Easy access from Caen and a short distance from Bayeaux and the Normandy D-Day landing beaches. La Ducrie is a small chateau where the dauphin Louis XI was born. We slept in the same room as the dauphin which was also used as a Nazi headquarters with bullet holes in the doors and some very interesting stories by the very hospitable owners. Near St Lo and beautiful flower markets and nice restaurants. A very pleasurable experience.
Get historical home, good location for many of Normandy's sites but it is made special by Joe and Vivienne. I have stayed on three occasions once for almost two weeks because I liked it so much. Joe also gives wonderful historic Normandy beach tours - very informative.
La Ducrie is a simply magical place! The castle is full of history and unique nooks and crannies, and the property is beautiful. But what makes it so special are the owners, Joe and Vivienne (and of course, their dogs, Lottie and Ghost!). They welcome you into their home with a warmth and graciousness that was highly unexpected at a B&B, and made for a very enjoyable stay. Joe's knowledge of the history and stories of D-Day and the surrounding area is quite impressive, and he tells his stories with an entertaining Scottish wit sure to make you smile. Vivienne is simply lovely, and her cooking is outstanding. My husband and I and our two teenage children enjoyed two dinners with them that were just fantastic and accompanied by great conversation. I don't think we have ever eaten so much delicious food in one sitting! I would be remiss not to mention Pavel, their on-site staffer who is sweet and very helpful. You will not be disappointed if you stay at La Ducrie - we were sad to leave our new friends. We only hope the wind will take us to Normandy again!…
Stayed her now several times and enjoyed the unique and special hospitaility. Beautiful, property and fantastic food and owners. Great for larger groups of say 20/25 people and plenty of garden space in the right weather
Highly recommend. Interesting and unique stay. We over-nighted here on our way from the Normandy beaches to Mont St Michel. Castle and and accommodations are just as pictured. Rooms are clean and large, and the beds are great. It is a castle so the rooms are oddly arranged and you have to watch your head. The hosts are very friendly and helpful.
