Travelers' Choice
Constructed along the lines of the early 18C Cape Dutch bungalows, the Dutch House is a tastefully designed two-storey villa that also incorporates design elements from the colonial bungalows found in the south of the island. Set on a two-acre garden filled with fruit trees and flowering plants that attract many birds, it has been a highly-praised boutique property which encompasses a distinct local feel, with the use of antiques, art and soft furnishings that are locally sourced. The Dutch House offers well-appointed bedrooms, Sri Lankan cuisine and an informal and relaxing ambience, with 24 hour buttler service and a chef on site. The Dutch House can accommodate up to four guests and is ideal for couples, friends travelling together and families with children over the age of 10.

This hotel is quite unique. A beautiful 20C building in the Dutch colonial style, just two bedrooms - perched on a hill overlooking Bandarawela and the surrounding hills. We had the place to ourselves so it felt like a private villa with service to match - the staff (manager / cook / gardener) were fabulous and attentive. Our room was traditional but smart and clean - a separate TV/games room was a nice touch. The pool was not heated so not used - a solar panel would sort this? We stayed for two nights and had dinner which was good, the breakfast on the terrace was memorable - one slight oddity, the hotel only serves beer so we bought wine for the second evening (the manager generously went into town to get this). A brilliant, one-off venue and highly recommended

This was our favourite place in Sri Lanka. The house and grounds are just stunning and a delightful place to relax and unwind. Kannan looked after us exceptionally well and was so kind and hospitable. Nothing was too much trouble for him. The food was exceptional and we were lucky enough to watch the chef cooking one day and Kannan explained how he made each dish. We would recommend this house to anyone and would love to come back one day.

Our stay at Dutch House was one of the highlights of our travels in Sri Lanka. Kannan was the perfect generous and kind host. The property is charming with perfectly manicured gardens, superb food and hospitality. The bedrooms have generous proportions with good views and fitted with lovely antiques. We will be back in a few years' time. Thank you Kannan.

The hospitality that we were shown was incredible. Kanaan’s (the housekeeper) respectful, peaceful and caring nature will forever be one of the highlights of our Sri Lanka trip. The food was the best we have had in Sri Lanka (by quite some way!) and being foodies we just feel so spoilt to have these ‘taste bud’ memories that will be with us forever. The Dutch House is a lovely ‘home from home’ with beautiful gardens, views and classic decor but most of all we just feel lucky to have been looked after by you both. If we could give the Dutch House more than 10/10 we would. It’s a magical place created by magical staff.
