This is a very cosy, comfortable ryokan run by the Sawa family. My wife and I were given a warm welcome by Mr Sawa, and he was helpful to explain all the attractions in Nezu and the amenities of the Ryokan to us. The room (with attached toilet and bath) that we stayed was clean, and comfortable, the electrical sockets...

A friend of mine and I stayed here as part of a longer trip in March. I can only really mirror things that have been well covered in the other reviews. The rooms were well kept and the overall place was very neat. The baths were a nice addition. Good area and not a bad walk over to Ueno sites....

Very comfortable and well situated ryokan. Extremely helpful staff, spotlessly clean, everything you could need supplied. Close to subway and train to airports. Nice neighbourhood, very safe. Ueno park close by which is delightful, you could easily spend the day just in this park. lPlenty of eating options and convenience stores close by. Owners speak good English and very helpful...

Very friendly, family-run Ryokan. This place is spotless, professional, helpful, and offers a simple American breakfast option in the mornings. We sprung for a private bath and toilet room but could have easily used the shared facilities since they were very conveniently located on each floor.

Finally had the pleasure of staying at this ryokan. I had tried before on a previous trip to Tokyo but they were closed for renovations. This time we managed to book a room for one night. I had heard about the ryokan from a friend. All I can say is that the ryokan did not disappoint. Mr Sawanoya was so...

This was my third time staying there. The owners recongnised me immediately and felt right at home. Easy check in. Room small (what I expected) but clean and very well presented. As a single room there is a basin available but no shower or bath. I have no issue as there is a traditional (what do you expect) bath/shower available...

Lovely to experience a traditional Ryokan and we really liked the quiet & attractive neighbourhood. We were there during the cherry blossom and the Ryokan is a short walk from Ueno Park. When I looked on the website, rooms were available for 3 nights. I didn’t complete the online form as it says ‘we may take a time before we...

We stayed for 3 nights and found the staff very friendly from start to finish. They provide a nice map of the local area highlighting restaurants and shrines. A western style breakfast of eggs on toast is available at a very good peice. There's two traditional japanese baths downstairs that you can use first come first serve. Great location for...

Loved this place. It was spotlessly clean. Lovely older couple run it and we're very helpful. It has two traditional baths which were divine after walking all day. It is in a quiet picturesque neighbourhood. A real bargain. Wish we had booked two nights.

We stayed her as a family of there, myself, husband and 8 yr old son, for 4 nights during the Easter Holidays. We chose this Ryokan based on the reviews here and because we want to experience something authentic whilst in Japan rather than a bland city hotel. We were delighted with our choice. We were welcomed warmly after a...

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighborhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
