Great hotel with good facilities, friendly helpful staff, spotlessly clean and very good food. Good rates on lift passes and good ski equipment hire - not your lively apres ski type hotel if that's what you want, it's a great quality local quiet establishment.
Out of all the hotels in Shiga Kogen, this is the place to be. Full stop. Let's start with the obvious, the one thing you'll notice before even entering the lovely hotel itself. Location. No matter where you come from or where you wish to go, hotel Shirakabaso cannot be beaten. Each and every bus passes the hotel and stops just across the road. With all those skiing gear you carry, there is no way you could overemphasize the importance of location, and this is where no hotel in the area can even begin to compete. One thing you should keep in mind, though, is that there is hardly anywhere to go in the evenings (no restaurants, bars, etc.), but this is the case with practically everywhere in the Shiga Kogen area. But oh, location is only the beginning. The moment you enter Shirakabaso, you are greeted by the most gentlehearted staff you could ever imagine. Each and every one of these lovely people will go over the top to make you feel like home in their hotel. And once you enter the room (we stayed in the smaller Japanese style), you wish you could just move in permanently. Everywhere is super beautiful, spotlessly clean and there is plenty of space for you and your luggage (please remember the country you're in!). But do take my word for this: you'll WANT to leave the room, since there is an ever better place waiting for you. The onsen. There is nothing better in this world than relaxing in an outdoor onsen, surrounded by pure white snow, after a full day of skiing. I would be there still, if it wasn't for all those lovely meals waiting for me. The food in Shirakabaso is absolutely lovely. Nothing overly fancy, but real, hearty, Japanese home cooking that tastes absolutely amazing after a day outdoors. All accompanied by cold local beer and some lovely sake from a brewery just a short bus ride away. And if you remain hungry (you won't!), the lobby has a well equipped little store selling all kinds of snacks and, of course, beer and sake at very reasonable prices. If you are planning to go skiing (or hiking!) in Shiga Kogen, I warmly recommend staying in the hotel Shirakabaso. Maybe we'll even get to share a nice cold bottle of sake together, since I know this is where I'll be staying when travelling back to this lovely area.…
The moment we stepped into the hotel, we feel their hospitality. The young lady at the reception (sorry I forgot her name) is good in English, and more important, she is sincere when she speaks to you. Other staff we encountered are also professional and well mannered. I booked a 10 tatami room for my family of 4. The room is very cleaned and spacious, well equipped to make you stay comfortably. The breakfast and dinner is delicious, the portion is very generous. We stayed there for 3 nights, and the food is not repeated. There are not many items in the drinks menu, but they are all well selected. The public bath is clean with an open bath as well. There are two private baths which can use for free of charge and no need to book. The common area are comfortable and equipped with water, magazines, games etc. Actually the whole hotel is well designed sand properly maintained. The ski room is spacious and clean, with a ski rental shop as well. There is a small ski field with walkable distance, or you can take the free shuttle bus to go to other ski fields. It is a pity that this year snow is not enough but staying in Shirakabaso had made our ski trip more enjoyable. If we come to Shigakogen again, we definitely will stay in this hotel again.…
We enjoyed our stay during our ski trip. The resort is located at a convenient place to ski and staff is very friendly to give lots of advice and help. We especially enjoyed playing at table tennis room at evening. Will stay again when we come back ski.
