The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Our pick up time for our return flight was 16.30 but the owners very kindly allowed us to keep the room right up to the time we left.
Our room was well equipped with kettle and fridge and we had a glorious sea view.
We had half board and the food was excellent.
Breakfast was basic, There was bread rolls and bread for toast, jam and honey, I think. Tea and coffee and Juice. I'm not a fan of 'full English' so wasn't too fussed that it wasn't on offer. They had beans, and eggs of some form (scrambled or boiled) I prefer the continental meat and cheese but none of this on offer either, unless you like cheese slices or foil triangles. They even ran out of fresh tomato by 9am one day and didn't replenish. We did eat out most days for breakfast.
The hotel is situated on the seafront and therefore has excellent views and access to the small, pebbly stretch of beach. I do advise beach shoes or flip flops walking along this part as the pebbles can be pretty painful and unsteadying and if people have pulled the sunbeds nearly into the sea its tricky to navigate.
The rooms have flat screen TV and I think there was only one English speaking channel while a news channel might have been nice but not essential. There is a useful little shop at the front of the hotel for all your bits and bobs and water.
This really is a good hotel with pleasant and helpful staff. Only a few minor niggles which certainly wouldn't allow to interfere with a grea holiday. Sure, I'd stay there again. Thankyou.
Our experience was it's very clean, we had a Seaview room which is well worth it to get up every morning and open the curtains to a wonderful view, the air conditioning was excellent and nice and quiet.
The staff were very helpful, happy to print off forms, allowed us to stay in our room as we had a late flight, offered to change channels for my son to watch football on the large screen tv, they really couldn't do enough.
The location really is what makes this hotel, the beach and sea is amazing, you are on the edge of the village so everything is within easy walking distance.
We'd recommend booking B&B as food is cheap and there are lots of good restaurants, you can always eat at the hotel without booking and get a better menu. (Half board is a very limited and slightly strange menu)
Although it states breakfast is " continental " we had French toast , eggs , bacon etc every morning as well
The situation is perfect for an easy stroll to bars and restaurants. It has its own supermarket on site and beautiful terraced restaurant
They have a good and reliable taxi service and it's very safe to walk back on your own at night
Nothing at all will be too much trouble. Rooms spotless. Clean towels most days
Safe and air con at extra cost and they have kettle etc in room but you will need to buy own milk and coffee
I recommend hotel 100 per cent.
Stayed for 2 weeks and enjoyed a relaxing time. The beach outside hotel is sandy and the sea is shallow and warm. Evening meals were nicely cooked and was plentiful. Its a short walk from the main bars and tavernas about 5-10 mins.
Would stay there again
The hotel, bar, restaurant, attached snack bar and supermarket are family run by a Greco-Canadian family and boy do they know how to make guests feel welcome. Unlike other reviews we did not experience any rudeness or condenesceing remarks, possibly the British response to other nationalties intonation.
We booked a package via Jet2 and even for a peak week in August the price was very good, The hotel has been modenised in part but, like most comparable hotels from the 80's, still possesses its traditional Greek ambiance but when booking ask for a sea view as the sunrise is spectaular and is on par with many Carribean vistas. When we say sea view it isn't a strip of blue sandwiched between buildings but the WHOLE panoramic view
We stayed B&B and the breakfast was varied and catered for all tastes and ages. We ate at the resturant a couple of times in the evening and the food was delicious and superbly prepared.
The room and hotel were clean but obvioulsy if you had the balcony doors open dust would gather. Linen and towels were changed regularly or upon request and Maria and her team we only to eager to attend to any request from guests. We found even in 35 degree daytime temperaturs air conditioning was not needed but available, like any similar hotels in the Greek islands, at extra cost Safety deposit boxes are also available for a charge..
Location is great it is very quiet and with the sea so close who needs a swimming pool. Alykes town is small and quiet mainly occupied by eateries, gift/beach shops and supermarkets.
