One of the most beautiful and hospitable places in the world. There are not enough words to describe the feeling that the team transmit around the hotel. Everyone that we engaged with was absolutely lovely! Aika at guest services was wonderful she welcomed us with champagne as it was our anniversary and she was so friendly and informative. The beach bar team were great! The Gulati house team particularly Azlan were great. The breakfast is phenomenal and full of variety. The attention to detail is incredible the team do their best to remember everything that they can about you. An oasis of real calm you have everything you need here so take your time to enjoy it!

We returned from our amazing stay in the Datai last week. The property itself is just beautiful, we stayed in a rainforest villa and it really was exceptional. Beautifully decorated with a really comfortable feel to the villa. The grounds are gorgeous and very well maintained. If you don’t feel like walking the hotel has lots of golf buggies to take you. Rarely has to wait longer then 5 mins once it was called. Food wise, we ate in all of the restaurants. All were of high standard. Deserving a special mention - the journey through the east evening in the dining room was simply mind blowing. Each course was better than the last. Well thought out and very well balanced. Really was the highlight of our stay. The staff in the dining room also deserve a special mention here. Managing to balance professionalism and knowledge with friendliness and fun when interacting with us. In fact all staff deserve a mention here, there is no doubt the Datai is beautiful but what sets it apart is the amazing staff who work here. Extremely enjoyable stay over all flawless.

We have visited and reviewed The Datai many times and the fact that we continue to come back year after year despite the very long journey speaks volumes. The setting is stunning and the staff are excellent, very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were happy to chill out and relax surrounded by nature. We have visited many super properties in other countries and enjoyed them very much but The Datai ticks all the boxes for us and feels like our idea of paradise! Over the years we have stayed in most room categories and they are all great but our favourite is a Rainforest Pool Villa. Relaxing in the pool watching the monkeys, birds and butterflies whilst listening to the sounds of the forest and the stream is just sublime. We visited in April and were prepared for rain as the dry season has ended but we had beautiful sunny weather for the vast majority of our 10 day stay. We had 3 days with rain in the late afternoon/early evening but these passed quickly. At this time of the year a lot of flowers are in bloom and many trees are in fruit thus attracting more wildlife. We thoroughly recommend the Spa and enjoyed massages during one of the rain showers which added to the relaxation! The Datai is the most eco friendly hotel we have ever been to and a visit to ‘The Lab’ is well worthwhile and educational as well as fun! We also ‘learned how to be naturalists’ at the Nature Centre and placed hidden cameras in the forest to help monitor the behaviour of the wildlife. This was a fascinating experience and well worth doing! There are many other things to enjoy but we just stuck to our lovely pool and ventured out mainly to eat. We didn’t even go to the beautiful beach at all! The food was great everywhere we ate and if the hotel is busy the Beach Club is a great, peaceful alternative for breakfast although it is just ‘a la carte’ with no buffet option. As every year some old friends amongst the staff have left and we miss them, but new stars always emerge! Thanks to everyone but we must mention Yoon, Azmir, Edy, Gunawan, Shaiful, Izzie, Amelia, Wendy and the legendary Sivagaran!

