We visited in the off season, but still had a fantastic couple of days. The were plenty of beautiful walks into the stunning Japanese mountains, as well as delicious food and wonderful tradition baths at the hotel.
I visited the Kumanoyu hotel in the summer for a hiking trip and I was truly amazed by its charm. It is spotlessly clean and tidy, and I really enjoyed its Japanese culture aspects - be it the onsen (including an outdoor area perfect for the summer), the Japanese-style bedrooms, or the incredible multi-course meals including delicacies such as blue fin tuna. The staff were incredibly helpful and helped us organise trips in the area (e.g. to the snow monkey sanctuary in Nagano). The hotel is also located very close (~ a few hundred meters) to ski lifts and I hope that I can someday come back here to ski during the winter!
Had a wonderful time at this hotel. The rooms are nice, clean, and decorated in Japanese style. Onsen is really great and authentic (you can taste the sulfur!) and is exactly what I needed after a day of hiking at the nearby mountains.
I have been to this hotel twice already and both times had a wonderful experience. Staff are friendly and the hotel has a perfect balance of Japanese and western hotel. The rooms are clean and tidy, the onsen or hot spring is authentic. Food was definitely the highlight, every meal was fantastic with one menu having wagyu and bluefin tuna together.
What a special place to spend a few days. The beauty of the Japanese mountainside is something to behold. Relaxing in the evening with a warm sulphur bath after a five star kaiseki banquet what else can a human reasonably desire?
