It’s true that the Sunset Beach Motel has no beach. Nowadays. It used to have. But is has so much else: Excellent location on the water front in a coconut plantation with beautiful views of Bora Bora, spacious bungalows that can easily accomodate 5 people, hospitality, tranquility, free fruit all day long, great continental breakfast served on your porch, good snorkeling, free kayaks and of course - beautiful sunsets! It’s a no brainer. It’s a bargain on Ra’iātea - only 5 minutes from the airport.
Highly recommend Sunset Beach Motel. Beautiful view, great swimming off the pier. They provide snorkel gear and reef shoes. Very helpful staff. Will make reservations for activities.. Transfer to Airport and store. Coconut Plantations is beautiful
We stayed at the sunset beach motel (Raitea) for 6 days and 5 nights. We brought our own tent and used the facility building. It is a very clean and tidy place, the coconut trees and the loan are very good maintained. We used the free kayaks twice during our stay. The private jetty is perfect for sunsets, swimming, snorkeling and watching the octopus, that lives there! There is also snorkeling gear available (included). We felt very welcome. We were helped when ever we needed to (get a lift to supermarket/ airport, renting scooter, exploring the island). We will definitely come back! Thank you, Sunset Beach Motel!!
We have stayed at the Sunset Beach Motel a half dozen times since 2005. We stayed three weeks in 2017 and three weeks in 2018. One can reasonably conclude we like it. It's a big part of the reason Raiatea is one of our favorite islands, and Raiatea is a big part of why we love the Sunset Beach. We started coming to Raiatea in 1995. We are fond of bare-boat yacht chartering, and Raiatea is the bare-boat yacht charter capital of the South Pacific. Tahiti (and that means Raiatea) is probably the best bare-boat charter destination in the world because of its unique combination of calm while breezy lagoon sailing (and anchoring!) with manageable daylong outside passages to Bora Bora and Huahine. Yacht charterers tend to mix dining ashore with dining aboard, so they need to provision, so there are three sizable supermarkets in Uturoa, the principal city on Raiatea. Think lots of fantastic pates and cheeses, along with great produce at the market. Baguettes are 60 cents, delivered fresh to reception each morning. As an aside, they are also delivered all around the island left in yard long baguette boxes next to the mailboxes. That brings us back to the Sunset Beach Motel. As other reviewers have noted, the property is a working coconut grove, with bungalows strewn along the lagoon front under the shade of the coconut trees. The units are large enough for five guests, making them huge for the two of us. The fridge makes great ice for that sunset maitai overlooking Bora Bora. And as you gaze at Bora Bora, you think about the honeymooners staying there for, oh, ten times what you are paying. Plus they are captive to the property's onsite restaurant, with its nosebleed pricing. There's no restaurant at the Sunset Beach Motel, but there are several small restaurants nearby. But get this - some of them deliver. So you have dinner delivered right to the front porch of your bungalow, just at the end of happy hour, as the sun goes down on your maitai and Bora Bora. There's customarily no tipping in French Polynesia - the Polynesians are proudly hospitable - but we Americans in our ignorance are screwing that up. The property is managed by the owners Maite and Moana, a mother/son team who are the nicest people you will ever meet. Moana goes to the airport several times per day and will take you to town if you let him know the day before. The property has a pier that reaches out to the dropoff, where you'll find some of the best snorkeling ever, along with a zipline. You'll see the resident school of tame snappers, damselfish, parrotfish, wrasses, butterflyfish, and even a few lionfish. We saw stingrays, a blacktip reef shark, a spotted eagle ray and a very sociable octopus. The staff can set you up with nifty lagoon tours and land tours. If you're up for a 2500' ten mile hike, you can see the tiare apetahi, rarest flower in the world. So... if you've forked over the cash to fly down to Papeete, and maybe the additional flight to Bora Bora, why not do yourself a favor and while away a couple of weeks at the Sunset Beach Motel? Average down your daily rate. Unless, God forbid, you have to get back to work. If you're lucky enough to be able to work from anywhere, as our son and son-in-law did, you'll find the wifi at reception is fast and reliable. Don't stand under the coconut trees; keep to the middle of the rows.…
Recently stayed 2 days while waiting to pickup a Yacht charter, affordable, tidy clean comfortable accommodation, hosts very helpful. Reasonably central although 5km from town - taxis reasonably priced. Marina restaurant quite close for dinner and they pick you up and deliver back
My wife and I enjoyed several days at the Sunset. I really enjoyed that it was a working plantation and was surprised that our bungalow was only steps from a wonderful lagoon, which offered some nice snorkeling options. We've talked about coming back several times and hope we can in the near future!
The Sunset is terrific. We stayed in bungalow 3 and had great views of the lagoon, easy access to incredible snorkelling right off the end of the pier, and even easier access to the kayaks that are available for your use. Our bungalow was very comfortable and roomy for the 2 of us, with a separate bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. The front porch has more seating and a picnic table, plus more chairs close to the water edge for sunset viewing. We had been on a cruise for 12 days before arriving at the Sunset, so didn’t mind cooking our own meals for a few days. The owner stopped off at a store after our pickup at the airport, and we made 2 other stops at stores during our 5 day stay. The kitchen is well appointed so you can fix most things, including iced drinks. There are bananas near the reception to supplement your meals, and you can ask to have baguettes and croissants ready for pickup each morning at the reception desk. We rented a car to tour the island one day, but others may prefer to have a car for your whole stay. In February there were really not that many dining options - not every “hotel” was open yet - so going out for meals was not our first choice. The marina - 30 minute walk, 5 minute drive - has a bar/restaurant, but there is no Tahitian vibe or terrific view like you get back at the bungalows. The 20 some-odd bungalows are set within a beautifully maintained coconut plantation, so you just need to make sure you stay on the path, and not walk under the trees. The family that owns and operates the Sunset are very kind and helpful.…
Sunset Motel is a very nice place to enjoy Raiatea. The bungalow was so wonderfully arranged (fresh flowers, nice looking). We had a very good time. Thank you for the bookings (diving, day-tour, restaurants ...) and for the transportations.
A true gem! The bungalows are waterfront with everything you need to enjoy a honeymoon or family vacation. A central dock allows guests to sunbathe or dive into crystal clear water in privacy. The Family owned feel caters to seclusion and intimacy, and they offer local fresh fruit at your convenience. Worth every penny, Book Early!
Perfect one-day/one-night stay before our Moorings 10-day bareboat charter. Lovely huge bungalow, with a large living room (with extra single bed, sitting area, dining table), full kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and wonderful front porch overlooking the sea ... where we enjoyed multiple rainbows! The bungalow is simple and clean, and has everything we needed. The staff had filled out bungalow with fresh flowers, and opened 2 fresh coconuts for us to drink the water -- delicious! Be sure to visit the office, as the way there is jam-packed with flowers. Beautiful sea view, with available kayaks. We enjoyed hanging out on the front porch. Very close to the marina for the Moorings -- close enough that we walked over there for lunch.
