Scuba Junkie runs a great dive resort. We’ve also stayed at Scuba Junkie Komodo, and with both resorts, safety is of primary importance. While the resort is not luxurious, it’s quite comfortable, with overwater rooms with great views and fish and turtles swimming underneath. The house reef is wonderful-ask to go see the GIANT clam! The island is small but an authentic local experience. The staff and dive masters are excellent and the underwater world you will get to experience is second to none. Snorkeling with whale sharks, mantas, sea turtles, octopus, and SOOO many fish is incredible. Plus, you get to visit one of the few jellyfish lakes in the world. A few caveats: not the easiest place to get to, there’s two options, but neither is terribly convenient. I did the 4 hour boat ride from Tarakan, and the water was very rough (some days it’s calm). Another consideration is money-no international ATM on the island, so bring lots of Rupiah. I was coming from another country, so was limited on how much I could get at the airport and ran out of cash. Stock up on $ prior to the island. Lastly, while the dive team was fabulous, I felt that the snorkelers were not a priority. Granted, diving is a very technical undertaking, but it always seemed like the daily trips revolved around diving first. That being said, I LOVED my adventure with Scuba Junkie Sangalaki and plan to go back soon-Indonesia has been my favorite place in the world to snorkel and Scuba Junkie is the best!

Clearly the managers/owners know what they’re doing. All our questions were answered ahead of time, and honest guidance was given. Transfers arranged were super punctual and professional, too! This dive resort is not fancy, but it’s all you can ask for if you’ll be focused on diving. Local staff are very well trained and treat guests with the right combination of respect and humour. The guiding was well executed and boat staff were extremely helpful. I felt very well taken care of. Accommodation is reasonably priced, comfortable, and clean - rooms are all ocean view (although someone has built a resort next door). This is a local resort island, so don’t expect it to be super quiet in the evenings - surround sound karaoke on weekends... The diving is really top notch. Healthy, vibrant reefs overrun with turtles, corals, and critters. A huge variety of stuff; mantas, sharks, tiny shrimp, nudis, schools of barracuda, and big pelagics. Dives are advanced; “What, you’ve never used a reef hook?” Visibility in the rainy season is ok - still impressive sites. Come see all this stuff before the place gets busy and ruined. Whale shark snorkelling tours are seasonal and really awesome. If you want an off-the beaten track dive experience with stunning sites and alllllll the cool marine life, this is your place.

Second time staying at Scuba Junkie Sangalaki and again it was wonderful even in December just as rainy season had started. First time was a year ago and already then we had made new dive buddies and said it would be great to be back and we did with another dive buddy as well. It was great meeting up with Moa, Emelie and Igo again as well as making new friendships in Max and Solomon and the others who stayed at the same time. We love the cozy bungalows and the common room where we had breakfast and met up for dive log writing, a beer and nice wrap up of the days. The view from the common area makes for great sunset pictures! We always feel safe when diving with Scuba Junkie and the dive guides and crews are top notch! We dove at Sangalaki, Kakaban, Maratua and Derawan. Sangalaki is Manta heaven no matter if you are the surface or in the water. Kakaban is a bit deeper so here we saw more sharks and bigger fish. At Kakaban we also got to visit the jelly fish lake that is an experience in itself as you snorkel with stingless jelly fish. Maratua is the largest of the islands and here you have a lot of turtles. Derawan is the local sites around and teaming with macro and the two really big Morays - one is called Rambo and we are sure we saw his brother as well. This year we dove with Solomon and what he cannot find in the water - we don't know what that would be! He spoted the tiniest nudies, pygme seahorses and much much more and made a truly wonderful and knowledgeable guide! The crew and everybody are so helpful and service minded and really did the best to make our stay. A change from last years stay is that if you want to you can go to dinner with everyone else at a local warung. Last year we went on our own. We really loved this change, as it became easier to get to now each other and have great discussions. I would think that this is a very good thing especially for those traveling alone as there are not many other international tourists on the island. The food varied each nite and was very good with a variety to choose from vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

We stayed in July 2019, but i only noticed now i never left a review. ScubaJunkie Sangalaki is a place that i can not recommend enough for people that love diving. The diving operation is relatively small but run very professionally in a total laid back atmosphere. The dive guides know the dive sites very well the boats have professional captains and safety comes always first. In the morning, breakfast is served upstairs at the dive center and after the dives, before dinner, there is room to chill, do the logbooks and have a drink. The huts that are built over water cater for everything that you need. A good bed, a terrace and a good shower. And then there is the diving itself.....i can only say, go see for yourself, amazing unspoilt dive sites Thank you for the remarkable stay and dives, we loved every minute of it !!

This place is amazing! Great cozy water bungalows, friendly and professional staff and amazingly pristine diving conditions. December is supposed to have “not-so-great” conditions but all our dives are either good, great or AWESOME. We are always the ONLY group diving in all the islands that we go to. We have never seen any other divers except those from our boat. Thanks Igo for taking us to cool sites and spotting all the awesome sea creatures for us, and Moa for drawing my 100th dive card for me and sending us off with loads of good luck…Your good luck wishes did come true and we had the best dives we ever that day….Thresher, hammerhead, schooling blue grey reef sharks, white tips, eagle ray, hundreds of barracuda, manta ray, turtles and dolphins….all on the same day. Unbelievable!! Our group unanimously agree that we all have to come back! We had so much fun. There’s everything for everyone, from macro to huge pelagics. Part of us wanted to tell everyone we know what a great place this is and another part of us want to keep this place a secret to preserve its unspoiled diving conditions.
