A very comfortable hotel with lovely sea-themed decor. Fantastic breakfasts. The staff looked after us really well. If you get a sea view room the views are lovely, if you don't there is a tower with a panoramic view of the town, surrounding peaks and the sea, where you can sit at a table and have a nice drink with the nice views. The room was clean and the air conditioning was effective, and there was a large bathroom. The town itself is small and friendly, with several restaurants, a supermarket, pharmacy and some cashpoints. There are two beaches, one has beach umbrellas and a lifeguard. On a still day there's good snorkelling near the rocks where you will see pretty fish. On a windy day the sea is still safe near the smaller beach, but local children swim in the harbour where it's less choppy.

Report on Our Stay at Hotel do Mar, Azores

Our stay at Hotel do Mar on the Azores was quite pleasant. The location is convenient with free parking available right in front of the hotel. If the front parking spots are occupied, there are additional parking spaces available around the hotel.

The room we stayed in was clean and spacious enough for two adults. The bathroom was also clean and well-maintained. One notable feature was the refrigerator, which was extremely quiet; we couldn't hear it at all during the night. The surroundings were very peaceful, especially at night. Even though our room was ocean-facing on the first floor, we couldn't hear the ocean at all—it was completely quiet, except for the occasional noise from neighboring guests. Unfortunately, every evening after 11:00 PM, our neighbors would take showers, loud discussions, which lasted until around 11:45 PM almost mid night. This disrupted our rest, as the noise was quite noticeable.

I would recommend that the hotel staff remind guests of the hotel’s quiet hours during check-in. It would be helpful if everyone could be more considerate after 10:00 PM, allowing all guests to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing stay.

The breakfast offered at the hotel was relatively good. I didn't try the coffee myself, as I had read reviews beforehand that mentioned the coffee wasn’t very satisfying. Based on those reviews, I brought my own coffee and condensed milk from home. So, while I can't comment on the actual taste of the hotel's coffee, I was prepared based on what I had read.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel. It offers a nice, relaxed atmosphere with perfect ocean views and is an excellent starting point for daily excursions around the island.

Pretty average experience all round, nothing outstanding. In need of some updating. Didn't like the fact the room safe was only available if you paid a nominal extra fee (really? Just include it in the room price). Pool was okayish, but tiling to floor around it was covered in weeds. Not ideal with bare feet. No coffee or milk in room... it's about time they did. Nothing massively bad but sadly the attention to detail was seriously lacking. Even the staff on the front desk weren't engaging. At check out I complained that the shower didn't work. " what room number? " she said. I told her, then nothing, not even "I hope you had a good stay", or "goodbye have a safe trip". Sums it up really.

The hotel itself was decent, showing some age in the pool area. Staff was friendly. The only thing that garnered a 2 star rating is their policies. My wife and I were ending a week long family vacation with our son and his wife and a 15 year old grandaughter. I booked two rooms, one a Suite. Pictures clearly showed that the main room of the suite contained a couch bed and trundle bed that would accomidate our grandaughter for the night.

When we arrived they said that she could not utilize the couch bed as they restricted that to children under 12, so we were forced to pay for an additional room! Worse was the closet in the suite contained all the bedding materials and pillows necessary to make a comfortable sleep.

I have traved extensively and NEVER ran into this before. She didn't want to sleep alone, which required my wife to join her for the night. I wrote them when we returned home and their reply was Too bad, that is our policy. In many places you need to be at least 16 to book a room.

On September 24, 2024, we arrived late at night at the Do Mar hotel in Povoação, after a significant delay with our plane. Originally, the landing was scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Still from home I had sent an email to the hotel asking if there would be any restaurants or snack bars open on arrival. The response I received was that it would be better to eat at McDonald's first and then drive to the hotel, while the hotel itself has a snack bar open until 11pm.

Upon arrival the reception was reasonable. Breakfast the next morning was disappointing. The photos on the website give a totally different impression than reality. Pineapple is grown on São Miguel for example, but during our stay we did not see pineapple one morning, which would have been a nice addition. However, this is a 4-star hotel, where certain expectations apply. The staff at reception did not offer any kind of greeting when we passed. A simple "good morning" or "good evening" was apparently too much to ask. Although one was not unfriendly when we asked for something, the hospitality was completely lacking.

