Travelers' Choice
At the southern end of the Maldives, lies a rare oasis: Raffles Maldives Meradhoo. This uniquely idyllic resort brings the legendary service of Raffles, host to the well-travelled since 1887, to Gaafu Alifu, one of the world's largest and most remote natural atolls. Offering two distinctly luxurious experiences: a private island with white sands, a turquoise lagoon and lush greenery and an overwater enclave facing east and west to capture majestic sunrises and sunsets. Throughout, remarkably spacious accommodation with private pools offers profound privacy and comfort. Three restaurants serve BBQ prime cuts to exquisite Nikkei cuisine. Two bars serving tapas and crafted cocktails. From romantic retreats to havens of family time, each is served by Raffles Butlers. Yoga, fitness and the Raffles Spa promote well-being. Two private islands. One unique Raffles service. An experience like no other.

We checked into the hotel on 1.30 and were discriminated against and treated unfairly. 1. The hotel arranged for us to stay in Pier 23 room. This room was super noisy, smelled of gasoline, and had poor privacy. However, no one will be accommodated in the pier room during the off-season, but it is continuously arranged for Chinese people to stay during the peak season, which involves unfair treatment. We asked the hotel staff, and they lied to us and said that the room was not too noisy. 2. The rule is to check out at 12 o'clock, but the hotel unilaterally asked us to check out at 10 o'clock and change rooms. 3. The hotel knew about our honeymoon, but deliberately refused to provide us with honeymoon rights.

Hotel's Favorite
We all want our holidays to create lovely memories that will stay with us for ever and Raffles Maldives does just that. Beautiful views in all directions, lovely beaches, coral and marine life, stunning sunsets, crystal clear sea, blue skies much of the time but interupted every so often by refreshing rain, and no mosquitoes to interupt your enjoyment. This is a very well managed hotel where the small touches (like surprise birthday decorations in your villa or a detour on the way to the airport to see dolphins) come naturally, the service level is very high and the staff very friendly. The hotel has two seperate sections, the coral island 'mainland' and an over-water atol, and the fact that you need to take a water taxi between the two adds interest and variety. We stayed in an over water villa and loved it, spacious, very comfortable, amazing views. For what is a small resort the food is very good with a lot of variety, three different destinations, our favourite, the over-water Yuzu serving Nikkei food expertly prepared by chef Akira, Thari, a lovely looking restaurant on the main island serving food from around the world with a particularly good Maldivian fish curry and a great Nasi Goreng, and lastly the Firepit, open twice a week on the beach with a very posh BBQ. My wife has a special diet at the moment and this was very well catered for. There is a big selection of things to do, we had a great fun jet ski trip to an uninhabited island, and hours of wonderful snorkeling. The water sports centre is excellent. Or if you want you can just chill and drink great cocktails, my favourite the Raffles signature Sing Sling. A special thanks must go to our fantastic butler, Nattu who was always there for us and great at organising things, especially the small touches, to all the very friendly staff at Yuzu, Chef Akira, Shaffaf in charge of the front of house and the very friendly and professional Azeen. And of course the management team who run the hotel very professionally and seem to have sponsored a happy culture. Thanks for creating so many happy memories!