Recommended eateries are the grill at the Asteria where the wild boar is stupendous, and for real value for money Pitta Break just around the corner on the main street from the Asteria. Whispers bar for cocktails
Definitely recommend the Astoria for a stay and you wont be disppointed with Alykes town
To address some of the negative comments the hotel is pretty much fully booked for next year with returning customers and its worth noting that the majority of clients during our stay weren't British, However we did meet another couple and their children from UK who have stayed at the Astoria for 22 of the past 26 years so it obviously has something going for it.
In fact we will be joining them for a rturn visit in August 2024
What can I say about this hotel? Just so very lovely indeed! I would not hesitate to stay here again in a heartbeat. The hotel is family run and they are all so wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble and they would do anything for you. They even allowed me to charge my mobility scooter every night. The reception area is so wonderfully Greek with so much character. Yes the hotel is old & dated but I personally loved that. The back of the hotel is the diamond! Literally on the sands/pebbles of the glistening crystal blue waters of the Ionian. You can sit and have anything you desire, served to you by the lovely staff and just while away the hours gazing at the beautiful view. The food and drinks were just lovely. The hotel is Bed & Breakfast based and serves everything you need up until 9.30 am. Pastries, toast, jams, marmalade, croissants, muffins, tea, coffee, juice, water, milk, Nutella, cheese, cold meats and even some hot foods like beans, bacon & eggs. We had a wonderful sea view room and when our other daughter & her husband joined us in our 2nd week, they even gave them the room next door to us. I was so pleasantly surprised by the room. Everything was so clean and comfortable with towels and bedding changed regularly. The air con was fab (€10 per day) and the shower was powerful. I especially loved the bathroom cabinet with lights, for all your bits and bobs and a bath mat was even provided so as to prevent slipping in the shower. The beds and pillows were so comfortable and there was a lovely dressing table with a mirror and light which was perfectly placed, with a little drawer to put all your things in. The balcony was lovely with a fab view, 2 chairs and a table and a great retractable drying rail. The room has a little wardrobe, perfectly adequate for 2 people and there were lots of drawers for storage. We had the most wonderful stay. If you're booked to stay here you will not regret it. Enjoy! And thank you to Niki and all the family for looking after us. We'll definitely be back!
The hotel was a bit tired and definitely in need of a refresh. The room ok, bathroom was tiny, room was cleaned once mid way thru week, one change of towels. To be fair we didn't spend a lot of time in the room and we were ok with that, the beds were nice and comfortable and we coped with the lack of plugs, only two in the room and neither near the mirror!
The breakfast was a strange affair, everything bought to you on a tray and just put in front of you, like it or not! Choice of tea or coffee. Choice of (powdered) juice. We had only had breakfast twice, first day and last. Amazing little place down the road did the most amazing Greek breakfast so that was our place to go.
In the room there was a kettle and a fridge, no cups mugs glasses or spoons so go prepared if you want a coffee or drink in your room! Very weird set up with both fridge and kettle out on the small balcony! To use the kettle you had to unplug the fridge! I could go on with all the little anomalies but over the years we've learnt that this is just Greece, it's what it is and to me none of these things meant it was a bad holiday, we loved it. Just one more thing, the hotel is on the beach... the tiniest worst bit of beach in Alykes! Walk up a few minutes and the beach is amazing, all you could wish for.
Our room was small, the bathroon so small that only one person could be in there at one time. The shower flooded the room every time, so beware. There were elements in the room which did not work and the look was of someone who did not care.
The breakfast was ridiculously small and doled out by staff whose whole demenear said they did not want to be there and that you were a nuisance. We were there for two weeks and they still did not know our order. I am told the beans you did get were cold as a huge tin was poured into a micro wave bowl and given a few seconds. The sunbeds were old and broken and even though you were at the hotel you were still charged.
I am sure this was a great lady in its time but now is an old lady who no-one cares for. Such a shame.
"If you are looking for a relaxing break, in an authentic Greek hotel this is definitely the place to go."Read full review
