Booked a room via facebook & from lonely planet saw it was south of the island. I walked 20 mins south to be told it's on a different road..back I go and not an easy walk in the mud...another 20 mins...signs or directions would have been useful. Arrived there to blaring music & 4 young Laos guys drinking at laughing... More

Its the place I was looking for so long while travelling. Travelling can be exhausting after a while, and The Last Resort is just the perfect place to take a break, a long break, or even a longer break. There is nothing else like that on the Island and havent seen anything like this anywhere else I have been. The... More

We stayed here for 2 weeks and loved it. The teepees are a great size and really clean. There is a communal area where they have film nights and you can chill out in the day. The price was really good and they even had adorable puppies. It is a 20 minute walk to the main part of the island... More

Different! Different to everything else around. And thats what makes this place so perfect. Never expected to sleep in a teepee, loved it! First place I actually could calm down of travelling, relax and recharge one´s batteries. Its a very social place but not too busy, as there are "only" 4 teepees, which is just the right amount in my... More

It was a gruelling 20min walk from the docks to the Last Resort in the midday sun (just keeping following the signs towards the sunset side of the island) but the rustic tepees and cosy atmosphere are definitely worth it. The tepees are really cool with a raised smallish double bed area with mosquito net and fan. The communal balcony... More

The Last Resort is nice and basic, however we had read reviews that there was an outdoor cinema and communal meals but these didn't happen when we stayed and had to walk into town for breakfast. We did however have a nice fire. There is also only one bathroom which may not be for everyone and the sink wasn't working,... More

When I was relaxing down at the 4000 islands in southern Laos I can only describe this place as paradise. Hanging out on hammocks looking at the sun set every night while eating great organic home made food while sleeping in teepees. Durning the day We went kayaking on the mekong while looking at Irrawaddy river Dolphins and checked out... More

Jon is the friendliest host that we have come across on our travels so far and is an excellent cook! It is a 15 minute walk from the main street but it is worth it to stay here - recommend booking ahead because it was full when we stayed (even in the wet season). Thanks Jon!

I arrived on Don Det with the intention to stay for one week. Four weeks later I was saying a tearful goodbye to The Last Resort, having extended my Laos visa to stay longer. I absolutely fell in love with this little paradise, from the hand built teepees to the open air movie nights to the incredible atmosphere of the... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Last Resort is a travelling community located on the Sunset Side of Don Det, in the majestic Sipandon region of Laos. Nestled astride the Mekong river, The Last Resort is made up of a handful of beautiful teepees, constructed using only locally sourced materials, in keeping with the age old tradition of the island. More than just a guest house, The Last Resort attracts like minded individuals who are seeking a more natural and communal alternative to the other accommodation available on the island. Having built meaningful relationships with local fishermen, craftsmen and community leaders, the Last Resort's owner Jon Watkinson has been able to utilise local knowledge to create a unique environment, unlike any other on the island. The teepees are positioned serenely between working, traditional Laos gardens where herbs, fruits and vegetables are grown and used to prepare daily food, a nightly fire with surrounding benches for relaxing in the evening and a clay oven used to make fresh bread and sweet treats! In addition to regular cinema nights on our big screen and the cafe/e-library (open 11am - 5pm) serving locally sourced, Bolaven Plateau coffee with a comprehensive selection of eBooks available for transfer, The Last Resort offers a range of entertainment including a table tennis table, selection of board games (Don Det Monopoly, Scrabble, Articulate, Pictionary), organized sunset/fishing trips and cooking courses with local Laos families. Pilates and Yoga have both been practised previously in the large communal area however this depends on availability of instructors.Breakfast is available at The Last Resort between 8-10 am and a communal evening meal using home grown vegetables and herbs is offered to all guests on a daily basis. This must however, be booked before 3pm to ensure enough food is prepared. Soft drinks, BeerLao and shakes are also available up until curfew at 11pm at which time all businesses in Don Det are obliged to close for the day. ... more   less
