Cristal Azul is the perfect destination for those looking to step off the beaten path and experience what Costa Rica was like before the world arrived. A totally private property with no public access, guests enjoy 180’ panoramic ocean views and the ultimate in barefoot luxury in a rustic setting. Prepare to unplug, unwind, and get lost in paradise! Great times are had here and memories of a lifetime are created! Four cozy "cabinas" guarantee there is never a crowd; each is equipped with AC, ceiling fans, screened doors that let in the ocean breeze and sound of the surf below, hot water, outdoor garden showers, fine linens, Raw Botanicals organic bath products, and the most impressive views in the area. An oversized, open air Rancho provides a luxe “Glamping” experience with an honor bar and billiards table as well as dining and lounge area ample enough for all guests. The vanishing edge pool overlooks six miles of undeveloped beach and provides a front row seat to the most amazing stargazing under the canopy of the Milky Way! A full typical Costa Rican breakfast is served daily and a chef prepares dinner nightly for guests in the Rancho upon demand. The only Costa Rica owned and operated hotel in San Miguel, your hosts also own LocosCocos (#1 Restaurant in area, #1 Beach Bar in Costa Rica; Lonely Planet)which is a guest favorite for sunset dinners on the beach. This has been an idyllic beach house for our family many times and it is a place we will return to often. Henner and Zene have created a wonderful oasis at Cristal Azul, it feels like your own place at the beach. Unrivaled privacy, incredibly comfortable and tasteful you do not feel like you are a tourist on vacation here. Especially with the care and attention you receive by your hosts and their staff. We love that the cabinas are meant for one thing, down time in the AC and sleeping, oh…and cool outdoor showers. Set apart from the rancho and pool, our group can have as much fun as they like in the Rancho (they have a professional pool table, nice touch) while others rest, and no one bothers the other. The pool is something you must dip yourself in to believe. It’s often a topic at dinner on cold winter nights. Cooking is a breeze, literally, on the grill overlooking the ocean and Z&H helped with veggies and fish if we couldn’t catch our own. Dinners and any food at their spot, LocosCocos, right on the beach is worth tossing out any plans to prepare lunches or dinners. It was our favorite food in the area (to note it’s a cool “lunch box” style joint with picnic tables right on beach serving typical local seafood from Henner’s grandmothers recipes…. it’s amazing, be prepared to spend days there). Finally, be sure you have 4WD but trust us it’s worth it. Cristal Azul is hands down one of our favorite places on the planet to visit.

We heard about Cristal Azul from another hotel owner and as soon as I went to the website and read TripAdvisor reviews, I knew we had to go . . . we are so glad we did. The first two thirds of our 9 day Costa Rica trip were action packed and I kept hoping that our three nights at Cristal Azul would be our "vacation on our vacation". Zene and Henner are the owners, Zene from Darien Connecticut, and Henner, an old school native Costa Rican. We adored them both!
We brought our two boys, 9 and 7, the 7 year old having his birthday the day we arrived. Zene was sure to get all of our details squared away long before our trip and was great to plan a special birthday dinner and cake for our first meal!
The setting is breathtakingly beautiful. You feel quite the movie star sitting high above the Pacific with incredible views, gorgeous natural landscaping, the awesome infinity pool, the Rancho (where we spent most of our time) . . . . Everything is very well appointed and well maintained. Just know when researching that the real thing is even prettier than the pictures!
Great care was taken to spoil our family. It was heavenly. Breakfasts were gorgeous with fresh juices, the best french toast any of my family has ever had (and that is saying something) . . . thank you to Crislee (sp?) for serving her famous recipe . . . fruit, perfect coffee, watermelon juice, mint water, bacon, etc . . . Fresh flowers on the table, all served in El Rancho with ocean breezes . . . I will never forget it! At breakfast we discussed meal options for dinner and enjoyed fresh clams and coconut shrimp and garlic shrimp and chicken fajitas and all things traditional with many concessions for my very picky eater. I think I managed to put Henner's famous hot sauce on everything I ate!
There is a wonderful game cabinet in El Rancho. Not a dusty, outdated, missing parts kind of game cabinet, but many BRAND new games, researched on Amazon by Zene to come up with the very most enjoyable. My boys loved everything, as did we all as a family. There is an iPod at your disposal with every song you can think of, and Zene shared many old family games that my children got a kick out of as well. We also were quite entertained my the many dogs who are part of the Cristal Azul family.
Somehow Zene and Henner managed to spoil and entertain while still allowing quality family time. That is not an easy trick. They are cool folks with great stories and we loved hanging out and drinking cold beer and fancy rum . . . Oh and there was always a fancy tropical drink at sunset!
The rooms are, again, tasteful and well appointed, the bathroom was the biggest we had the whole time we were in Costa Rica, not counting the huge outdoor shower! Lovely. We stayed in the cabina closest to the Rancho because it is the one with the bunk beds.
An entire monkey family would come hang out at dawn and dusk in the mango tree behind our cabin . . . every day . . . best monkey viewing we had the whole trip right at our room!
This was only our first trip to Costa Rica, so I don't know how Playa San Miguel/Punta Coyote compare to other beaches, but my guess is that this beach, though a little hard to get to, is what everyone THINKS a Costa Rican beach is all about, when in fact, this is one of the last of its kind. We were practically the only ones around. We went to a sandy restaurant at Punta Coyote called Tanga's that was unlike anything I have ever seen . . . super rustic, super views, BEST FISH I HAVE EVER HAD . . . . Listen to all of Zene and Henner's recommendations, they know the place like the backs of their hands and we are so glad that we got to share a little bit in their paradise!!
Can't wait to return!

