Amazing staff, beautiful country, great memories!!

Not gonna lie...my daughter and I were little hesitant to take this girl's trip together to El Salvador due to safety concerns. If you are like us and wondering if it is safe to travel to El Salvador as single women, I feel confident in saying that you are in good hands if you book your travel through AST.

From the moment we were picked up from the airport, until the last day in which we were dropped off, we did not have one bad experience or ever felt concerned about our safety. The staff at AST bent over backwards to ensure we experienced all the wonderful things this amazing country had to offer in safe safe and secure way.

My daughter and I had surfing lessons at sunrise, fine dining overlooking the ocean at sunset, home cooked meals from local families, and lots more that that I am not even thinking about!! Practically anything we could think to ask for was accommodated. We didn't want our vacation to ever end and we left the country with a longing to go back as soon as possible.

Special shout out to Juan our tour guide, Jorge the hotel manager, Javier our waiter, Allie and Will our chefs, and all the security and housekeeping staff.

El Salvador was not on my radar but saw an all-inclusive beginner surf deal at AST and grabbed it. Easiest vacation ever. Pickup from airport. 3 delicious meals a day (I only ate 2, was plenty). Excursion to waterfalls. Great surf instruction. It was super laid back and everyone was very accommodating. There is not much to do in La Libertad which was nice actually. Simple Central American town. Most tourists were Salvadorenos. Room right over the ocean- the sound of waves 24/7. so happy I went...

The best hotel in the area (Surf City). We came here for a destination wedding and the organizer made a mistake when booking. Jorge, the owner of AST Surf heard of the issue and took care of us. Plus his team set up a volcano tour, an ATV tour and surfing lessons. Oh and the food is amazing. Try the carpaccio and the pasta plate as both were yum! Oh, btw we stayed at 3 hotels on this trip and this was definitely the nicest one!

I am a beginner/intermediate surfer, so lets start there. If you are in this category, its still a great place to go with plenty of surf. The point may be a bit intimidating but other places are not. Room is a room, nothing fancy but it has all the amenities AND hot water. Restaurant, cannot believe how good the food is.
Service, well, that is where this place shines. Lupita and Carlos serving in the restaurant, Caesar cooking, awesome. William at the pool side bar (also helped my buddy get out of the water), great kid always smiling. Tamayo, our guide, whatever we wanted to do, we did. Remember though, they are on a bit of island time.
As far as surfing, its a rocky shoreline, pretty steep. Booties were a huge help. I caught anything from a couple foot shore break at La Paz to 4 to 5 foot rights there and Sunzal.
Sign up and Go! Cruz, Dave, Jorge, thanks for making this a trip I won't forget.

On the plus side: Good value at $100/d for two person accommodation (without the surfing package). You can rent a surf board for $10/d. The surfing is excellent - Punta Roca has great consistent waves at low tide. The restaurant is well appointed with great ocean views, excellent drinks and food, and friendly servers. Rooms are clean and nice - tile floors and a flat screen TV. Meals are approx $5 (cheap but not all that competitive to the local prices). Room for improvement: The included breakfast was sparse with just coffee, fruit and granola. The manager and surf instructor were not engaging hosts and, even though we offered to pay, they made it difficult to join the other guests (who had bought the surfing package) on surfing excursions to other beaches like El Zonte for example. Additionally the check out process was a disaster - an approx 40 minute process of calculating and re-calculating the final bill, several phone calls, and confusion with the credit card machine. As a word of caution - locals told us the town of La Libertad can be dangerous - we noticed that after dark along the boardwalk were always several of groups of youth who would loiter outside the hotel on the boardwalk at night (one night they were getting shaken down by the local police). Though we enjoyed our stay, I would not stay here again - I'd recommend possibly their other location at Las Flores or the hostels at El Zonte.

Just back from a fantastic week at AST Punta Flores and Punta Roca. Beautiful location, amazing people and great surf. Any anxiety I had about travelling to El Salvador was erased the moment Jorge picked me up from the airport. I felt safe and well looked after by Jorge and his team the entire time.

The Las Flores location was my favorite. It is more rustic than Punta Roca, but the view is spectacular – beautiful swaying palm trees, gorgeous sunrises. Clean, basic rooms and comfy beds. It’s a great place to switch off from the world. The Punta Roca hotel is busier and feels more modern – great rooms, located right on the beach, delicious fresh food, and friendly staff. I would strongly recommend going to both locations.

I’m a beginner surfer and didn’t surf that much, but the times I did go out the waves were fun, and the surf instructors were helpful. The trip to the waterfalls was also fantastic– you pass through a town called Juayua, which is really lovely, and full of color.

Whether you are looking to surf, explore, make friends, nap in a hammock, or drink beer watching the sunset AST has got you covered. I would go back in a heartbeat!

My boyfriend and I picked AST La Libertad because we wanted two things, surfing and adventure. Considering the name (AST = Adventure Sports Tour), we got exactly what we signed up for!

We were told ahead of time that El Salvador was dangerous and many people were very surprised that we picked it for our trip (we're 28/32 yr old honkeys). That said, AST made us feel completely safe and comfortable. We had a guide (Emilio) the entire trip who was local and super chill. He not only knew surf conditions at all times (boyfriend went out a couple times a day) but he brought us on many day trips to hike, tour, ride 4-wheelers through the coffee fields, swim in incredible waterfalls, etc. If we wanted to walk around La Libertad at night, Emilio escorted us for safe measure. They also had hotel security 24/7 so that was reassuring. We didn't participate in any nightlife activities since our exploration off-site was all chaperoned but we did have some fun at the hotel bar almost every night. The staff was awesome and played great music.