The Datai is just incredible! Words just don’t do it justice… but I’ll give it a go. We usually tend to go for cosy 3 or 4 star hotels. However we have also stayed in a fair few 5 star hotels and this was for my 50th Birthday so we thought we’d spoil ourselves. But honestly this is another level to anything we’ve experienced before. Pure luxury right in the heart of the rainforest, totally immersed in nature. But also on a stunning beach. Absolutely the best of all worlds. The Datai is basically faultless. Anyone who says otherwise you can ignore. There’s a reason why Condé Nast Traveler Magazine are fans of this place, they were actually here working on something during our stay. From the moment they hit the gong to announce our arrival the amazing staff looked after us brilliantly. As you sit in the bar overlooking the pool, there’s a sudden realisation you’re somewhere very special indeed. If you love nature, boy you are in for a treat! We’ve done a couple of safaris (so are still relative novices) but some of the sightings here are up there with those we saw in Africa. For a start, hang around on a sunbed in the far corner of the main pool and the dusky leaf monkeys will make an appearance - usually in the afternoon. They don’t seem aggressive at all (as long as you keep your distance) and just wander by on their way to a berry snack in the trees. Slightly curious of you but that’s about it. Other sightings included; a huge Monitor Lizard, a Python asleep in a tree, loads of lizards, Geckos, Hornbills, frogs, scorpions, termites on the march (Crystal Creek), many butterflies and some eagles. We didn’t encounter the local three metre King Cobra at all. Apparently it’s lived on the property for 20 years and not caused anyone any problems, so nothing to worry about there. The staff usually know where it was last seen and advise accordingly. They’ll say something like; it was seen in The Gulai House area so if you’re going there for dinner make sure you take The Buggy and don’t walk. Our room 214 was absolutely lush, had an amazing bathroom, with his and hers sinks, a bath a lovely rainforest shower, dressing gowns, slippers, an area for your cases and a safe. There’s superb air-con and a fan, very much needed in the heat and humidity. The bed was extremely comfy and we both slept very well here. The TV was in a bit of an odd position… but let’s face it, you’re not here to watch TV. There was a lovely big balcony overlooking the rainforest, with a partial view of the pool. It was all so peaceful. There was a bit of a confusion about the mini-bar, mainly because there was no menu in our room. So we didn’t realise until our third night that soft drinks were complimentary and refilled daily. Alcohol and snacks were chargeable. Not a big deal really, just could’ve saved us a bit of money. For any Brits reading this, you don’t need any adapters for charging (as we found in the rest of Malaysia) they use the UK style sockets. There’s a lot of stairs down to the beach but there’s a fleet of golf buggies to ferry people around if you don’t fancy it, especially on the way back up. Usually have to wait a few mins for one but this wasn’t an issue for us. We ate at The Beach Club, The Gulai House and The Pavilion and loved them all. The Gulai House was a wow experience for us and worth every ringgit. The food was gorgeous and the service and staff were fantastic. We felt The Beach Club was a bit overpriced, still very good but there’s no way it should be more expensive than The Gulai House. The Pavilion was an excellent Thai restaurant but didn’t have quite the wow factor of The Gulai… at least for us. We also had food in the main restaurant (the one used for breakfast) one afternoon, which was also good although we were the only ones in there. The thing to bear in mind with The Datai is it’s quite remote so you will be eating at the hotel, because there’s no other restaurants nearby. This won’t be an issue for the majority of guests and isn’t really a problem for a few days. But for longer stays just factor in the cost of eating and drinking here, it definitely isn’t cheap and that’s from someone who lives in London. We always looked forward to breakfast which was also a high end experience. For a start i’ve never had Lobster Benedict or Crab Omellette before but I would certainly have them again! As well as ordering off the menu there’s a rather impressive buffet with everything you could possibly want, including a wide variety western and Asian options. I must admit we really enjoyed their cakes! Although the hotel was almost full when we were there breakfast was the only time it felt busy. We had to wait for a table one occasion, but again no big deal. The other thing we did (just before we left) was book afternoon tea (in the bar) which was also fab, if you enjoy this sort of thing we’d highly recommend doing this. The price was quite reasonable but you will need to be hungry for this, it was an Asian version of afternoon tea but highly enjoyable. We spent most our time around the main pool and at the beach. Water was brought to us within moments every time we turned up. Both were relaxing experiences because neither were that busy, I’m not entirely sure where everyone went after breakfast. Then throughout the day we were offered little free treats, ice cream, sorbet, alcoholic shots and fruit. A lovely touch we thought. The moment they bring the umbrellas out to your sunbed even it’s sunny… they really know things are about to change! Let’s just say they call it the rain forest for a reason! The beach is absolutely stunning, it’s effectively their own private beach since The Datai is the only hotel in the bay and it can only be reached by boat. Lovely place to spend a couple of hours, absolutely idyllic. We did a couple of the walks, the morning one, the evening one and also got taken to Crystal Creek with Dev (you have to pay for this one but it’s really worth it). It was more of a hike than we were expecting though, it was properly in the rain forest a short drive away (still the hotels property though) and it involved scrambling down a river bank and crossing a small river. However it was a superb experience as we were the only ones doing it the day we went so it was like a private tour. We swam in the creek for an hour before Dev told us there was a 4 meter Python in there the day before! Very funny! He was a lovely guy, really interesting, with some real tales to tell. Thanks Dev we really enjoyed Crystal Creek and chatting with you. Equally we enjoyed our walks with Lizzy, she was amazing! Really knowledgeable and enthusiastic and she clearly loves her job. Her enthusiasm was infectious. She also pointed out the Python in the tree in The Datai’s mangroves which one of my favourite wildlife sightings. As for the rest of the staff everyone without exception was absolutely lovely, sadly I didn’t catch everyone’s names but Amelia on reception really helped us out with a request of ours. Thanks Amelia! Very much appreciated. And we had a great chat with the lovely Ain in the main lobby bar, lovely lady, was really good to chat to her also. Anyway, I think I’ve gone on long enough. We travel a lot but The Datai is now our favourite place we’ve ever stayed! It’s just superb on every level! We don’t return to many places (as there’s so many others to see) but we’re already dreaming of coming back here. And we will! Iain, London

