If you answer the title question with "yes", then look no further. This is the perfect hotel for you. When you are an independantly travelling Westerner, you would be well advised to keep on searching for something else. The first choise for visiting Inle Lake is fundamental: do I stay in a resort at the lake shore, or do I stay in the village of Nyaungshwe which is connected to the lake by a long canal? When you decide to pay more and stay at the lake shore , you expect certain advantages: direct boat access to the lake, views, luxurious room, sunbathing opportunities, swimming pool. In Hupin Hotel you will have the view, but not the rest. 1) you'll have to take a watertaxi over the lake to the village in order to arrange for (day)trip(s) on that same lake, you can't organize anything at hotel reception . 2) the standard rooms are ok but all wood - old fashioned. There's coffee and tea available in the room, but no water boiler like you will find in any modern hotel, the personnel walks up and down still with thermosbottles. 3) The hotel is surrounded by meticulously maintained chineese gardens, great, ...... but there's no lawn with deckchairs or other means for outdoors leasure, only a very uncomfortable wooden bench on the common porch. Space enough, but no swimming pool. 4) One of the many reception ladies speaks understandable English, with all other ladies communication is rudimentary at best. 5) There's wifi only in the reception area. And even then: the receptionist had to switch on the router first, can you believe it? So: this hotel is built for guests that need nothing else but sleeping and eating, with all the rest beiing pre-arranged by the travel agent.. They mean well , but this hotel is frozen in time and has not adapted to modern needs of modern travellers.

We had a room right on the lake with a fantastic view. The room (mini apartment) was spacious and modern. Lovely gardens and beautiful lobby. Service OK. Breakfast needs to be slightly improved for Europeans.

Management needs some serious hospitality training. Priror to arriving I sent countless emails with no reply. I also phoned five times but no one picked up. The reason why became apparent upon arrival as the reception desk is barley manned (despite a 24/7 open reception policy), as the staff gathers in a room next to the reception to socialize. Though the ground staff was lovely, the manager needs some serious training. Our air-con was not working properly and his answer was to “open the windows”. In 35 degrees heat. We were sweating like crazy. I had to argue about possibly changing rooms (it was hot season so a lot of rooms were vacant!), and in the end he said we could see in the evening. No empathy, understanding or willingness to deliver good customer service - so frustrating! Especially considering is a very expensive, luxury, hotel. The biggest turn-off came at the end however. Due to poor curtains which were thin, white and did not cover the windows we had to use sleeping masks. Due to some chemical they use in their washing my special sleeping mask left a vague mark on the pillowcase which can be washed. At checkout they added $10 to the bill for “pillowcase”. When I enquired the manager said they needed to wash it so I would be charged! This is a luxury hotel that we paid hundreds of dollars for, and they charge me for cleaning a pillow sheet!? Save your money and go elsewhere. I would recommend Inle Heritage Hotel, or Inle Princess Resort, instead. Heard great things and enjoyed their restaurants.

This was a relaxing place to stay while exploring Inle Lake and Nyaungshwe. The hotel is removed from town, so you'll have to rent bikes from the hotel up the road to get there or hire a water taxi from the hotel. We felt breakfast was good and really enjoyed the mornings noodles were also an option. Staff is helpful and the grounds are beautiful
