We stayed at Shimaya Ryokan for one night to visit the snow monkey park. We received the best service experienced during our total holiday. Mr. Ichiro Yumoto drove us to the park and picked us up later on. He provided us with boots and in the meantime dried our wet shoes. We enjoyed our excellent meals at the ryokan. And... More

This was the highlight of our holiday, we went to Yudanaka for the Snow monkeys and discovered the best family run hotel in Japan. We had the real Japanese experience, amazing food and the best service you could hope for. Nothing was any trouble, the room was perfect and we had a great night at the town festival with all... We stayed here to visit the Snow Monkeys and Shibu Onsen Spa town, the accommodation is basic but all that you need. Food was great and the owner really does go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable. He's a wealth of knowledge on the area and even dropped us off at the park! We walked back from the... This is an intriguing little ryokan. It is not luxurious but a wonderful place to stay. The owner hosts are very helpful and will drive you to the Snow Monkey Park (and collect if you wish), although we walked back. They will also offer advice on what else to do in the area. Obuse is well worth a visit, in... More

This was an enjoyable experience with very friendly and helpful staff, nice breakfast and interesting Onsen experience. We stayed at this hotel while we explored Nagano, the trains are quite simple and the hotel was only a short walk from the train station (though it took a bit of effort getting it to show on google maps). The hotel owner... More

On arrival we got a pick up from the train station. (its not far but handy if you have big bags). As we entered the ryokan the owners gave us tons and tons of info on the monkeys, breakfast, monkeys, onsen, Tokyo, Kyoto, basically everything that was japan related:) We stayed here in March and it was still cold. Our hosts could not have been more helpful and we had the most wonderful Japanese meal, in fact it was more like a multi course banquet, each element was beautifully presented. The rooms are clean compact and give you a taste of traditional Japanese living. All in all a fascinating visit.

Do not be fooled by what appears to be a shabby exterior. This place is fab. It is a charming traditional ryokan. The owners could not be more helpful. We were made to feel very welcome. The food was fantastic. Ideally placed for exploring the area. We truly feel that we have experienced japanese hospitality at its best.

In my 5 week travel through Japan this was definitely one of my favorite places. It gave me a chance to have a look into the traditional side of Japan. I can really recommend it. It was pretty quiet but that was exactly what i needed after coming from the sensory overloading Tokio. The hotel is not very new but... More

We had a great and exciting time in Yudanaka, and that was 110% thanks to our wonderful host. The hotel itself is charming, clean, comfy and very japanese. Our room had tatami floor and a lovely little balcony from which we could see the mountains. Mr. Yumata, the owner, is extremely friendly and helpful, he offered to drive us to... More