We absolutely adored our 2-night stay at The Datai Langkawi to celebrate our belated wedding anniversary. Despite the post-Covid period, the hotel's atmosphere was delightful and our every need was attended to by the attentive staff. The food was delicious, the facilities were impeccable, and the room was incredibly comfortable. We enjoyed the sea activities and the hotel's beautiful surroundings, taking tons of pictures. We fell in love with the hotel and are already planning our next visit!

Not quite sure where to start… The Datai is a very special magical place!! This is my 4th visit to the Datai, and most certainly won’t be my last! Every aspect of the hotel is just totally outstanding. We opted for a Rain Forest Villa again this time, which are simply superb, lovely big rooms, huge bathrooms/ dressing room, comfortable beds, and everything you could possibly ask for! The restaurants food and service are on another level, I have to be honest and say we have never had a bad experience in any of the restaurants on any of our stays. Breakfast is also simply amazing with so much choice… fresh breads, pastries, smoothies, everything you could possibly imagine. The beach is probably one of the best we have ever been too, so clean, ample sun-beds, fabulous beach bar where you want for nothing! The service on the beach and at the beach bar is outstanding. A very special “Thank you “ to Daba who looked after us handsomely, as did all the staff…. The nature centre is a highlight of the Datai, with the canopy walks, mangroves, wildlife, Monkeys, Otters, Cobra’s Hornbills, Frog pond, to name but a few ! My highlight was the Spa, definitely 100% the best experiences ever in the most beautiful surroundings. Thank you also to Wenzell for always stopping by to say hello and check in, a special thank you to housekeeping and the wonderful turndown service, the best laundry service ever ! The lovely Buggy drivers who were just amazing, and everyone one else…. I travel extensively with my work, but this is quite simply my most favourite hotel that I have been too. Arnaud, thank you and all of your team for such an amazing stay.

We returned to the Datai having first stayed the previous April. This is one of the friendliest, most beautiful, responsible hotels we have ever stayed at. It is obvious that staff enjoy working there, and obvious they are looked after by management. Management treat them well, and they work well in response. Exceptional. The location is second to none, the meals, the rooms, the facilities excellent. The transfers from and to the airport, efficient, reliable, friendly and comfortable. We had a canopy room, but on request were shown the rainforest villas, and suites and we know next time that is where will will book. Our son and his partner live in KL, so we visit regularly, and each time we visit, we will be back at the Datai. There honestly is nowhere like it!

One of the best beaches and hotels in the world for families and couples that like nature, good smiling customer service and beautiful clean beach. I don’t think there is any hotel in the world where you get top class food, a kids friendly bay and a real rainforest with amazing wildlife. My kids who came here when they were 5 and 3 are already asking when they can return. We stayed in a beach villa (number 8) which was stunning and so amazing with a really charming and friendly butler (Debra). Last time we stayed in a regular villa and I would suggest if you can definitely do a beach Villa. It’s worth the $$. The food at Gulai house and breakfast at Beach club was fabulous. The kayaks with kids to the adjoining island was a highlight and so was the mysterious mangrove tour. So much to mention but everyday was special. We will be back in the next 3 years for sure. A special thank you for allowing us to easily cancel two beach villas as it was meant to be my mothers 70th birthday but her sister passed away suddenly and the resort didn’t make us feel guilty about cancelling the other two villas last minute.

Fourteen years have passed since we last visited, this time with our two kids in tow. All that makes this place so magical and addictive remains in place, with subtle and sensitive upgrades having taken place since our last visit. Our children loved the activities laid on for them. Learning about the rainforest, it’s wildlife, sustainability, recycling; they really enjoyed it all and kept asking to do more. The food is of a very high standard, and their wine list exceptional. This trip was delayed by three years because of Covid and sadly my parents did not come along as originally intended, but other than this disappointment, it was an all but perfect trip. We will definitely return. My children were both genuinely sad having left and I think that says it all!
