Establo San Rafael was a bit difficult to find but once we got there, we were well received by Abel. He showed us around and even offered an extra room if we needed it. The pictures and description were accurate to the location. The rooms were comfortable. There was no air conditioning but it wasn't necessary. We were able to sleep with the windows open as there were screens on the windows. Abel even offered to make us dinner to save us from having to go up to town to a restaurant. It is a farm yard setting therefore there were farm sounds (rooster/horses). This was not an issue for us because we knew it would be that way. We enjoyed our one night in this farm setting in the valley. Very peaceful.
What an amazing adventure and an AWESOME time! My wife and I spent 4 days at Establo San Rafeal and the experience was incredible. Brenda and Abel are wonderful hosts who strive to take care of everything for you. Abel's meals were simple but oh so good! Brenda and her interns take such great care of all the horses (and all the other animals around the farm). We did two rides during our visit, Three River Ride and The Lookout. All I can say is WOW!!! If you love riding and want an amazing adventure... Establo San Rafeal is the place you need to visit! I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
We were a family of 4 with 2 kids looking to get a different experience for Christmas. That’s what we got. Abel and Brenda were wonderful host. The food was excellent! Expect a farm stay with no luxury but your kids will be happy learning about horses and other animals. We felt at home! If you’re passionate about horses you should go!
Brenda and Abel are wonderful humans who clearly take pride in their (top notch) work. After seeing how some other places in CR treat their horses, my time at Establo San Rafael was a breath of fresh air. Without using a bit on her horses and engaging in totally in-tune, non-threatening methods with her many horses, Brenda is a wiz at all things Natural Horsemanship. Besides being a gifted horse whisperer, she's a natural teacher and gentle human. Often times animal lovers can be a little hard for us fellow humans to interact with socially - and that's NOT at all the case with Brenda. She is kind, patient, wise, and easy to get along with. As for the place itself... it's both basic and beautiful. It feels like whatever the opposite of corporate is. (I guess that would be homey?) Every morning I was greeted with the wonderful songs of the many birds on and around the farm, the gentle sounds of the horses, and the occasional crowing rooster or bleating goat. Walking out the front door I'd see horses and the beautiful, green mountain straight ahead. It's not the Ritz, but a different kind of paradise entirely. In the evenings the frogs chant as the sun sets, and the sound of the crickets gave me peaceful sleep each night. The meals were hearty and tasty, and the other people on the farm (interns, other guests) were multi cultural and very fun to talk with. As a solo traveler who doesn't speak Spanish I'll also mention that I felt very safe here. I could still have alone time as I wanted it, though, and enjoyed quiet time in a hammock, dunking in the pool, and hiking to the nearby waterfall and swimming hole. This place is truly a gem. I hope to come back again and again!…