I understand the title seems rather over dramatic and exaggerated in nature, and if you're as big of a skeptic as me perhaps even suspicious. I do not blame you one bit.
I was in the same shoes, despite the lack of reviews under my belt (I'm working on it!), I've been using tripadvisor for the past 3 years and I spend a good amount of time before each trip, a total of at least a few hours before leaving the home country, just comparing places, and planning routes. It is not an exaggeration to say I've looked at at least a few hundred hotels/b&b/excursion places on tripadvisor, so when I saw Cristal Azul's reviews with 5/5 ratings in such predominance, I was in disbelief. Afterall, this is a website where not even a $400++/night get such score.
Here is how they do it.
1) They treat you as if you're their extended family, a guest at their home at the very least, not just a customer or a source of income.
> They perfect this by accommodating only a handful of guests at any given time. In fact, they only have 4 rooms, and yes each one has amazing ocean view that just rolls off the hill they're situated on. The sheets and towels are clean, and A/C runs strong yet quiet. > They have a number of employees that are all more than willing to help. > The owners Zene and Henner themselves have impeccable hospitality. They will make sure, every morning you will have a bottomless cup of Costa Rican coffee, and breakfast be served when you're ready. They will make sure there's always cold juice, beer, mint water in the fridge. They will make sure everything in the room is just the way you expected. They will share their own medication if you feel ill(yes, this happened). They will be there with a container of rice if your phone accidentally falls in the pool(yes, this happened). They will tell you as much as you can take in about anything you'd like to know, from local politics, what locals do for living, how the area has transformed over the years to what to do tomorrow and where to go/eat. Do not make the same mistake we did, if you find them as interesting and fun to talk to as we, along with vast majority of these reviewers did, ask them to join, otherwise their respect for your privacy will have them limiting their pleasant "interference".
2) They have amazing food. > Let's face the fact that no matter what restaurant I compare Cristal Azul to, the odds of the reader of this review in this world wide web having been to the same restaurant is in between slim and none. Luckily, there is a general rule called you get what you pay for. Granted, there are always restaurants that sell the atmosphere and experience more than quality of ingredients and flavour dazzling dishes, but for the sake of this review, let's put them out of the equation. Bottom line, if you were to ask me "how much would you pay to have the same Cristal Azul dinner here at home?" My answer would be somewhere between $70-$100/person. I still remember the perfectly seasoned and seared local catch of the day(literally) tuna fillet with a side of rice and fresh salad including grilled banana desert and a few glasses that cost me not even half of that at Cristal Azul. > The mango tree that you'll find behind the rooms, if you're not watching the monkeys eat the mangoes, pick one off the tree, for once you can be assured what you have in your hand is 100% organic, preservative free mango. > Even with such amazing food at their disposal, they'll give you tips, in fact encourage you to to eat at restaurants in the surrounding area, just so you get a richer experience.
3) Zene and Henner's unique combination; American born and raised "Ex-pat" and Costa Rican born and raised local, offer variety of insights from easier to grasp perspective for people from North America. Them, having traveled many countries as well, I don't doubt are able to offer you a very global, and non blinkered perspective on many things not limited to just Costa Rica. If you have difficulty communicating with them in English or Spanish, I can only suspect the lack of skill on your end. They may even speak more languages, but I can't comment on those.
4) Their hillside pool's infinity edge seemingly spilling over onto the pacific ocean in distance, that picture and the idea of being in the 10'N of the equator sun, that was enough for me to book the place. (Mind you, I booked this place before I even booked the flight, I had the time off, and once I saw this place, I didn't care how and when, I just knew I was going there). The view, and that certain serenity that can only wrap you once you're at a certain distance from other businesses and street noises, they have it all.
All in all, no matter how much you read about this, no matter how many 1000 words worth of pictures you look at, you will get more by visiting this place. Don't get sucked into other places in San Miguel or the province of Guancaste the way we did(unless it is for something that can't be offered by Cristal Azul i.e volcano view), or should I say go ahead and do so, so you can draw your own conclusion that this is THE place to go, either way, I'd like to take this last bit to thank Zene and Henner along with the staff members for everything from their suggestions and tips to the food to the warm heart you have reached out to us with. This vacation was definitely one of those that nourished my soul thanks to you guys. Take care, god bless!

