Detailed Reviews
The hotel is a bit weathered, but very clean, slept 3 travellers in separate beds comfortably. Pillows were paper thin, but the beds were comfortable. Location is great to access trains and local shinjuku area, without being in the busy nightlife zone

Our stay was divided into 2 nights each with an excursion to Hakone in between. Access via Shinokubo station is a challenge if you bring toddlers as there is not lift or escalator to the platform. Location-wise, Shinjuku is only 10-15 minutes walk away but hookers abound at night. I found it interesting that they were quite cultured (no harassing) but not all people would be comfortable staying on such a backdrop.
The hotel is relatively new and we liked the compartmentalized toilet, sink and shower concept. Room was very clean and in good condition. The fridge was even better than some of the relatively higher end hotels we stayed in. Free Wi-Fi available throughout. Bed mattress need to be improved as we could feel the springs. Walls were a bit thin so it may be a bit unpleasant if you have noisy neighbours. Also, the dryers were not effective and it took a long time for the clothes to dry out so take note if you plan to do laundry.
The staff were top notch. Polite, friendly and very helpful. We returned from Hakone to find that our luggage was already moved into the room. Held our luggage after check out before our late evening flight home. For those travelling via budget airlines especially, this hotel had all the necessary tools to get ready; weighing scale, masking tape etc. I was able to properly seal my extra box of souvenirs and managed to pre-purchase the right weight of check in baggage hence saving a lot of grief at the airport.
Overall, I was pretty impressed with my stay here and I would definitely recommend this hotel. For those travelling as a family, just note the disadvantages of staying in this area. If you are fine with it (as I was), this place could be for you.

1. The price for a room of two single bed(like 10000JPY from 3PM to 10AM) is not cheap around that area(the area near the Korean Town near Shin Okubo Subway station);
2. The room is very clean;
3. The service is good, the people their are very friendly;
3. If you choose to live on the first floor, be prepared to get a set of ear plugs, kind of noisy, and I can hear cats crying at night, even with all the windows closed, scary...
4. Self served Laundry available, 100JPY;

Response from 新大久保国際ホテル, 広報担当マネージャー at Shin Okubo International Hotel
Responded Oct 5, 2011
Thank you for your recent stay at Shin-Okubo International Hotel. Our hotel has just opened in this summer. Since it had become almost at full occupancy and without any reservations from you in advance,we could only prepare a spare room in that day with standard price at front. You can use our online reservation service to get the special rate. As for the noisy of cat, we will take prompt measures for better accommodation environment. Thank you and we are waiting for your next visit.

My husband and I travelled all over Japan for 2 weeks and stayed at the Shin-Okubo International Hotel Annex for 3 nights at the end of our trip.
Of all the rooms we stayed in during our 2 weeks in Japan (all of a similar price range to this one), this was the only one that we were very disappointed in.
The room had a window, but it was so low and close to other buildings that we never saw any daylight in our room. For the duration of our stay, there were small flies floating about inside our room and the whole room felt and smelt damp. The beds were horrifically uncomfortable, you could feel every spring - I had to sleep on top of an extra duvet just to manage to dull them.
During our stay, every morning at 8am we were woken with drilling and work going on right next to our room on the street. When we left the room every day around 9 there were 15+ workmen directly outside all sitting smoking and talking.
The location of the property was ok, which gains it the only star I feel it deserves.
I would definitely not return to this hotel.

I didn't expect anything much from this hotel when I made my reservation, because I chose this hotel just because it had good price and good reviews. But when I arrived at this hotel, I was totally surprised to see that this hotel was actually a very good option for budget travelers. The location is good - it's only 5 minute walk from Shin-Okubo Train Station. Being near from the station is extremely important for travelers who want to catch the train to get to Airport Train or Bus early in the morning; because both airport train and bus can be caught from Shinjuku Station which was only 1 stop from Shin-Okubo. The hotel staff was friendly - and they speak English well. The room was surprisingly spacious, clean, and neat. The bed was comfy and the private bathroom was fine. Internet connection was available for free in the lobby and the room. For me, the quality of the hotel was far beyond my expectation, considering the good price that I got. So, basically I have nothing to complain about this hotel. If I come to Tokyo again, I will definitely recommend stay again at this hotel.

The location is great! Very close o shinjuku, Shin okubo and okubo stations.
Staff was pleasant and room was pretty big and convince but shower was terrible. The smell was like mold and it felt inconvenience. There is all that you need in the room. Only problem is that there is no elevator- the man in the front desk helped us take the luggage up but we had to rake them down by our self.
Another annoying thing is the check out- 10:00 am sharp. If you late you need to pay 1000 yen per hour.

Location not great: After getting lost from the station and ending up on the wrong side of town, I had to take a cab to find it but the address he couldn't understand eventually we got to the hotel. There is no lift so if like me you are on the third floor you will have to lug your bag upstairs.
Hotel room was clean and basic but had everything that you would need for a short stay.
I must comment on how good the customer service was. After staying for one night I left to climb Fuji but left my bags here, when I came back the next day I asked the girls on the desk to ring me a taxi to take me to my hotel. As it was raining they couldn't get through on the phones so one of the women went and stood in the rain and hailed a cab for me, I don't know many places where you would get service like this!

After staying in a place with a bathroom I could barely fit in, coming to the Shin-Okubo International was such a breath of fresh air. The bathroom is really spacious, with a separate toilet. The bedrooms are twins, so if you're a couple like we are you'll have separate beds, but it was worth it for the space, as our last bed barely fit us and we were kicking each other in our sleep.
Location is great - only a few minutes walk to the station which is on the Yamanote line, so you can get to most places quite easily. Also between two main roads so there are plenty of options for food. Some seem to have an issue about it being in the Korean area, as if Japan was purely made up of people of Japanese ethnicity, which I don't quite understand. But I liked the vibrancy of the area. Didn't feel unsafe at all. Having its own laundry with a free dryer was really handy too.
The only issue I had with the hotel was that sound travelled. We would exhaust ourselves walking all day and have quite early nights, and people talking loudly in their rooms would travel into yours, and sound like they were talking right outside your door, even though they weren't. Woke me up a couple of nights. Other than that it was a rather quiet hotel and outside noises didn't travel inside.

We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel layout, in particular the size of the bathroom, which is technically made up of three different spaces: a center spacious area with just a wash basin in it, and two separate spaces each for the shower area and the WC area – quite a welcomed change from the claustrophobic all-in-one cubicle type of bathroom as with most other hotels.
Other than this, expect the same qualities as with many Japanese hotel of this price range, clean, organized, slightly aged but well-maintained, and with staff that is impersonal but efficient.

On weekend nights during the golden week holidays, my wife and I stayed in room 203. Although it was the high tourist season, the accommodation fee was the single price of 10,500 JPY.
The room was not big, but wide enough to stay for two persons. Air conditioner, refrigerator, wifi and clean shower room wewe in place. The hotel is in the Korean town. 24/7 CVS is a 2-minute walk and the downtown of Shinjuku is a 15-minute walk.
If you stay more than two nights, the eye mask and the earplug might be useful items because the sound of taking shower from the adjacent room was slightly noisy and the black-out curtain was not installed in the room.