This was our first visit to Raffles in the Maldives. We chose it in the hope that the coral would be in a better state than in the North of the Maldives. We had a fantastic trip from start to finish. Both the transfer from Male to Meradhoo and the return transfer (both by sea plane) were effortless and quick on the ground. The flight itself takes 90 minutes and gives spectacular views of the Maldives. Our enormous over-water sunrise villa was beautiful and as requested, quiet. A major plus, was that Shafi always cleaned it while we were at breakfast or dinner which meant that we felt totally relaxed throughout our stay. Nattu, our butler, was brilliant. He respected our wish to have a quiet, chilled out holiday and instantly answered any query that we had and effortlessly sorted all our reservations. He booked us 2 superlative spa sessions and took us on 2 house reef snorkel guides, which then allowed us to snorkel safely whenever we felt like it. The house reef is thriving and we were thrilled to once again see beautiful shoals of fish, plenty of reef shark and even the odd turtle. There are myriad different corals and enough marine life to keep us very happy for the entire week. We loved our long leisurely breakfasts at both Thari and Yuzu and the vibe at the Long Bar. Nai and all the bar staff there couldn’t have been nicer and we spent many a happy hour gazing at the horizon at lunchtime or watching the sunset with a Singapore Sling. It is impossible to name all the staff, but everyone was great. In particular Kuralay at Thari and of course, Shane, (Food & Beverage Manager). We were very touched by his arranging a special Indian/Maldivian dinner for us and we have to say that the kulfi was the best we’ve ever tasted! In short, we are already dreaming of a return visit.

This is the second time I have visited Raffles and sixth time to the Maldives going since I was a child with my family so I’m well qualified to know this is a special resort, I came last year with my girlfriend as well and it was nothing short than the best time of our entire lives so as our second visit got closer we started to get slightly nervous it couldn’t live up to our previous visit. From the second we arrived those worries were alleviated entirely. We were greeted by the Resort Manager Yogeswaran as soon as we stepped out of the sea plane and it was like being greeted by a family member. We were then introduced to our butler Adi who I will come onto later. Let's start with the island, it's beyond postcard beautiful and every time you see it either from the arrival jetty, the beach or even just the interior of the island it's hard to believe that you are actually there and it's real. The reef is beautiful and much healthier than the majority of the islands in the Maldives now. The marine life is fantastic and you will regularly see baby sharks, turtles and rays not to mention all the fish. The rooms are incredibly spacious, we stayed in both the beach villa and the water villa and recommend doing both during your stay. The beach villas are incredibly private tucked away behind the beach with your own private walkway to the beach and the water villas has an incredible infinity pool and outdoor decking area. If you don’t want to do both and are trying to decide I would say if you want ultimate privacy and access to the beach go for the beach villa but if you want outdoor lounging area and incredible views go for the water villa. The spa is a must visit during any stay at Raffles, the girls there are not only incredibly talented but so sweet and kind. I definitely recommend the Raffles signature massage. The food is phenomenal, there are 3 restaurants, Thari is the main restaurant open for breakfast lunch and dinner, the breakfasts are great with tonnes of options, Thari in general has a lot of options whenever you dine there. The lunch is fantastic with huge portions, too huge for my European palate but as they said, its better to be generous. My personal favourites were anything Thai and the Mixed Arabic Grill. There is a new head chef since last year and we noticed significant improvements in the bread and pastries especially, the only thing at lunch that could really be improved is the pizza and with the new head chef being Italian it would be great to see maybe the addition of a woodfired pizza oven with a more traditional Italian pizza being offered. Dinner is incredible at Thari with everything being fantastic and you can’t really go wrong, just depends what you fancy that evening and even if nothing takes your fancy they always happily made me something off menu. Firepit is another restaurant open 3 days a week and has a new concept compared to last year, rather than an a la carte BBQ it’s a live cooking station Buffet which is much better, speaking and interacting with the chefs as they freshly prepare your food right in front of you is an amazing experience. Yuzu is the Japanese/Peruvian restaurant based at the over water villas, this is the only real criticism I have of the whole review, the starters are incredible, I loved the Sushi and all the other starter options however the mains were quite poor and also the menu options for the mains was limited with neither