The Kinsterna Hotel is a Byzantine-era rural mansion, which was lovingly and superbly restored with great respect to its long history. Moreover, the natural setting and the activities that took place in the past on the premises have been revived, so the mansion to be self-sufficient. Today Kinsterna produces its own wine, extra virgin olive oil, olives, tsipouro (a Greek spirit), bread, marmalade, soap, etc. Tucked away in the folds of the lush hillside, with privileged views of the Medieval Castle’s Rock of Monemvasia in Southern Peloponnese and the endless blue of the Aegean, offers unique rooms, atmospheric suites and autonomous residences and blends magically into the surrounding vineyards, timeless olive groves, imposing eucalyptuses, lofty cypresses, and the gardens with fresh vegetables and herbs, within an estate of 22 acres. If visiting Monemvasia the question is whether to stay in the town or outside. We chose to stay 4 nights at Kinsterna which is a 15 minutes drive away and were very glad we did. We felt that you'd not want to spend more than one night, two max in the town. The town is a great day trip and was not too busy being latish in the season. It is quite a slog up to the upper town but well worth it.

On to the hotel, which is a stunning place. It is much bigger than expected with lots of rooms but all set out on a huge site with many spaces to sit quietly, including by the two pools. The place has been very carefully designed and modernised. We chose a premium residence which had a balcony and view of Monemvasia in the distance. Very comfortable room indeed. The breakfast was outstanding, all carefully served in a covid aware manner. The staff were all friendly especially the restaurant staff. The food in the evening was lovely, 'international' cuisine served on a balcony with sea views. My only comment was the lack of other alternatives if you didn't want such a lavish meal - the barbeque restaurant was closed, so we ate in the town opposite Monemvasia a couple of times.

One day we went to Simos beach on Elafonisos island, a short ferry ride from the mainland - gorgeous beach. Another day we spent just lounging around at Kinsterna, such a beautiful environment to do this in.

This was our second visit to Kinsterna after visiting last September (2019). After all our trips were cancelled during this summer due to Covid-19 we decided to roll the dice and try and get back out to Kinsterna for a week break at the end of August. The risk was certainly worth the reward

The location of the hotel is well placed for social isolation and the staff and service is impeccable. It is off the beaten track but any hotel which is a 2.30 hour drive from the closest airport is going to be but you will have a car to get you around and Monemvasia is a 10-15 minute drive. Communication with the reservations manager (Yiota) prior to our trip was great in that they extended the cancellation period to 48 hours as opposed to 1 week while we waited with baited breath with regards to quarantine restrictions. Fortunately we made it without any issues!

We only booked a double but were given E12 which had a really nice outdoor space for an evening chill and it was nice and quiet. The breakfast, as always was fantastic and I really liked the personal server approach to navigate the covid risks. We really got to know the staff well and Stavros at breakfast and Leonidis at the pool bar were stand out for us. But ALL the staff work so hard, 7 days a week for months and are so passionate about Kinsterna. The food and service at the hotel restaurants are all excellent and we have eaten at them all. Great cocktails too in the evening over looking the pool and estate. It really is a special getaway from everything that is going on.

What I really love is the sustainability and eco nature of the hotel. You are sitting on your sun lounger, at the infinity pool looking out to Agean sea, smelling the fragrances of the limes, lemons, quince, herbs of the estate whilst drinking and bathing in the natural spring water that runs through the pool and looking at the vineyards and olive groves of the wine and olive oil which you had for lunch. We were walking to the car to go out one night and the gardener was picking fruit from the trees and gave me a pear from the tree which tasted like candy. It really is an all encompassing experience! Not to mention the weather which seems like an endless summer in the Peloponnese.

Besides the hotel Monemvasia is a lovely town which we went to most nights for dinner or drinks. Highly recommend Malvaisa cafe for an evening beer with a great view in the evening. To Kanoni and Voltes are great for food but there are loads of cool places to eat and drink on the Rock.

Day trips wise the only place we went to was Elafonisos. Google Simos beach and you will see why you need to go here. We also watched the sunset with mainly local Greeks across the island at Panagia beach so recommend that too if you can make it a full day.

All in all an amazing place to get away and the only place that has twisted us to go back twice (maybe, hopefully, more!).

