked of smoke. Not good if you are a non-smoker, have kids or have a breathing condition like asthma. We did complain to the front desk and was told that there is no such thing as a "smoke free" room in the hotel....

Stayed for two nights. The place is fine. Nothing special but nothing bad. You do need to know people smoke inside the hotel lobby. I enjoyed the onsen. It opens long hours. Has a small open-air section and a big indoor bath. Also a cold bath.

This is a 100% SMOKING hotel. It was listed nowhere online that smoking was allowed throughout the hotel (it makes the no-smoking signs on the bedside tables ironic artwork). I unfortunately booked two nights here with a great rate, but quickly discovered why the rate was so good. While the staff is very friendly and offered me a new room,...

Room is ok but has a slight cigarette smoke smell along the hallways. Room is spacious and comfortable. Onsen is available to guests. Yukatas are available in the room for wearing to the onsen. The entry to the hotel is a bit hard to find.

The main reason for a poor rating, is the inescapable smell of cigarettes throughout the whole hotel. Japan is light years behind most modern countries when it comes to allowing smoking in hotels e.g. throughout public areas and within the all hotel rooms (at this hotel). The first room we were given the stench of smoke was eye watering. We...

I am not typically cranky or fussy about little details, but I was not amused when I was woken up at 6:30 am by new age chanting on a speaker IN OUR ROOM! As I was still suffering from jet lag, I was looking forward to waking up on my own terms. When I went to the reception to complain...

Sounkyo's lodging is on the high side, between choosing a bed and breakfast (with photos that showed the conditions were less than clean) and an old mainstream hotel, I chose the latter. Location: It is located off the highway, on the boundary of the Sounkyo town. This makes walking on foot to the ropeway and the town amenities (convenience store,...

If you have to stay here, definitely make sure you get to stay at the new wing. The old wing reeks of cigarette smell. The food is mediocre and the onsen is lousy. If you must stay one night and more to Kogen Spa for the same price and Kogen comes with breakfast and dinner thrown in.