of us wanting anything on it. An example was the Tuna Tataki, which came as cooked Tuna with a side of Curried pasta. I really think Yuzu would benefit from a completely new approach and style, change it to a Robatayaki style restaurant would be my suggestion. The best thing at Raffles is the service, literally every single person couldn’t do enough and there are many people I need to mention: Adi – our butler really epitomised going above and beyond, from unpacking all our suitcases for us as soon as we arrived to appearing out of nowhere at perfect times to just make sure everything was ok and if anything could be done to improve our stay and keeping us informed as to what was going on and all the events and activities we could take part in to even sorting out a Badminton game against the Resort manager. On our last night the way he made our room was incredibly special Alfie – Really happy to call Alfie a friend, his joyous energy and fun nature came through in every interaction you will ever have with Alfie, we looked forward to seeing him everyday and learning a new Maldivian word or phrase he would teach us. Nothing was too much from sorting me out off menu dishes when I didn’t fancy anything on the menu to remembering all of our preferences and tailoring everything to our taste. We really hope to see him again when we return next year. Kuralay – Seeing Kuralay again warmed my heart as any interaction you ever have with Kuralay will, we knew her from last year and were delighted to see her again, she has the purest soul you will ever meet and the sweetest nature. Measy (I am really sorry for the spelling) – Her smile every day was beaming and we really enjoyed speaking to her, we hope to see her again next year. Shane – I honestly couldn’t be more grateful to Shane for how he treated us the entire stay, he really made us feel special every day and like it was his only mission to make sure we were happy and had a unique experience. From preparing us multiple off menu special meals (both of which were amazing and some of the best food of the holiday) to regularly making sure everything was up to standard and asking if there was anything he could do at all. Even bringing us a freshly chopped down coconut. Shane really made us feel like family and we cannot wait to see him again. Madura – We were ecstatic to see Madura again after last year, his cocktails have been spoken about in our house all year and yet again having a brand new cocktail every night tailored to our taste rather than off the menu is something special. Abdu – We really looked forward to seeing you at lunch every day and how you remembered all our preferences was really appreciated. Manku – The purest heart of anyone I have ever met, I can’t wait to see you again next year. We can't wait to return next year, it really feels like home and our intention is to return every year. Thank you to everyone at this property for how they treat us, we miss you all and consider you all family.

My boyfriend and I visited Raffles in March 2023 and had such an amazing time we re-booked for February 2024. Having loved it so much there was some element of nervousness whether it could actually be as good as we remembered having hyped it up in our minds for nearly a year. I am pleased to say that Raffles Merahdoo was just as good as it was the first time and in many ways was actually better. From the moment you leave arrivals at Male airport you are fully taken care of by the airport butlers who sort out every element of either the sea plane or domestic flight. We have now done both options and both are good. It depends when your flight arrives as to when the domestic flight or seaplane is scheduled but generally the seaplane will get you there slightly quicker as you won’t wait as long to leave. The seaplane takes 1 hour 40 mins compared to 1 hour on the domestic flight and a 15 minute boat ride. I know some people are sceptical as Raffles is slightly further than other resorts but it is 100% worth the journey every time. Our priorities when we come to the Maldives are island natural beauty, good snorkelling, nice rooms and good food. Raffles exceeds in all of these areas. A smaller natural island (10-15 mins to walk around the whole thing) and incredibly beautiful both internally and on the beach. The snorkelling is excellent with significantly more healthy corals than other resorts, there are lots and lots of fish, turtles, sharks and rays that you will regularly see snorkelling off the house reef. Your butler will happily take you snorkelling around the house reef & will help if you aren’t the most confident swimmer. The rooms at Raffles are very spacious and private. We stayed 50/50 in Sunset beach & sunset water villa both of which are great with the biggest beds you have ever seen. The beach villas have lovely private walkways directly to the beach and all rooms have large private pools. Our butler Adi made the transition between rooms very seamless. We appreciated the additional things provided in your rooms; a beach bag, flip flops and hats and we also love the aloe vera provided in the room. We really enjoyed the new addition of the paddle court and the trips away from the island particularly