I lived close to this village, as I grew through my teens I recall there was four pubs, each as an extension of somebody's private residence supplying beer and conversation to local farm workers. There was a local "bobby" called Phil Royne who would see you home when in difficulty. Many years passed, the village now caters for business in... More

Spent the night here recently. Bathrooms recently upgraded with underfloor heating. Rooms will be done next - which ours was ready for but it was adequate. Breakfast well cooked. Staff friendly and helpful.

Stayed here on business. Rooms are a nice size, with a modern enquire bathroom. Staff were all Helpful and friendly. Had dinner in the bar. Good choice of real ales. Food was very tasty and very reasonably priced. The cooked breakfast was good.

Went for a tea time special, and yes you get what you pay for, however I have been many times in the past and it was pretty decent for the money. Went last night and ordered chicken in Diane sauce.. chicken was totally over cooked, not enough sauce and they provided 1 bowl of overcooked chips between 4 people. We... More

We went to The Wainstones as a precursor to booking Christmas Lunch - probably as well that we did as new have now found another venue for Christmas lunch. The food was adequate, the service was adequate and the surrounding good. Maybe we should have realised that this is not one of the favourite places on Teesside when there were... More

Overnight for a meeting and needed to eat quickly before appointment. Ribeye served rare was first class. Staff were great at both reception, bar and chef. Can't fault it, maybe bar area a bit "tired"? House Red great, defo come again. Recommended.

A good choice to stay if you're walking the Coast to Coast path. It's 2 miles north of the route but if you call from the top of the last hill they will be waiting with a car at the bottom. Nice old hotel that's seen better days. Room is comfortable but not large by American standards but my guess... More

We stayed here during our C2C walk and the staff could not have been more helpful, from the manager picking us up at Clay Bank Top, right through the reception and waiting-on staff. The room was what I would call a typical corporate hotel room, large bathroom (with bath!) but was far too warm. The building feels a little dated... More

After reading some of the previous reviews we were a bit apprehensive about the hotel and had in fact booked dinner at another pub in the village. However, on arrival we were generally pleasantly surprised, though we felt the receptionist wasn't perhaps having the best of days from her demeanour! Aand although our room was a bit tired it was...