I do not write reviews but am now going too! Cristal Azul impressed me so much I became a member of TA to help spread the word about what an amazing place it is and how Zene & Henner have created something very unique & upscale, yet not out of reach to many travelers…yet??!! We were not looking for a five star resort because we find them impersonal and a bit tacky. We prefer “hidden gems” such as this that allow you to immerse yourself in the true character and culture of the area visiting. In this case, we wanted to be in a very tropical setting, small, a bit luxe for those much needed creature comforts and at a resort having minimal impact on the area and again, that feeling of immersion. Henner and Zene have not missed a beat at CA and you cannot go wrong here, worth every penny! Rooms are perfectly appointed and have the most amazing ocean view we have ever seen in many years of travel. There are not many views like that left in the world so we spent most of our mornings and evenings just taking it all in. Queen beds were very comfy, sheets crisp and high thread count but my favorite thing was the super soft, fresh smelling towels. The only ones we had in our entire three weeks in CR. Beach and pool towels provided/huge/and changed daily. (Along with everything you would want to take to the beach…even Badminton…we are planning a Round Robin Tournament when we return with friends!). More than ample space for belongings in the cabinas and bathroom, gorgeous teak furniture that we learned was made locally and the highlight for us was the outdoor shower! I will never look at mine the same again. We also really liked the retractable laundry line that allowed us to leave our wet bathing suits outside to dry and not have them lingering damp inside our bathroom. And the screen doors were genius! We spent a few nights in AC until we realized that with the screens open, we could fall asleep and wake up the sound of the waves below, monkeys and parrots! But…..trust us you will only use your room to sleep and shower because you have the rancho and pool area; your personal heaven on earth and very hard to leave. Overall, photos do not do this place justice…the views literally take your breath away! And if you like to hike or bird, the grounds are loaded with wildlife and you have access to excellent places to hike! Food, best we had on our trip but take advice of your hosts and check out the places they recommend for lunch. Eat dinner in! Every meal was planned for us, with us. Very nice touch. We appreciated greatly the care that went into making sure we tried all the delicacies they had to offer and also the attention to what we could not or chose not to try. The hill up to reach the resort was not as tough as we anticipated and we actually saw lots of wildlife on each drive so...our vote is thumbs up! You can’t get a view like that without working a little! Best part – apart from everything Henner and Zene have created at Cristal Azul was the privacy and the views!!!! Nice note: CA is only hotel in town where you wont have other tourists stopping by to see rooms or locals crowding the bar. This is the real Costa Rica folks and I have to admit, leaving mad me very very sad. That view will be with me always. Bravo & Cheers to you both, we will be back for sure, keep the hot sauce bowl full Henner and guard that family recipe!
Overall about San Miguel:
We spent five days in San Miguel and three weeks in Costa Rica. This is an area of Costa Rica absolutely worth visiting if you want to see what the country probably was like before the world arrived. Having now spent time in SM, and dined at the two other hotel restaurants and seen the options to stay at, we offer this to travelers: If you are an experienced traveler expecting comfort and style, Cristal Azul is the only option. If you are looking to splurge and treat yourself, go for it, it is more than worth every penny we spent! Backpackers will find a hip spot on the beach that while in need of a some handy work, is perfectly suitable for young surfers looking for a good time, and a bargain. Only hotel in town right on the beach. Another hotel oddly located far off the beach had good food and an eager to please owner and staff. New, modern and cement it is perfect if you like the sterile, South Beach experience, not Costa Rican/tropical beach by any means. A third hotel with lovely looking grounds on the main road was closed but appeared very charming from what we could see from the road. Bottom line, as we realized one afternoon chatting in the rancho, Cristal Azul is the only Costa Rican owned hotel in town so if you want the real deal…stay there! Bring plenty of sunblock and a good hat, you won't need bug block surprisingly! Water was perfectly drinkable and delicious. Don't miss Mike's Butterfly Farm tour or lunch at Tanga's!

