#4 of 10 Specialty lodging in Playa Avellanas
Casa Surf is a laid-back hostel/ surf camp perfect for travelers on a budget looking for a clean, safe place to sleep, surf and make new friends. Surf lessons can also be provided by our patient and experienced instructor. Casa Surf is located across the street from Cabinas la Olas, only a 6 minute scenic boardwalk stroll from the untouched beach of Avellanas. We are a far cry from the tourist mecca of Tamarindo, and we love it that way. We believe in providing a pure travelling experience for those who appreciate it most, and our accommodations reflect that. If you are looking for air conditioning, hot showers and isolation from other guests this is probably not the place for you. If you want to surf world-class waves, meet amazing friends for life and experience the true Pura Vida style of Costa Rica, you'll find all that and more at Casa Surf.

My stay at Casa Surf was one I will never forget. The hostel was going through some upgrades and I must say I was impressed. Dan has been putting his life into this place and it shows! Super chill spot to hangout in a hammock. Wifi. Functional and spacious kitchen with everything you need and more; I utalized the vitamix a lot making smoothies with fresh fruits. The space has some newly renovated private rooms and also a dorm room, all have the option of AC. The beach of Avellana is like no other. The walk is maybe 3-5 minutes and even that will take your breath away. The bridge through the mangrove is so cool. The shore line is very large and no one trying to sell you anything other than cold coconuts. The waves are what seem to be endless. The website rings true to the extent of wave exposure here. If you like the ocean to any degree whether it is swimming, admiring from the sand, or surfing you're going to fall in love with this place. I'll add that the sunsets are the most beautiful you'll ever see... The surrounding area of Casa Surf is very quite in regards to "night life". No clubs but some cool restaurants/bars. Really good foods and lots of options with live music. Perfect place to get away and enjoy a small town in Costa Rica. Let's not forget the howler monkeys hanging around! Dan was able to give me some surfing lessons while I was staying in his hostel and I give him ☆☆☆☆☆. Really good teacher and fun to be in the ocean with. He made me feel comfortable and confident while learning and I was able to catch some waves thanks to him! Boards are also available to rent. The road to get to Casa Surf is kind of rough like many in Costa Rica but taxi or uber from Tamarindo will take you there. Depending on your stay I would recommend renting a vehicle so you can do more exploring but it is not necessary. If you have any skills or would like to discuss volunteer options for stay I recommend sending an email to see if there is any space available for that. I met some interesting people, had so much fun, and just enough relaxation. Thank you for having me! I will be back.

Casa surf has been my favorite place to stay for the last 5 years in Avellanas. Ive stayed at Casa surf everytime i came to Costa Rica. Dan is a great host. Super informative of the country and the area. So if your looking to move around or just hang in town he has it dialed in. Safe, clean place to stay with a great vibe. Whether your looking to rent a board, getting a surf lesson, or you are an experiance surfer who wants to shred all the waves in the area or your board gets dinged and you need a repair, Casa surf is the spot!

Wonderful spot, great owner, excellent location, great waves, lots of boards to select. Dan is an awesome dude, he is extremely hospitable and made my stay extremely comfortable and safe. Website hasn't been updated. It's much better in person.

Serious safety incident
Us two girls stayed here for 3 nights on a surf trip. We both felt some weird vibes from the owner Dan but didn't want to be judgemental so we ignored those initial feelings. However, on our last night at the hostel, we all went and got some drinks at the local bar. Dan(hostel owner) undid my bathing suit, and when I asked him to stop he kept trying to untie it again. I got up and left with my friend and some of the other people who were staying at the hostel and we went to the beach. Dan followed us. We saw all the beautiful bioluminescence in the ocean, so my friend and I jumped in for a swim. My friend went back to the shore, and I was about to go back in when Dan grabbed me from behind and held me next to him while saying dirty things. I kept saying no and struggled to get away from him and then he pushed me underwater and got on top of me. After struggling and pushing him away and basically fighting him, I got away. It was extra scary because the hostel is in the middle of nowhere so I had nowhere to go for help. But we just left and didn't know who to call. Dan is a pervert. If you are a girl, don't stay here.

So the hostel is very rustic, limit of dirty. There is no cleaning, no toilet paper, bed sheet are disgusting. We spent 2 nights with my girl friend. But the worst things is the owner Dan ! Two weeks after our visit in his hostel, he sent a message to my girl friend (who stay in Tamarindo for her studies) He asked her If she wants to come again And try his bed with him... He saw us like a couple. I shared twice my food with him, I proposed my help for a construction in the hostel. And in my back he tried to catch my girl friend. That’s not friendly, no respectful and not professional when you are the owner of the place. If you want an advice stay away from this dirty place and far far away from Dan the pervers. Girls don’t go alone over there !
