On our drive from Provence, France to Piedmont, Italy, we selected a random (but logistically sound) location along our route to break up the long drive. We then selected a small property without giving it a great deal of thought because we would only be there a couple days. Boy, did we get lucky. It is true that La Maison du Guil is a little difficult to find, requiring navigating along some very narrow roads near the property itself. Venture on, and once you arrive, be prepared to step into a meticulously maintained and wonderfully designed boutique bed and breakfast. The cool and clean air, and quiet surroundings, remind you that you are definitely away from the daily grind. Add to that the great personalities of Wim and Tom, and you will be in for a wonderful stay. Dinner is served most evenings on the property. This is a godsend as you wouldn’t want to navigate the narrow roads at night. Besides, Wim and Tom are excellent and creative hosts who prepare amazing meals. Combine that with a wine list which would be the envy of more than a few restaurants, and you can look forward to a great stay. Breakfast is delicious, coffee is served in a thermos to keep it hot, and it is often served outside. The rooms are spacious and very clean, and the decor fits with the surrounding mountains. La Maison du Guil is Wim and Tom’s home, and they share it willingly with their guests. We truly enjoyed our conversations with them, and our stay at La Maison du Guil was one of the highlights of our trip. We sincerely hope that our travels bring us back through this beautiful corner of France.

We stayed in the very spacious Marjolaine room with the balcony onto the mountain view. There was a big bathroom with double handbasins. Note of caution; there is a high step in the room to the bathroom and onto the balcony. The Maison du Guil has been beautifully restored with quirky, functional and tasteful modern design. The old stone keeps the rooms cool in high summer. The hosts Tom and Wim have put their hearts and souls into doing a fantastic job. They provide a clean environment with wonderful food and are exceptionally attentive hosts tailoring holidays to individuals' needs with a wealth of local information. Their recommendations for local restaurants was spot on.

We found this place via the Guardian review and decided to make it our destination stop off on our road trip through France. It is remote, it is a little quirky and the building is authentic. If you are prepared to embrace all of these elements you will be blown away by the warm welcome and tranquility. Wim and Tom put their heart and soul into the experience and if you can I would whole heartedly recommend the dining experience. They are both superb chefs and we had an outstanding meal, accompanied by great wine and really enjoyable company, which is not forced upon you. Thank you both for a memorable stay, best wishes Sara and Shaun

We are already looking forward to returning to Tom and Wim’s place. We wanted to find somewhere unique from which to enjoy the beauty of the Alps and La Maison du Guil was a happy discovery. For us, driving along the narrow, windy roads that brought us to the hamlet in Eygliers was half the fun. Tom and Wim greeted us with big smiles and treated us so well during our whole time with them. Every little detail was thoughtfully considered and they meant it when they asked us to just shout if we needed anything. They helped us find a nice hike and scenic drive to do on our one short day in th Alps. We had a great day and can only imagine how much fun we could have with a whole week to explore the many hikes in the area. We love to be out in nature and this place calls to those who appreciate the outdoors. We stayed in the room that we called our “cozy cave”. It was wonderful. We had been warned about the short ceiling. However, neither of us found this to be an issue (and we are 178 cm and 190 cm tall). We liked the feeling of being tucked away somewhere special. The shower was fantastic! And the stone stairs leading up to the lair are a reminder of the history of the building, which was originally constructed by monks. So fascinating to us Canadians who have nothing like this back home. We are so glad we took Wim and Tom up on their offer to make us dinner. It turned out to be our best meal yet in France. They put their heart into their BnB and it really shows. If you are lucky enough to get to stay at La Maison du Guil, you will find the warm hospitality a delight. We left feeling completely satisfied and like we had made new friends. We would not hesitate to stay at La Maison du Guil again, and again, and again. Thank you Wim and Tom!!! Many thanks, Eric & Donna from Vancouver

My partner and I stayed at this B&B for quite a while - 6 nights - and we enjoyed every minute of it. We were looking for a B&B location that ensured pure tranquillity to escape from our city lives, but also with lots of hiking opportunities - and that is exactly what we got. It could however could be too isolated for some; the B&B itself is very remote and can be tricky to find by car if you are not a confident driver (lots of narrow roads!) and generally you will need to drive to a nearby town to access supermarkets, restaurants etc. There are a couple of restaurants though in walking distance (e.g. Le Galet), and the hosts themselves cook very well (if not better than the local restaurants!). The Tom & Wim were also very knowledgeable about the local area, which was particularly useful when it came to getting the best hiking routes etc. I do however feel that those not interesting in hiking or exploring the area might find the location too remote, but for us, it was a perfect getaway!
