A wonderful experience. I wish we could have stayed longer. After long days exploring Tokyo, it was wonderful to come home to a peaceful, relaxing space for the night. The Onsens ( baths ) were soothing relief after a long day of exploring. The Sawa family were incredibly welcoming, it truly felt like home. The tatami mats we amazingly comfortable.... More

The moment I walked in I was welcomed by name! Everything was so tastefully done and the attention to detail is amazing. There is no comparison to the other ryokans I stayed in and regret not staying at the Sawanoya for my entire stay in Tokyo. If you are looking for a traditional ryokan experience I cannot recommend this strongly... More

Stayed in single room for 3 nights.Located at walking distance from Nezu station, which is a great and quiet neighborhood at night with a lot of good hidden restaurants. The family is very welcoming. Definitely will choose this ryanko if I happened to be in Tokyo again.

My family and I stayed at Sawanoya (for 9 days). This Ryokan is family owned and operated. The family is very warm and welcoming. We rented 2 rooms (1 with a bathroom/1 without bathroom). In the mornings they serve breakfast for a small fee (eggs & toast 325 yen). Coffee & tea are complimentary. The Ryokan is within walking distance... More

We made the perfect choice with this Ryokan and loved everything about it. Wonderful service, spotlessly clean and the perfect but quiet location. We especially liked the baths and never had to wait to use them during our 6 nights in Tokyo. We liked having a sink in the room to wash hands etc. and the spotlessly clean toilet is... More

Myself and my husband stayed here for 8 nights in May this year. We really loved it so much. This was our first visit to Japan and we heard so much about Ryokan Sawanoya and it seemed the perfect place to stay. It lived up to all our expectations. We stayed in this Ryokan to try the experience, and we wer glad about it. It's well situated in Yanaka and close to Ueno which were our favorite places in Tokyo. I only stayed here for 2 nights but I wished I could've stayed longer. The family was very welcoming and provided us with some useful maps and a microfibre cloth for cleaning phones and screens. Hosts are very nice and helpful. I was a little worried about the shared baths and toilets, but only had to wait once in 3 nights. Located very close to tons of little restaurants that pop up at night. Rooms are small but totally sufficient. Good value. Don't miss the soba place around the corner for breakfast.

We (couple, 23&24) wanted to stay in a Ryokan during our trip in Japan and we were looking for an affordable one which still offered the traditional Japanese experience. We stayed in a room without bath for one night and we loved it! We did not stay in other ryokans, so we cannot compare our experience here to other ryokans.... More

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighborhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
