The Kussharoko Hotel is a bit off the beaten path. It may be intimidating at first for western travelers but the woman running it is very kind and all the rooms overlook the lake. The hotel may feel a bit outdated and old but the rooms are traditional, clean and charming tatami mats. Our room had its own bathroom but we saw other units that only had beds and required you to use the public bath. We came during winter and had an amazing view of swans, ducks, and eagles from our room. The onsen is nice though the changing room feels a bit dirty and there is some mold on the ceiling tiles. I really enjoyed the onsen with the view of the lake and swans. I believe it is naturally heated. Breakfast was provided. I believe there are only a few other couples staying here this weekend in February. I would certainly come back here since it is for the budget traveler if you are looking for a true locals experience. If you have more refined taste or are less adventurous I would suggest a more expensive hotel nearby.

very low price plan, ¥4,000. room is lake front, that's very beautiful view. they also have hot spa. but accommodation is so old building, decrepit and not so cleaner, so if you are tidy, it can't recommend to stay. however you can feel Showa atmosphere(old Japanese culture).

great location however... went there in the off season and was the only guest (the scenery, wonderful, and hotel atmosphere, bererft of guests and owners, was reminiscent of the Shining... didn't get to see bloody sisters in the corridor though). I found the experience very expensive for what was provided: 8000 yen (approx 60€uros) for a good room (well heated) with a superb view but no meals whatsoever and no wifi as compared to the ryokan i went to next (5000 yen with excellent breakfast and perfect wifi, in house onsen as well, great and helpful innkeepersand a location not quite as nice but not bad either).

This hotel has seen better days and is looking a little tired and run down. While the room had taps there was no water coming through, hot or cold. it's situated on the lake which is pretty to look out over, if you have a lake view room. Meal was good. The Onsen was OK but a little dirty. It's location is also pretty remote with nothing much around within walking distance. At the right price it's probably fine but it won't be your most memorable place to stay.
