I stayed here for four nights at the end of May for work. The building is nearly 100 years old and has great character. I was in a lovely large room with a balcony facing the sea (room 308). The surroundings are lovely and peaceful. It takes five minutes to walk to the sea and is not far from Hove which is very beautiful too.

We booked a room very spontaneously - called in on a wednesday to check availability for saturday the same week. The woman answering the phone turned out to most likely be the same woman who was out waitress while we were there, so it seems like the staff has multiple roles. Either way, the booking went smooth, we were asked if we wanted to participate in the "Viltaften med kortreist mat", which of course we wanted! They also offered a wine pack. On arrival the hotel was a pleasent view, with a red carpet and candlelights all over. I just absolutely loved the over all impression and the fact that the hotel seemed very intimate! The room was of a good size and the beds gave a good nights sleep. Before dinner there were welcome drinks and finger food in the foyer, and at dinner we were placed around big round tables with other guests. It seemed that the staff had actually placed people after age, which I am not sure of, but it was definitely not a bad thing, even if coincidental. We were told the following day that many of the guests were locals, some knew each other from before and had been participating at these dinners many times before. This all resulted in songs, jokes and storytelling during dinner, and served as extra entertainment and all over more fun :) The meal was such a treat! It was really good value for money and everything tasted just amazing! All the meals were introduced by the organizer, along with the different wines. We were served soup, salmon, risotto, duck, reindeer, sorbet, trollkrem, cloudberry cream and panacotta. WOW! We used the pool and the sauna before checking out the following day, not very big, but it was pleasant and the huge windows allowed for a good view outside. I do wish they had bathrobes and slippers available in the hotel room and not for rent down by the spa. All in all - would most definitely visit again!

The hotel is prettily located. However on arrival the receptionist was not particularly welcoming, and no info about the spa was given. The room was an ok size but the only window was tiny and so high up as to be unable to see out. And it only opened a crack so we couldn't air the very hot room. The bed was very soft and bouncy. And we clearly heard the people in the room above come home and go to bed. At breakfast you could only get black coffee from a machine- if you wanted a cappucino you had to pay more. Considering how much we payed for the room (1400nok) I was very disappointed.

The hotel itself: Although located out in the country, the hotel was rather easy to find. We were well taken care off on arrival. And quickly guided to our rom. We had a Junior Suite inn the main building and it was really classy. Great space for a couple should not be smaller for a three-person family. The staff are utterly serviceminded and really friendly. The restaurant: Good selection for breakfast also with fruit and continental hot food. The restaurant is light and straightforwardly. As a evening restaurant it has adequate selection off light and more extensive dishes. The once we tried tasted excellent although it must bee mentioned that the restaurant is a little bit understaffed (friendly but to long waiting for serving). Enviroment/scenery: The hotel is situated on the beautiful island Tromøy outside the city of Arendal. You can get a glimpse of the ocean, at least from the rooms at the top floor.Although the nearby environment of the hotel is not the most pittoresk, there is only a 5-minute walk down to the waterfront and a spectacular view over the ocean to the horisont. The thing about classy hotels and Tripadvisor is all about how they meet your expectations. The more high-end, the harder to satisfy the customers expectations. Arendal Herregård delivered and we can all in all recommend the hotel for family vacation.

Due to its location and the beautiful building this place has a great potential as a hotel. Unfortunately the hotel did not live up to our expectations. Our room only had a tiny window, leaving us gasping for air in the hot weather, and the cleaning was poor with dusty floors. The food was really not great, we ordered a tapas plate upon arrival and was served a very weird mix of cheap hams, Jarlberg cheese and Ritz crackers. When we asked for some aioli the waiter did not know what it was. Breakfast was rather mediocre, the scrambled eggs were compact and tasteless, bread was stale, the fruit was certainly not bitesized and the rest of the sortiment rather dull. The Spa is lovely apart from the closed sauna, but the massage and hammam treatments were really not worth their money - it was almost like someone patting you on the back. For some reason we had to pay for the room upon arrival. At checkout there was 5-6 of us waiting for the receptionist to get off the phone, and when she finally came she was inpolite and stressed due to the nature of the phone conversation. This place could have so much potential if managed properly but someone needs to take charge and make some serious changes to the way the hotel is run.
