Detailed Reviews
What an interesting place ! It dates back to Dutch colonial times and oozes history. Sadly it has not been maintained well and is , shall we say, a little grubby. Certainly not somewhere to linger but as a staging post on the way up to the Ijen crater I guess it works.
If someone put a bit of money into performing a deep clean and giving it a lick of paint then I think it could be quite nice though the sound insulation would remain a problem and the electrics would still bear some inspection.

Please read until the end! We stayed here as part of the 3d 2n tour from Yogyakarta. We didn't expect much of the hotel (we are backpackers) and the hotel met our low expectations. I knew not to shower there so got up extra early in the last place to shower! Don't eat there, 50k is a rip off for a meal in a dirty hotel for rice and a slice of watermelon. We went down the road and sat and ate with a lovely Indonesian family for 10k for an amazing plate of fried rice chicken or a steamed rice with a vegetable soup and some potato fritters. The food tasted amazing and we had a great time talking with the family. We went back to the hotel and the trouble started. We wanted to leave the hotel at 1am for the Ijen blue flames. We were happy to pay our driver a little more for the inconvenience. Our drivers boss told us that we had to pay 100k rupiah more 55k for entrance and 45k for the guide, the driver would not be receiving extra pay. We knew the entrance fee is 15k but they insisted we pay 55k to them. We said we didn't want a guide that we wanted to pay a miner to take us, but again they said no we had to pay them. We refused. They changed their tactic and now the 45k wasn't for the guide it's for the park ranger. There is no park ranger. We tried to outsmart them by saying we would agree to the price and we will pay the "ranger" and entrance fee when we got there. He said "not possible, you have to pay here" and we asked who the ranger was to which he then turned and pointed to the hotel owner finally admitting that we had to bribe them for us to be able to leave. We said no. We asked for a taxi number, obviously they refused to help. They laughed in our face and said if we don't pay we don't go! So we had no choice, this had been going on for three hours. The locals wouldn't take us because they were scared and they will have to live with problems. To put this in perspective they made us pay 500k...the miners make about 80k per day. The guide possibly the same, minimum wage is approx 30k per day. We were furious. Eventually we paid the fat cat and left at 1am. But our two friends who refused and left at the agreed time of 4am still had trouble. The driver refused to take them because they wanted to pay the entrance fee at Ijen. So they took their bags and eventually found a lift only to be stopped 10 mins down the road by the driver and forced to get out, the locals were scared and it wasn't fair on them. At the entrance the driver walked up with them and told the ticketing people to charge 55k. Unbelievable. This place is what is wrong with tourism, the hotel owner has a massive house, security guards, a pool and a Mitsubishi pick up. The locals have a modest house and a small wage. The miners are labour intensive and in danger. The guides trudge up and down showing guests around, ours was an ex miner with sulphur burns. WHY give your money to this greedy human for doing absolutely nothing?

I have read the review prior to my arrival to catimor homestay. To my surpise its better than i thought. There is a pool and a hot jacuzzi. The very basic need to crash the night before the hike to Ijen Crater.
There is a waterfall nearby which i had visit and its quite a view.I did that short hike in the evening which is nice.I was told by a friend whom i met en route that there are more places to visit near the homestay. Like a hot spring coffee plantation.
The rooms are consider clean just that the hot water from the bathroom might not be working. Good thing is that at least i get to shower.
The location is the best here!! It is nearest to Ijen Crater and you could get a few more hours of sleep which is very important prior to the hike to the crater. Why do i say that because i wanted to see the blue flame and i have to wake up at 1am and reach the crater at 2 am.
As for the prayers which some deem it as noise, It is their culture. And do respect that.

I don't know where to begin, the place is so amazing !!
Well if you like to carry your own sheets for your bed for example, this is your place !!
Speaking of the room it's very clean, nice decoration, a beautiful blue hanger above the bed, I'll do the same at home :)
The bathroom is totaly in the point of view of "do it yourself" well more like "clean it yourself" very funny, when I'll go back there I'll remember to get some bleach to even have more fun !!
Now the swimming pool, I think more guesthouses should do the same as them, cleaning an elephant in there for animal care is very important, infortunately they didn't get the time to clean everything up :// cheers guys :))
The jacuzzi is not really one, it looked more like a giant miso-soup (probably to feed the poor elephant)
For all the fans of Stephen King, there's a part of the gh that looks like the overlook in the shining ! Colonial house from the late 1800's it's totaly fine if you want to take a drink with Jack Nickelson !
The food's great, 65k roupies for a single menu, you just have to add a bit more for the beverages :)
The two slices of white bread and a boiled egg was the best breakfast I had for a long time ago !
The wifi has a very strong signal, everywhere in the gh, but you can't even send a message with whatsapp, probably a strategy of the management so that everyone have to speak to each other :)) Clever you !!
Very nice to you to wake us up at 3.30am !! For the departure at 4.30am ! I'm not old enough to put an alarm on, and your lovely peaceful melody of your fist on my door was way beter than my own music thanks *smoosh*
Well even better than that ! They picked up people at 1.30am just in front of our door, letting the minivan running so we could smell that nice smell of gasoline for one hour and a half while we were trying to sleep :))
I don't speak about the bugs :) not all the fun at once people :) (but take some tape even duct tape, it will always be usefull and funny :)) )
Enjoy your stay :)
(I want a "Hell Hotel" with Gordon Ramsey in this one please)