I'm not a super awesome surfer (I like to say I'm intermediate but many would call me a beginner) and Emilio was so patient with me - pushing me into waves when I needed it and telling exactly which ones to go for. It's important to have a local with you because as almost all surfers know, territorial locals are a universal problem. He was obviously a boss in the surf community there so it seemed like even when people wanted to tell me to scram, they kept their mouths shut. AST had a great selection of boards to rent as well. When I didn't want to surf or it was too heavy for me, I relaxed with a bucket of beers in a hammock or at the cafe with a book. Definitely not a bad alternative.

One word of advice - BEWARE SURFING AT HIGH TIDE. Or actually, I should say, BEWARE GETTING OUT OF THE WATER AT HIGH TIDE. It's called Punta Roca for a reason. If you want to get out of the water for any reason at high tide, you're going to be walking on pointy rocks. I paddled out from a nice sandy beach and almost drown getting out. It was very, very scary. I actually cried. Not AST's fault, of course. Just a warning...Especially for girls who have to concern themselves with the waves tearing off their swimsuits while they carry a board that takes both hands to carry (AMIRIGHT).

Ok, now back to AST. The room was great with an incredible balcony view of the ocean. It had all the amenities of a US hotel with the exception of a blow dryer. Very minor set back for my bangs but we got by just fine. The food was amazing as well! I was really surprised by what a huge selection of meals they offered. I was very very pleased.

Overall, a really great trip! Hoping to try Nicaragua AST next. :)

I stayed here for a week in August and it was fantastic. I've surfed only a little bit before and am very much a beginner still. I was looking for a surf camp that would allow me to get better without being too far above me. I booked one of the all-inclusive type packages that included accomodation, transfers, meals and a surf guide.

The hotel - Very clean and nice and a perfect location right on the water and close to the breaks. I stayed in the "owner's suite" and it was awesome - very spacious and had it's own balcony. The pool was fantastic as well. The staff were amazing - very attentive and obviously well trained. They could easily go work at a 5 star resort somewhere I think. Most did not speak much English (if any) and my Spanish is almost non-existent but I didn't have much trouble. Sometimes I would end up with more beer than I ordered but that's not really a problem...The food was very good and there was a decent selection so I never really got tired of anything. There were a few small issues with them forgetting to put out the pre-breakfast (at 5:30am before surfing) a couple days and then running out of things like bananas and Pilsener (the local beer) a couple times but nothing too big. I really liked the attention to the small things like getting handed a towel as soon as you got back from surfing or out of the pool, thick fluffy towels in your room and even real toilet paper! I hate when hotels cheap out on that! I did get a massage one day and it was very good. A little pricey - about the same as what I'd pay back home which seemed like a lot for down there. Pretty much the only thing to improve was that I was on the 1st floor and the Wifi was only available on the 2nd and 3rd floor. A wifi extender/booster would be a pretty cheap and easy way to solve this.

The Surf - the beach break right out front here is pretty rocky and at this time of year was a decent size (4-6' waves) - definitely not beginner beginner but more advanced beginner/easy intermediate I think. There were 2 days when the swell was really high and I got trashed pretty good but the other days were fine and I had the best rides I've ever had. I had more trouble paddling out and just getting in and out of the water due to the rocks and waves most days than I did surfing but it was still not what I would consider easy. I did walk down to Punta Roca to watch the "real" surfers and that was pretty cool to see. The water at this time was warm to hot! I couldn't believe how warm it was actually. The package was supposed to come with a surf guide for every day and my guide Tamayo was great. Super nice guy and gave me some great pointers. He ended up having to do a lot of airport transfers while I was there so I did surf alone a couple days but that wasn't too big of a deal since I didn't have to drive anywhere and there were usually other people in the water.

Other - the town is pretty quiet with not much to do but surf but the waterfront bars/restaurants were hopping on the Saturday night. I felt pretty safe walking around during the day and at night. The fish market on the pier was pretty cool and we also did a trip out to the waterfalls near Juayua which were well worth it.

I've been traveling to La Libertad pretty regularly since 2014 for surfing, and this is where I always stay. It's located right at the base of Punta Roca, which is the best wave in the country. First and foremost, we had some confusion with our booking through a 3rd party, but the hotel manager moved some things around to accommodate us at the last minute, which was amazing because he didn't have to. My friend and I purchased the 6night all inclusive surf tour package. It's such a sweet deal, because it takes all of the stress and responsibility of arranging all of the details and logistics of the trip. You get to focus completely on surfing! Our guide Emilio really made our trip. He was very knowledgeable, attentive, and was always focused on helping us sit in the right position and select good waves. In fact, without his local influence in the lineup, we would have not caught as many waves as we did. Our meals at the adjacent restaurant (Tsunami) were excellent! The menu is broad with variety, and everything from the cevieche to the hamburgers were delicious, and kind to our gringo guts. Make sure you request a tour of the Mayan ruins and the waterfalls! You will not be disappointed!

My friend and I booked this trip through theclymb. Jorge and Juan were great to work with, especially as we were new to surfing, and wanted to focus on other aspects of the trip like the volcano and Mayan ruins. Juan was awesome to hang out with and the perfect person to show us around their beautiful country. The hotel itself was clean and the staff hospitable, although most spoke limited English aside from Jorge and Juan. The view along the ocean was great, as well. We would definitely come back and recommend for others as 2 female travelers.
