Our party of 4 booked our stay well in advance and communication with Willeke leading up to the trip was excellent. Our transfer arrangements from the airport to Bunaken Island worked to plan and we were quickly made to feel very welcome at the resort. Diving on the nearby sites is fantastic (especially if you’re a fan of turtles!) and the operation, managed by Jeremy, is carried out safely and professionally. The meals provided are tasty and filling. Definitely be prepared for the short but steep walk to your bungalow, and pack a torch for when you’re heading to bed after those post-dive beers! We highly recommend the Happy Gecko.

We had our best stay in Indonesia at happy gecko! Bungalows are nice and private, all the meals are delicious and you can enjoy snorkeling just in front of the resort. Dives spots are the most incredible we had in Indonesia and happy gecko team and gear are great! Willeke and Jerry are the nicest host, very helpful and kind it was a real pleasure meeting them. We definitely recommend happy gecko and will come back for sure!

This small resort is great! The owners and crew are really friendly. The guide Jimmy is very relaxed and sees the smallest things, the muscled captain is really funny, the chef makes the best meals and the diving spots are the best for me so far. Go to Likuan II and I! I saw the most fish-schools ever and many many different species never seen before! The bungalows are spacious, clean and look great. There’s the anti-mosquito-scented-incense (love that one!), enough space to dry your towels or swimsuits and even a hammock! Beers are cold, food is great, staff very helpful and the diving the best! Just go.

Willeke and the staff made my stay at Bunaken and the Happy Gecko very enjoyable. I requested vegetarian meals and they were provided, and were delicious. Drinks (soda, water, and beer) are available in the frig in the restaurant open area, on an honor system. (write what you take in a log on the bar). Bring along some easily removed sandals to take off when you enter the dining area. The cottages have ceiling fans but sometimes the power goes off during the day. I handled that by going for a swim if it got too warm in the room. The walk up to the cottages is on a rather steep stepped concrete walkway. Bring a flash light for navigating the steps after dark. Wifi in the dining area was excellent. I adjusted to the time change from home by going to sleep at 7pm and getting up at 4am, which is when I would walk down to the dining area to check my email and post some of my photos from my cellphone for my family to see. I am a snorkeler, not a diver, but went out on the dive boat almost every day. Jerry and Jimmy would drop me off at the edge of the reef, and then pick me up later. I had brought a yellow inflatable buoy, which proved to be very useful for them to find me during the pickup - especially when I did a one way drift snorkel with the current. (I towed the buoy behind me when snorkeling) I found that snorkeling around low tide was the best. At high tides sometimes the currents could be strong. One morning I kept getting pulled off the reef by a current. Another snorkeler said he kept getting pulled on to the reef. I think we might have been on opposite sides of a circular gyro current. I have read that gyro and shifting currents are one of the reasons there are so many fish at Bunaken. On my first afternoon at Bunaken I wanted to get in the sea right away. I asked Willeke what I needed to know. She said head straight out from the resort, over the deep water of the lagoon, and you will encounter the reef. Keep going until you get to the reef wall. (takes about 15 minutes to swim to the reef wall) At very low tides you cannot get over the coral to the reef wall. The only way out is to swim to the left to the channel the boats use to enter the lagoon. I would always swim just outside the reef wall, taking photos back into it, so that I would not accidentally touch the coral with my fins. In two instances during my trip I was in the sea for 3 hours without coming back in. Time passes quickly while you are watching all the life below the surface. I have snorkeled the Florida Keys, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific. Bunaken tops them all. I can't wait to return. The beautiful and varied fish and corals made this a trip of a lifetime. Thank You Willeke, Jerry, Jimmy, and the Happy Gecko cooking and cleaning staff.

Happy Gecko is a small laid resort on Bunaken, which I would highly recommend! All bungalows are situated in a nice garden on a hill side, so there are some steps involved, but the views are amazing. The bungalows are basic, but clean, very spacious and with a good bathroom and a ceiling fan. On the balcony you can enjoy the view from a hammock or one of the seats. The restaurant area is spacious but cosy with bean bags and a lounge area. Cold drinks are available 24/7 as are coffee, tea and drinking water. Wifi is available in the restaurant area as well. Food is delicious, varied and plentiful. Loved the fresh fruit with every meal. The diving was flexible and relaxed but with high safety standards. Dive guide Jimmy is amazing! He finds the tiniest hidden creatures and makes sure everyone in the group is safe and comfortable. The boat is big with plenty of room for both divers and snorkelers. There is coffee, tea and snacks available on the boat during surface intervals. Both boat crew and other staff are great and are always smiling. The owners Willeke and Gerry make sure everyone is looked after and is happy during their stay. Only downside I can think of was the expensive transfer from Manado to Tomohon they arranged which costed 500.000 RPH one way. When we wanted to go back to Manado it would only cost us 200.000 RPH which is over half the price. But, other than that, I had a perfect time at Happy Gecko and was sad to leave after a week. If I ever have the chance to come back to Bunaken, I would most definitely chose Happy Gecko again!

Thanks for your wonderful review, 8aroundtheglobe! We are happy to hear that you had such a great time here and grateful that you took the time and effort to write about it. I must say that I was surprised to read that we supposedly charged you 500.000 rupiah for a transfer to Tomohon. I immediately looked up your bill to check it out. According to your bill we charged you and your friend each 125.000, so you paid the normal price of 250.000 rupiah in total. I think you got confused because it says 0,5 x 250.000 on your bill. And the same for your friend. I have sent you a copy of the original bills in whatsapp. I hope this explains the confusion. Thank you very much for your visit to Happy Gecko and it would be a pleasure to see you here again!