We had a one night stopover for our next day trip to Mount Ijen.
The only issue I had was the bedroom and toilet.
The bedroom was small, cramped and came with strips of wallpaper which was falling off. It was not an inviting sight and so we tried to stay outside at the common lounge, near the pool, etc till bedtime. Anyway, there is nothing much to do in the room except sleeping (no tv, toiletries, wardrobe, etc). We couldn't find any socket to charge our camera, phone, etc in the room.
The toilet was a nightmare when I tried to take a shower! The shower head was not working, i.e. water leaking and so I could never get any water to go to the shower head. To make things worst, the hot water heater didn't seem to work and the hot water ran out so quickly. I actually bathe in cold water and mind you that the climate was cold. The shower left me frustrated and really cold.
Other than that, the dinner, breakfast and free flow of hot drinking water and tea were ok. There was a jacuzzi and a pool which I saw some people using. The pools looked ok. We walked around the place/plantation but there were really nothing much to explore.
Was really glad that it was just a one night stay and I was really happy to pack to go the next morning. If given a choice, I don't think I would choose to return.

That's a shame that to reach the spectacular Ijen crater, you need to stay in this hotel, well.... Sort of... This "hotel" and Arabica homestay are the only two affordable and close hotels near the crater. Catimor has got very old rooms, dirty, with wall full of mould. Toilet is against all hygienic rules, awful. They really have lots of tourists coming from all over the world so they should provide better accommodations. I'm sure things won't change after this review, nobody from the homestay will read this text, but this is not the way to keep an hotel. Btw, the Ijen crater with its blue fires it's something amazing that will make you forget the dreadful homestay. Tips: bring your own bed linen and something warm for the night.

Stayed a night before a hike to Ijen Crater. Food price was slightly higher than usual. You may bring your own food. Sharing room for two was not awful albeit we did not get enough rest. Toilets were useable, don't expect too much. Its alright for a day stay. You should get a sight of the waterfall within 1.2km from the homestay. But don't stray too long in the jungle,go in a big crowd and return before sunset. Its worth the walk. The stream has high current,so its not advisable to bathe there. You may also opt for hot spring nearby homestay ;1km walk or within the homestay.

Super excited I arrived in Homestay Catimor, looking forward to days of walking, exploring by motorbike and try the local food in the mountains away from the city.
A little disappointed about the terrible state of the rooms/hotel, especially considering the price I paid but hey breakfast was included and i was close to waterfalls so I wouldnt let it ruin my stay.
But it was hard work, I asked for a tour to Kawah Ijen and they offered it for 500.000 rupia when i told them that was absurd they offered the budget version only transport for 300.000 rupia (please note I later did the organized Tour from Banyuwangi for 200.000 rupia incl guide, entrance, mask and transport)
I told the receptionist that i was traveling on a budget, he then told me he knew a place with really cheap food cause the food in the hotel was expensive, it was a WARUNG 100 meter from the hotel. So oke that made me feel a little bit better, I went there for lunch had a Mie Goreng and 2 tea and paid 15.000, 👍 great normal local price. Ofcourse in the evening i went again and saw the receptionist there, it was his place. All happy I ordered the same but when i wanted to pay with him he charged me double for everything!!!! He said it was a misstake in the afternoon I think he is just extremely greedy and knows there is only 1 place to go close to the hotel and thats his place.
I still loved the surrounding and stayed another day, even after the poor breakfast, they brought 2 slices of white bread stuck to eachother with a Tiny bit of jam wrapped in plastic thrown on the table, no fork/knife OR plate.
Time to explore by motorbike. I asked the price and they offered it for 150.000 RUPIA from 10.00 - 22:00 unbelievable disappointing... Ive NEVER been to a place where they charge you $11,50 for a motorbike in Asia!!!!! Even in Holland the daily price is lower.
That point I decided to give up and leave. I understand, everyone wants to make some money but it has to stay reasonable. People in Sempol are arrogant, unfriendly and greedy.
"AVOID" Sempol and especially "CATIMOR Homestay !!" and take a good cheap tour from Banyuwangi or Wonosori.

We stayed here only one night on our way to Ijen. This is a weird place. It is so old and worn that it's even hard to say if it's dirty or just forgot it's good times. It is not that bad for one night. What is amazing, is atmosphere. All the one night tourists on the way somewhere else sitting and talking at the courtyard make it feel like best backpacker hostel.
Don't try to avoid it. Leave any expectations and enjoy travel magic. It is not common on Java.

Good that we were there only one night. The room was very small and unpleasant. The bathroom dirty and disgusted. In the restaurant is only one meal nad it's huge. You cannot order the part of it, for example only a soup. The only advantage was hot water in the shower.
