Marataba is a malaria-free 23000 hectare private concession within the Big5 Marakele National Park (Limpopo, South Africa). Just four hours from Johannesburg, this is a sanctuary where busy people can find themselves again by connecting with nature. We were rendered breathless by the dramatic Waterberg mountains, vast plains, rich animal diversity and winding rivers cutting through the landscape of the Marakele National Park. Rich red mountain rock meets lush green plains (where you will find yellowwood and cedar trees, 5m high cycads and tree ferns). All of the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats, as well as an amazing variety of birds (including the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures in the world, with more than 800 breeding pairs) have settled here. Marataba Safari Lodge is a simple extension of the natural environment beyond its walls - rich, bold, organic and patently magnificent. Whether you prefer your own company or that of new-found friends, there are a number of spots from which to soak up the view - hammock, pool lounger or grassy patch. On the menu for your pleasure is a smorgasbord of activities from which to choose. Whether game drive, walking trail, sunset river excursion on Miss Mara, or a private dinner for two, there is never enough time to exhaust the many ways there are to love this place.

We spent 4 days at Safari lodge and we loved it. The service was top class in all areas of the lodge- our guide, Robyn, was superb and all other staff members couldn’t do enough for us. The lodge is kid friendly, with a kids club and awesome staff. My kids didn’t want to leave - they said it was one of the best holidays they have had. We saw the most incredible game and we can not wait to return.

One review is not enough to describe the magical, memorable and super special experience we had at Marataba Safari Lodge! From the moment we arrived and were greeted by Bianca and Ryan, our game ranger, I just knew the weekend was going to be one for the record books! From the exquisite interior and breathtaking surroundings...to the elaborate and delish food...to Ryan's extensive knowledge and amazing sights...to the warm hospitality and excellent service...I have become your biggest fan overnight! My 1-year old totally fell in love with Ryan so we will have to be back :) Thank you again to Marataba, Iconic Africa and everyone involved to ensuring one of the best weekends I've ever had! We can't wait to be back. So much love xxx

We recently spent two nights at Marataba Safari lodge and boy was it incredible! From the moment we arrived the hospitality, friendliness and service was out of this world! We travelled as a group of 5 friends as well as an 11 month old baby. Ava became friends with & loved all the staff at Marataba, especially our field guide Ryan! I cannot put into words how amazing our trip was, the staff catered to every request with a smile and went out of their way to make sure that the baby had everything she needed, they even provided plastic cutlery for her to use at all her meals as well as her own special high chair. The kindness that was shown towards our group and baby Ava is something we will never forget. We left feeling like we had made new friends! We will forever cherish the wonderful memories made at Marataba! Now onto the other wonderful experiences we had during our stay... our tents (I don’t even know if I could call them that because they were so luxurious) were beyond beautiful. From the views from our tent to the linen, toiletries, mini bar fridge and decor - I truly cannot fault a single thing. Being able to lay in bed and be so in touch with nature and listening to the birds chirp and lions roar was so special, I haven’t had such a good nights sleep in a while as I had at Marataba. We were even escorted from the main lodge area to our tent at night by a wonderful, friendly porter named Frans, who always assisted carrying the baby’s stroller with a smile. Let me not even get started on the food.. because I definitely think I gained a few kilos after the weekend lol! The food absolutely surpassed all expectations. The variety was great and everything was prepared with love! Every meal we had over the weekend (which were many!) was delicious, fresh and always served hot. The meal options for kiddies are also great and Ava loved every meal she had. On our last evening we were treated to a beautiful buffet/braai style dinner outside, the area was set up with warm fires and lanterns hanging from the trees. We also got to try some delicious local dishes. The atmosphere was festive as all the guests had the opportunity to dine with their field guides if they chose to. We got to know Ryan better and truly felt part of the Marataba family! Our daily game drives were the absolute highlight of our trip. Each group of guests are given a guide and vehicle for the weekend which makes the experience so special and personalized. Our guide Ryan was the best! He made each game drive so memorable and educational. He was also so patient and accommodating with our group as we had a baby with us. We had the best sightings during our trip and were able to see, Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Hyena, Giraffe, Cheetah, Hippo as well as a variety of birds and buck. We were even fortunate enough to see a leopard run across the road whilst leaving the lodge on our way home as well as a herd of Buffalo which meant we saw the big 5! On our afternoon drives each day we would stop for a delicious sundown drink and snacks. Another highlight was the beautiful water safari experience. We went on a pontoon barge one of the large dams and had Amarula coffee and snacks whilst watching the Hippos in the water and other wildlife along the banks. Overall our stay was incredible and we cannot fault a single thing! We will never forget the wonderful memories made during our stay at Marataba. A special thank you to all the wonderful staff at Marataba, especially Ryan and Bianca. We will DEFINITELY return in the near future. All our love, Carla, Tayla, Dudley, Kendal, Brandon and baby Ava x

We had SUCH an amazing time at Marataba Safari Lodge! From the very moment we were collected at OR Tambo Airport to the moment we were dropped back at the end of our stay-the staff and experience at Marataba excelled in every way. I am a mountain guide myself and can be quite particular about service, the feel of a place, the overall experience-all of it. Our guide, Helen was so friendly, warm, interesting, happy & calm. She was so easy to be with for hours on end and went with the flow very well. We have two young daughters (3 &5 year olds) who were also so happy with Helen and the rest of the staff at the lodge. One day we even got to leave the kids at Eco Lodge with Thembi (who was incredible too) which was wonderful so my hubby and I could have some down time which meant time at the spa for me. At Eco Lodge the kids got to jump on the trampoline, play, do artwork and they even got to go out looking for spoor and made plaster of paris paw prints to take home as a momento. We had Room 16-the last one but it wasn't too far a walk at all while being very seculed from other rooms. The room and amenities were perfect. I love the Africology shampoo/conditioner/soaps too...so natural and beautiful. The food was delicious every time. The weather was perfect. The pool was refreshing and warthogs and little buck were feeding on the grasses nearby. I can not fault anything here. The Waterberg Mountain range is SOOOOO gorgeous. They have walking safaris into the ravines here, so I am planning to come back one day for those. Thank you, thank you, thank you Marataba for an EXCELLENT stay. Well done on getting it all right. We can't wait to see you all again.

We had an amazing time last week at Marataba Safari Lodge. The family suites were luxurious and comfortable and the staff were all amazing. The safety protocols in camp were appreciated and we always felt safe while still being able to enjoy a relaxed safari experience. They really know how to ensure families on safari have a special time and we loved that there was the Eco Garden where the kids could be supervised and left to enjoy one of the many planned activities. Helen our guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable and we enjoyed all our time on safari with her. She was also very engaging with our kids which is important. We cannot wait to return again as a family.