I booked this property on hotels.com based on the photos and reviews. Soon after my booking, the owner repeatedly emailed me telling me I had to cancel because expedia made a mistake with my booking. The owner explained that during that time rooms are held for previous customers so there should not have been inventory, the rate was too low, and the rate should be nonrefundable. I can understand these practices during a peak travel period; however, to blame the customer for an error on the property and booking partners part is ridiculous. Doing business comes with errors that need to be rectified and you don't do that by blaming the customer. The last email I received said that if I did not cancel my booking that I would be charged the booking fee that they normally pay Expedia! Seriously? This was not my problem--fix it!

Response from enez, Owner at Cristal Azul
Responded May 31, 2016
TO NOTE: THIS MEMBER DID NOT SAY WITH US! Dear Mary, Welcome to TripAdvisor, I see this is your first review! Please allow me to restate again how very sorry I am for the error that occurred with your online booking with Hotels.com. As I stated in my original email to you that I sent the day I received the communication via the OTA, the dates you requested (Christmas 2016) had been booked for months and were blocked not only on our personal online reservation manager (Siteminder) but also on Expedia. Hotels.com and Booking.com. The error was 100% our of my control - somehow their system let your thru - it was a fluke. I am truly sorry. Upon learning of the error I contacted you immediately knowing that the peak season books very early to ensure you had time to find a room for the upcoming Christmas holiday rather than wait for Hotels.com to resolve this issue (as I am sure they would have never even noticed the error) thereby; leaving you without the destination of your liking/choice upon arrival in Costa Rica. That would have been awful for you. I contacted the main sites that manage the hundreds of OTA's out there and the issue was immediately resolved and the dates were properly blocked in their online reservation channel manager. I am sorry they did not reach out to you personally to apologize. The reason we encouraged you to cancel yourself was due to the fact that we were told, that you would be charged the full cancellation fee by the Hotels.com...NOT us! I wanted to ensure that you did not incur any penalties for something that was truly out of both of our hands. The online sites do not handle or receive payments on our behalf but by your joining their services you are obligated to their rules. They would have charged your credit card had you not taken that reservation out of their system, I was only trying to help. We would never charge a guest for something like this, that would be so tacky and unprofessional! Not our style Mary at all! We are here to work with you and create incredible vacations for guests, not to nickel and dime you. I also offered assistance to help you find a fabulous place in our area so you could still enjoy the pristine beauty that the San Miguel area offers and the chance to use our corporate account to book a rental car that would have entitled to you incredibly discounted rates and perks. I was surprised to have heard nothing back and assumed you had found a great place, which we truly hope you did! As you stated, our reviews and photos are fabulous and I can state that our reputation speaks for itself. You cannot win multiple awards on TripAdvisor from guests (Travelers Choice), and from TripAdvisor itself, (Certificate of Excellence) if you have poor business practices. It's just not possible. We take great pride in Cristal Azul and the outstanding personal attention we give to each guest from the beginning of the booking process to the time we wave goodbye in the rancho. There was no blame passed on to you by any means rather, we jumped thru hoops to fix what was again, a problem out of our hands, and did so immediately. We hope you were able to find a great place to spend your holiday and the offer for special rates and perks on your rental is still in place should you wish to utilize it. We only work with the best so you are guaranteed a comfy ride! Pura Vida!

