The (young) staff is one of the other reasons to stay longer than planned; sweet people who'll do anything to make you feel at home. This is Myanmar in a nutshell.
Locally there's lots of stuff to do: amazing markets that rotate around the lake, pagodas and temples and of course the famed fishermen, who still fish in the way of their forefathers. Staff can help you with getting there and away. They also have a nice pool for those other days, when cocktails seem like a better idea ;)
One thing: it's a busy lake sometimes, and the boats have outboard diesel motors. I gotta say that we didn't mind; we are guests in an area where real people live real lives. It's not my place to be annoyed. But if you're prone to this kind of disturbance you could ask when the market is close to the resort (every 8 days or so), and decide to go before or after that date. They also have earplugs or cabins more in the back if you ask. Anyway, we basically just registered the sound and went on with our lives. It's up to you. One day, I'm sure, electric motors will take over the diesel slurpers, also for environmental reasons.
Enjoy!
The good: The hotel is a 20 minute boat ride from the airport and you get to see lovely scenery and great photographs to be taken on the ride. The beds are cozy, clean with gauzy mosquito nets around them. Each room has a subtle theme based on the Buddhist Zodiac. I was in the owl room (door knocker was an owl, the mirror had a small wooden owl carved into it, etc.). Very tasteful.
We were just a short ride away from markets and villages to visit with our tour group. Anne, the owner, was more than accommodating to help us find the best places to go and get us reliable boat drivers.
Huge bathrooms with a great outdoor shower and an indoor bathtub with a private toilet. Lots of closet space and luggage areas. The porch has two chairs and table which are very comfortable to watch the sunset over the mountains. You fall asleep to the lapping of the water and awake the fisherman's boats leaving for their morning catch.
The bad: The internet was slow but it did work in the business center. There are only 2 computers. I honestly didn't use it for the 4 days we were there though because I was really glad to escape it. The food service was slow but when it arrived it was great! The alcohol is expensive.
The ugly: none.
The hotel itself is simple and basic - like the Burmese people - those looking for western 5-star really should not be travelling.....travel is about cultures, people and integrating and learning....if you're looking for a hamburger, just don't leave home and ruin it for the rest of us!
The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable and the food was great!
We met and got along so well with the owner that she took us to her ancestoral home, toured us around personally and we managed to experience the generoristy and warmth of the local people. It was intriguing to see what Burma was like in its glory days....and still is through the hearts of her people!
If you want a piece of zen heaven - this is certainly the place for you.....no phones, no TV, minimal distraction by our electronic age, but an experience and peace that cannot be found in an international setting!
"Nice room, large and comfortable. Remember to use the air conditioning to get warm, the nights are cool."Read full review
"The inn is secluded and generally very quiet, except when longtail boats are going by, it can be very loud."Read full review