The rooms, which we knew were dated, were generally clean. However, for longer stays than a midweek, the room hardly offers space for luggage, especially in the bathroom. From the second night, a pipe from the air conditioning began to make noises, which made sleeping impossible. After two nights we were allocated another room, without us asking for it. It was a disabled room, which was larger but still offered little space for our belongings, especially in the bathroom. Moreover, there was an unbearable musty smell in the bathroom, especially at night. We had to keep the bathroom door closed to keep the smell out of the room. There was also a musty smell elsewhere in the hotel, despite a diffuser at the reception.

After two nights in this room we decided to leave for another hotel, on our own initiative. We are now staying at hotel Verde Mar & Spa, where we were warmly welcomed, as we should.

To sum up: hotel Do Mar definitely does not deserve 4 stars. A comfortable stay during your holiday is essential, but that doesn't seem to be the case at this hotel. When we checked out two nights earlier, nothing was asked, just a “thank you and goodbye.” This was a disappointing experience.

Quiet hotel in front of the sea, with free parking around it and with several restaurants and supermarkets within a 5-minute walk.
The rooms and bathroom are good although they need a renovation. They need to improve the general cleanliness of the room (used coffee cups that are not removed overnight, soaps that are not replenished, etc.)
It has a very nice outdoor pool with a jacuzzi.
The breakfast is very fair, there is hardly any variety.

We really appreciated the welcome of the staff, the size of our room, its terrace overlooking the sea and the cleanliness of the place. We spent 6 nights there in complete peace and quiet. The breakfast is complete and of good quality served as a buffet. On the other hand, we found that the snack was much too expensive compared to what was served and the cocktails were very bland. It's a real shame because the bar area is welcoming but the hotel can improve on these points.
We recommend this establishment which has very good value for money.

Sweet boutique hotel with awesome views.

Our ocean view room was well equipped with comfortable beds/pillows and a large balcony that we used in the evening after a busy day exploring Sao Miguel. Beautiful scenery and listening to the ocean at night was very soothing.

Breakfast was tasty but the breakfast room/lobby could use some ambiance (soft music, more comfy lounge chairs?).

Staff were pleasant and helpful overall.

Couple who own the snack bar at the pier were very friendly and welcoming if you want to sit there on warm days and enjoy the outdoor pool and gorgeous scenery.

Good hotel if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful rest.

Me and my partner just got back from a week here and we were very impressed by the hotel. It's a great place to stay in a little town to explore the island. The breakfast was a typical buffet style with bread, ham, cheese, cereal, eggs and bacon. The coffee is from a machine like most hotel seem to do these days not sure why it will be classed as poor by some people. We had a suite and it's quite big. It's clean and comfortable and has what you need. I appreciate that maybe some of the decor is a little bit older but this is not a five-star boutique hotel. We thought it was quite a quaint place and the turret is a great place to sit and enjoy the views. It seems some people don't understand the star rating on a hotel. They think it means level of luxury when it actually means the services that are offered. The staff were very friendly, this is a great location right on the front by the harbour. We were out of season and it was relatively quiet in the bar area etc but we had a fabulous time as it was a break from the hustle and bustle of every day life. The pool was cold but most are these days, and it is quite small but we never really used it that much. I did however use the hot tub jacuzzi several times which was really nice. Drink prices in the hotel are good particularly the cocktails. This hotel more than suited our needs for a week and I would recommend the place, but just don't expect a 5 Star boutique hotel.

Small hotel right on the marina at Povoacao. Clean, tidy, friendly helpful staff. Room had a harbour view which was lovely, and it was very comfortable and just right for our week's stay. Bar downstairs was quiet most nights, as is the town itself, but they did a good selection of local beers and wines and many people ate there in the evening (bar snack type meals). Breakfast was a good choice of eggs, bacon, many different breads, yoghurt, juice and coffee so something to cover everyone's requirements. Reception is manned 24 hours and the can help with suggestions of places to go etc.

Its part of a chain of about 5 hotels around the islands and would stay in others based on this stay in Povoacao.