Henner, one of the owners explained this as not merely a phrase, but a way of life! This place is the epitome of Pura Vida! I have traveled all over the world both for work and pleasure and I have to say, this was one of the best vacations I have ever had. We rented the entire place, 4 stand alone cabins for 3 families. 5 Adults and 5 kids (ages 5-10) and we had an extra cabin so plenty of room. The cabins were immaculate, and very comfortable and the out door shower is a great touch! Zene and Henner the hosts, were amazing, friendly and super attentive. Our friends are all experienced, adventurous travelers and we all wanted an out of the way place, away from the typical "touristy" destination. We were here during the busy "semana santa" (Holy Week) yet the nearest beach, Playa San Miguel and Playa Coyote were almost empty. Definitely out of the way, but not inaccessible. Definitely rent a 4x4 preferably a larger one, you will need the better suspension and you will be more comfortable in the long run. Lots of driving on gravel roads, but that was part of the fun! Zene and Henner also own a "Cevicheria" (beach snack shop) LocosCocos on the beach directly below the hotel and the food was "AMAZING" We could eat on the beach or at the "Rancho" the outdoor common area that is fully stocked with games, pool table, comfy couches and a hammock! We hired their chef Marco for a special birthday dinner one night and everything was perfect. Zene was extremely helpful in recommending and helping to organize other activities such as zip lining and sport fishing. The full breakfast was excellent as was the rest of Zene and Henner's staff. All very helpful and friendly. Everyone, all ages, had a great time and we will definitely be back!

After visiting Costa Rica for so many years I decided to take a trip to Playa San Miguel. As soon as I got there the views from the tallest mountain which Crystal Azul is on just took my breath away its beyond this world the beauty and as much as I love the ocean I was able to get a full view of the pacific ocean, love love this place. As far the host Henner and Zene they are the most friendly and caring people that I have met on this trip. They have many suggestions and will definitely guide you around this beautiful area. If your a true nature person this is the place monkeys, frogs, lizards and of course all the beautiful landscaping. I had an amazing time there and felt really relaxed and rejuvenated after just a few days. I thank God that I was able to see something like this and I also thank Zene and Henner for their great hospitality. Cant wait to go back and recharge.

I can't say enough of how relaxing this place is. Henner & Zene are terrific hosts from the minute we met them. First, the place is perched up on top of a huge hill, requiring 4WD to get to, with the most fabulous view of Playa San Miguel. The infinity pool and view from the covered tiki area are to die for. It reminded me of something you would see in Hawaii or in the South Pacific. There are only 4 cabinas so even if it's full, it's really quiet and you feel like you have the place to yourself. I highly recommend you don't go anywhere for dinner because Henner & Zene will get you the freshest catch of the day - we had red snapper and shrimp that was caught that morning. The shrimp tasted like lobster! The rooms are comfortable with a great outdoor shower. Wake up in the morning to relaxing by the pool or reading a book in a hammock before you have a typical Costa Rican breakfast. This place is off the beaten path, about 1 1/2 hours from Samara and totally worth it. Playa San Miguel is fantastic. If you are looking for a very relaxing place to stay, this should be at the top of your list. I highly recommend it....you won't be disappointed!!

I had a great trip up to cristal azul with my two friends over Columbus day week end. Over all it was a great time. We ate mountains of sushi and hung out at the spectacular pool table there. The amazing infinity pool sure didn't hurt either. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a great time in paradise!

Cristal Azul is a fantastic upscale boutique property located in Playa San Miguel. The owners, Zene adn Heiner, are wonderful hosts....pouring cocktails and serving delicious appetizers, such as baby white clams! They are super friendly and knowledgeable about San Miguel and Costa Rica in general. This serene setting overlooks the most breathtaking view up and down the beach. You can sit for hours in their infinity pool gazing off into the distance of the ocean. They have birds, monkeys, and tons of wildlife right onsite...in fact, a pizote came to share breakfast with us from the banana tree right near by! The rooms are charming and cozy...great bedding and a wonderful private outdoor shower for cooling off. Again, the view takes it away... We had such a wonderful time getting to know Zene and Heiner, and would recommend Cristal Azul to anyone looking for a top notch experience with great service and reasonable pricing.
