We can confirm everything that has been written about Shimaya. We had a wonderful stay thanks to the inn keepers who gave us the best advice on food, touring, trains etc., and then shuttled us to and fro. We bathed every night in the "public" onsens which were very nice and clean. The property is older and the decor is...

This Ryokan is all about the service. The owners pick up, drop off, give advice, dries you shoes and are just super nice. The facilities is bit old and tired, but it did not effect the experience of our stay. We booked the private onsen one evening and it was a fun experience for the hole family to sit in...

Visiting Yudanaka onsen was probably the highlight of our trip to Japan. The staff picked us up from the train station, and drove us to the snow monkey park and back. There is a slight language barrier, but they were very friendly and patient with us - giving us local area maps, even menus for nearby restaurants, and calling them...

This place is not the Intercontinental by any means. For Westerners, it will definitely seem quirky with the pixie-sized shoes at the door, the automated piano at breakfast and the traditional ryokan tatami matt rooms. But Shimaya is to Japanese culture what the Onsen was to our cold bodies: an amazing and worthwhile immersion. The staff at Shimaya are fantastic...

Great location, close to the train station and with an excellent bar/restaurant (Hakko) within walking distance. The really friendly owners insist on driving you to the entrance of the snow monkey park (it's a further 30 min walk to get to the monkeys from here), picking you up and taking you to the train station! They have both public and...

Starting with a super warm welcome from husband and wife team, we were given great information about the local area, how to access the monkey park and Osaka, our next destination. Room was great and the experience equally as good. Our hosts provided gum boots and a ride to and from the monkey park - making our visit easy and...

The owner Mr Yumoto is so kind and generous. He helped us out on our schedule heading to Shirakawa Village and even trying to contact the bus centre for us. He also offer free ride and pick up to/from the Monkey Park.

If you're looking for something luxurious, look elsewhere. But if you want to experience local Japanese hospitality, this is the place to go. Shimaya is run by a family and we were well looked after between the owners and their daughter. This is more of a bed and breakfast type place. We stayed for one night to see the snow...

Spent a night at Shimaya in order to visit the famous Snow Monkeys of Yamanouchi. We were not disappointed. The host, Mr Yumoto, was extremely hospitable, and gave us great tips for the hike to see the snow monkeys. We enjoyed the onsen experience and emerged thoroughly refreshed!
