We have stayed at many 4 and 5 star hotels on our travels but this beautiful friendly Hotel is up there. One feels like you are in a home. A little out of Gavle but worth the effort. A real feel for Sweden. Only stayed for two night but wish it was longer. Everything you need.

I really don't know how to tell this story, that ended in me (age 35) and my partner (age 45) being kicked out after a modest complaint about waking up to loud noices 7 o'clock on a Sunday morning. First of all I'm not sure it's fair to call this establishment a hotel, maybe it's more a hostel, and maybe that's how the owners regard it too.We were let on to believe it was a tree star hotel by a booking site anyhow. The price was 1090 kronor, equivalent to a good deal at a four star hotel in Stockholm or any other large city, but quite pricey for being outside a small town in the countryside. If your going to activities at Högbobruk, the location is good, otherwise I guess it's a bit off in the countryside. Upon arrival there was no one in the reception, we had to call a mobile number, the owner (must have been, it's owned by a farming family) showed up after a few minutes and checked us in. We thought his approach was somewhat strange (just a feeling) but the room he put us in was modern, large, comfortable - in short - nice. We were asked when we wanted breakfast and we asked when it was served, got the answer 8 am. Negociations started since we were in the neighborhood for a party. We kindly asked to have it later, and was offered 9.30. He finally agreed on 10 and we were happy. At the time we were informed the hotel was full. Went to the party and got home at 1.30 at night, snuck in quitely and fell asleep in very nice beds. 7 o'clock in the morning we woke up by heavy rythmical thumps that shook the room and by loud shouts. After 30 minutes my partner had had enough and got up to look what was going on. It turned out to be about ten persons having a gym class, jumping and shouting, making the buildning shake. At ten we went for breakfast, met the owner and told him that we had som complaints about the early morning noice and hence wake up. This was not recieved in a good way, and now afterwards I still can't understand what went wrong so quickly. The man got very angry, said that you have to count on noices in a hotel. Well yes, but maybe not 7 am on a Sunday morning, we argued - but was instantly told that the man himself had stayed in many hotels and knew that you couldn't expect quiet mornings. We asked him if he was aware of exactly how much noice there was in the room when a gym class was going on upstairs. His answer: How should I know, I'm not satying here. We asked if he was aware of that the other guests were practicing gymnastics and the answer was: How can I know what they are doing, they have rented the rooms just like you. Then the owner said that if it didn't suit us we should immediately grab our things and leave. "Get out of here" was the words. I protested and said that I thought the situation had gotten out of hand, that we just wanted to express that we were woken by loud noices, but that that was not a reason to kick us out. "What do you want then!?" was the reaction to that. "Well usually an apology and maybe a discount is what you expect, but not getting kicked out before breakfast", I said. We were then offered to pay half of the price and to stay for breakfast. At this point we were too upset to stay anyway, so we left 15 minutes later, after paying 15 percent of the price (the hotels commission for the booking agency). This is by far the worst and most confusing hotel stay. The owners was very unpleasant, threatening, and I still feel uncomfortable thinking about the situation. I've tried to think what went wrong, but we were not acting rude or bad. Maybe we were expection the quality of a three star hotel not knowing it was a hostel, but I still don't think it's an appropriate way of dealing with clients. I stongly recommend the nearby Högbo brukshotell, which is a little more expensive but truly a four star hotel. I've stayed there before and after being kicked out of Skommarsgården, the staff at Högbo brukshotell offered us breakfast for half the price to make us feel better.

Response from Lenke6, Owner at Hogbo Pensionat Skommarsgarden
Responded Oct 17, 2012
