Thank you to Edmundo, Marta, Jorge, and all of the other staff who work behind the scenes, for making my recent stay at Black Sheep Inn great. They made me feel welcome, answered questions, made suggestions for extra hikes, etc. Since I was traveling alone, I booked a dorm bed. The beds were spacious and comfortable, with extra blankets if needed, and had individual lights and privacy curtains. The shared bathroom was always clean. Everything is ecologically friendly. There is also a sauna and hot-tub, yoga studio, massage, small gym, a frisbee golf course, darts, board games, etc. The included vegetarian meals were delicious (using local organic produce), as were the home-made oatmeal cookies, banana bread, and brownies available throughout the day! The packed lunches each day were tasty and filling. The communal tables brought guests together at breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was available at 7:00 a.m. for those wanting an early start. In addition to hiking, there were a few things to do in the small village of Chugchilan. I visited the small Sunday market, as well as the church. There was a fellow playing a guitar while the congregation sung. It was enjoyable to listen to. I also visited with 3 generations of a family in the plaza, and other Ecuadoreans that I encountered in the street. I highly recommend staying at Black Sheep Inn, even if not hiking the Quilatoa Loop or alternate trails in the area. There are many places on the mountain property to simply hang out, relax, and enjoy the views.

We stayed here for 2 nights during our hike to the Quilotoa Lagoon. We were positively surprised about literally everything that the hostel offered us. The atmosphere and the love for the detail was just stunning and the food was delicious and local. There are several activities that can be done, but at the end the best thing to do is reading a book in one of the hammocks in the yoga studio whilst eating one of the oat-cookies. One of my best stays in a Hostel; and I was traveling for several months. Would definitely recommend it.

The black sheep inn is a precious little family run hostel. It is the perfect little mountain get away. We got a huge dinner and breakfast and a nice bagged lunch for our adventure filled days. It's also worth mentioning that the food is absolutely delicious and, it's included in the price of the stay. We were able to do some yoga in the yoga studio and got a nice little workout in at the home made gym. Edmundo was very accommodating and helped us plan our trek to Quilotoa. You'll be blown away by your stay at Black Sheep from the beautiful views to amazing staff we loved it here.

This is not a place if you're looking for a traditional luxury stay. However we loved the many quiet places where you could just hang out (amazing yoga room, great lookouts and just all sorts of quiet reading spots and more). The room had a wood stove for heating, which made for a lovely evening. And a really comfortable bed with a very functional bathroom. The showers were hot, and the composting toilets were absolutely no issue if you have concern. Some nice hikes from the hostel, in particular the hike to the crater. Would strongly recommend hiking from the hostel to the crater rather than the other way around. It's a bit harder, but it means the fantastic views happen at the end of the hike. Edmundo was a wonderful host always willing to help out. And the sauna and shallow hot tub is rustic but very enjoyable!

Wonderful hospitality, relaxing nature, and beautiful views. Black Sheep Inn is one of those places you stay where you receive 110% hospitality. They took care of us so well from beginning to end. We asked them for transport from our hotel near the Quito airport, and the driver Lucas was there on time (a little early even). He gave us a bit of a guided tour through the impressive deep canyon that you pass through on the “northern route” to the inn. When we arrived, Edmundo gave us a big welcome, offered us a beverage and snack, and took us up to our rooms. We stayed in the high (“arriba”) rooms, and there is a short trek up the hillside, but it’s worth the amazing views and peaceful position near a llama pasture. The room Arriba 1 has two double beds and room Arriba 4 has four beds positioned on lofts. Both rooms, each positioned on the ends of the building, have wood stoves and large en suite bathrooms with plentiful hot water. They provide kindling and wood just outside the rooms. There are Adirondack style chairs, chair swings, and a fire pit to allow you to enjoy the view of the valley and surrounding mountains in comfort. We had the upper area all to ourselves, so it felt like a private refuge, but there are only two other rooms there. We booked a guided tour of the Quilotoa Crater Lake, and it was worth every cent to be transported to the rim and to be guided along the rim and back down for the return trip in the truck. We’re in pretty good shape, but an uphill hike from the inn to the rim and back on our first day at 12K feet would have been tough. Edmundo is an excellent host and made us feel totally at home. We’re more the omnivore type, but the included vegetation meals were delicious and filling. It was also really nice to have snacks (cake and cookies) and hot coffee, chocolate, and tea available 24/7. I would describe the inn as “rustic luxury” — luxurious because they will take care of your every need and rustic because it’s a remote, natural environment where they don’t sterilize everything with chemicals like some chain hotels. Unfortunately we only could spend two nights there on this trip, but we would definitely go back another time and try other hikes. On the way out, family that had joined us at the inn drove us out through the “southern route,” which was an easier drive than the northern route, even though there was one detour around a damaged part of the road.

We stayed for two nights in Chugchillan as a base for our hike around Quilotoa. We really enjoyed our time at the black sheep in: we got a triple room with private shower, and it was very cosy and confortable. Additionally we really enjoyed the sauna and the cozy atmosphere of the common space (with the delicious complimentary cakes, coffee and the) after a long hike. But most of all we really appreciated the warmth and great advices from Edmon, which made our stay very special.

When we told people we were planning a trip to Ecuador, multiple friends told us we needed to go to the Black Sheep Inn and they were not wrong. The sauna and hot tub were just what we needed after 2 days of hiking. We spent an extra day here and went on a guided hike. Our guide - Segundo - was excellent and very patient with our thousands of questions about the plants we encountered and local farming practices. We stayed in one of the rooms with a private bathroom which was perfect for us. There was a woodfire stove for warmth and cozy vibes though we only needed it one of the nights. The family style dinner was delicious and it was very fun to meet other travelers and share tips and experiences over a hot meal.

This place connects you to nature in the heart of the Andes and us such a memorable experience. We came with our teenage kids and friends and we all rented the bunkhouse together. It was fun to be all bunked together. Although the bathroom is outside of the bunkhouse, it’s nearby and easily accessible with all the necessities (soap, running water, toilet paper-which in Ecuador outside the city is not always a given.) The bunkhouse has lights and warms blankets, comfy pillows, and was very clean. We loved showing up to food ready at the wooden table, family style. There were some in the group that were a little leery of a vegetarian only meal, but it was so hearty and delicious. Everyone was satisfied. The kitchen and hang out area was so fun to gather and we felt super comfortable there with unlimited homemade goods and purified water. The breakfast was great and delicious too. Edmundo and his staff made sure we had everything we needed and were very friendly, while at the same time giving us our space. It was also really fun to meet fellow travelers there. We highly recommend this experience and we will be back again.

We love this place! There are endless activities including the highest frisbee golf course in the world. The food is incredible and a heavy blankets make for a great night sleep. I am not a fan of vegetarian food and I was pleasantly surprised.