the new nurse shark excursion just off the island. The spa at Raffles is excellent, everyone is so lovely and kind and the treatments are excellent. Soukma (I hope I’ve spelt your name right) did all 3 of my massages and was wonderful every time. Finally I come to the food & service. The food is very good, there are 3 dining options Thari – the main A-la carte restaurant, Firepit – a buffet/chef station concept open 3 nights a week and Yuzu – a Japanese Peruvian restaurant at the over water villas. Since our visit last year the head chef has changed and there are notable improvements we found particularly in the bread and pastries. The menu at Thari is extensive with food from all different cuisines (our favourites were the Thai & Indian food but everything was very good). The Firepit had changed concept slightly from when we visited last year it is said to be a buffet but it isn’t your traditional buffet, instead it has multiple live chef cooking stations along with a selection of meats & fish that will be grilled fresh for you. We really enjoyed this as it was nice the food was freshly prepared in front of you and lovely to speak to the chefs you wouldn’t normally see. Our only area for improvement in the area of food (really only area overall) was the main dishes at Yuzu – they options weren’t really any dishes you’d particularly want to have and then when they came they weren’t particularly good versions of that dish. We have to say the starters at Yuzu were excellent of sushi, tempura prawns etc. We did voice this to the team when asked and they seemed aware of the issue so I assume this will improve in the near future. The service. Despite everything I have mentioned above being excellent the service is what really makes Raffles Merahdoo exceptional. From the second that we arrived we instantly felt like we were being welcomed home to a second family and the entire holiday it felt like everyone was doing everything they could to make us happy, this wasn’t in a forced way either, just genuinely nice people wanting to do all that they could. There are so many people who make Raffles Merahdoo special and deliver excellent service. As a smaller resort everyone greets you by name, no one ever asks you for your room number (even when you change rooms they just know it) and they all seem to remember who has still/sparkling water and quickly pick up on the type of food you like and recommend similar. That said, I’d like to mention some people in particular: Adi – Adi was our butler and was excellent from the moment we met him. He genuinely made us feel like nothing was too much trouble and quickly did anything that we asked, he kept us up to date with everything going on around the resort to see if we would be interested in taking part. He also would regularly check in on us to make sure everything was ok whenever he saw us. Not to mention the special surprise he left in our villa on our last night with rose petals and beautiful bath and note he left us. Alfie – we finished the holiday feeling like we’d gained a friend in Alfie. Obviously excellent on a personal level teaching us Maldivian and having a nice conversion but also excellent in being attentive, remembering who liked which water and that we liked olive oil with our bread rather than the standard butter, arranging off menu dishes for us with what we fancied more. He genuinely couldn’t have done anymore for us. Kuralay – We met Kuralay last year and were so happy to see her again. Kuralay is so kind and another great person to chat to at all meals whilst also getting the perfect balance of serving everything you’d want. Meazy – Meazy had such great energy and kindness, we enjoyed speaking to her everyday and also felt like she couldn’t do enough for you. Abdu – Abdu was lovely and again had the perfect balance of being really great to chat to and really kind as well as serving everything we wanted also going out of his way to remember our preferences for water & dishes. Manku – Manku had the kindest, purest heart and felt like he really just wanted to make us happy every time he saw us. Shane – The entire holiday it felt like Shane couldn’t do enough for us, the warmest welcome back was only the start. He arranged 2 off menu special meals for us which were some of our favourite meals of the holiday (one was Maldivian/Sri Lankan feast and the other a Thai/Indian feast). Shane was constantly checking we were happy and if there was anything maybe not quite how we’d optimally like it he would go out of his way to source it to be how we would. We were both so grateful for his kindness and the efforts he went to throughout the holiday. Madura – We met Madura last year as well and hadn’t expected to see him again this year but were very happy when we did. He makes the best cocktails which we loved so much. We told him our preferences for cocktails and he created something new every time all of which were amazing. Asif – We met Asif last year where he worked in Thari, disappointingly he now works behind the scenes in room service however whenever he saw us it was like seeing a friend. He is such an asset to the front end team we would love to see him back in Thari when we come back in future.