This hotel is a tranquil paradise, hidden in the hills of Greece. This beautifully restored property just exhales relaxation. The grounds are bountiful, with their own vines, olive groves, vegetables and orchards. From arrival the staff could not have made us more welcome nor have been more helpful. We stayed in one of the newer rooms next to the property - very spacious with a huge comfy bed and balcony overlooking the grounds over to the sea. The bathroom had all amenities and a great power shower. We used the adults pool, some of which is fresh water from the spring just above the hotel. The spa isn't huge but the massage was the best I've ever had. Breakfast has good options and the food highlights were the different nights the hotel puts on - the 7 course tasting menu with wine was v.good and the location incredible. Great range of activities led by the ever helpful Panos - and very much enjoyed learning more about Greek wine and tasting some produced by Kinsterna. The hotel is owned by a family and their passion can shows in every element of the property and service.

Although the location and the rooms are really great, the breakfast is exceptional, the activities that are organized on a daily basis are creating a nice experience keeping you in the hotel... there is a big “BUT”: the reception service is poor, the restaurant menu is very limited & we had a very dirty room!!! Reception: We arrived a rainy day, two couples with two babies, after 4 hours trip, and we found a long queue of people in the reception trying to check out. Nobody said hello, nobody asked to carry our luggage (although the hotel owns golf carts), nobody offered a welcome drink or a place to sit while waiting for over half an hour. We left our luggage in the room and moved straight ahead to the restaurant for lunch. From a very limited menu we were informed from the waitress that there was no fava, octopus, burger and salmon. There were just three options from the main dishes. Room: Going back to the room, we found food leftovers from the previous guests (both in the bathroom and the kitchen), dust on the furniture, and the floor was really dirty- it was obvious that no vacuum was done for many days/stays). We informed the receptionist and even after that comment and the visit of house keeping, the room was still dirty!!! They removed the leftovers, but the dust was still there. Moreover the mattress was leaning towards one side, and the only thing that they did so to fix it was to turn it the other way round. We decided to leave a day earlier than planned, due to weather conditions, and although they should charge us for half night, they did not due to the bad cleaning experience that we had. This was of course a good point and showed a really good will, but the actual still says that for four days we were staying in a dirty room.

This hotel is set on a beautifully landscaped hillside which has a distant view of Monemvasia from the top levels. There are two lovely swimming pools and the landscaping in the gardens is fabulous although, disappointingly, the opposite hillside looked like a wall of red mud. Hopefully, by next season the ground will be covered and it will provide a nicer outlook.

Apparently there are 3 restaurants here, although only one was open during our stay in early October. It was billed as a fine dining restaurant in the evenings but we found the food, while prettily presented, was very average with dry chicken and a tiny red mullet on a basic salad bed of lettuce and tomato. The salads offered on the lunchtime menu were much better and breakfast was excellent. Also, all of the waiting stuff were completely delightful, unlike the receptionist who was supercilious and reacted to any request as if we were being really difficult.

We stayed in a Byzantium suite which was like a vaulted tunnel, very dark with just four tiny Windows set into the ceiling. We had to have all of the lights on whenever we were in the room although that was nice and cool on a hot day. The bathroom was fabulous, old terracotta colored marble floors and walls and the shower was very good.

Despite the size of the room, the bed was only a queen which had a very soft mattress topper which we felt made it uncomfortable and while the pillows at first sight seemed nice and fat, in fact they squished down to nothing. The WiFi was terrible, which isn't really acceptable in a hotel of this standard. It took us over an hour, roaming around the hotel looking for signal to send one email Two other things to note - despite no price list on display the mini bar is not complementary and the hotel is some way out of monemvasia and a car is needed to go anywhere.

Dear Lazzagear, First and foremost, we would like to thank you for your feedback following your recent experience at Kinsterna Hotel. Regarding the food, probably there was a failure. We would appreciate it If you could inform us on spot, so as to proceed to a replacement. As for the WiFi, our company has invested significant amount of money to improve this service. Unfortunately, some technical issues are only related to the provider. However, we are still working constantly on this. Kinsternas΄ staff receives mostly positive reviews and their training is continuous. However, we take into consideration your comment and will proceed accordingly. We all hope to have the pleasure to welcome you back at Kinsterna in the future. Best Regards, Prodromos Kesisoglou General Manager

This is a wonderful, well-run hotel, offering a relaxing and authentic experience in one of the more remote parts of mainland Greece. Staff go to every length to make everyone feel welcome. Stavros and Emelia were particularly helpful during our stay and shared their knowledge of the history of the hotel and the local area.

Rooms are very comfortable with each being different in outlook and characteristics. We were very fortunate to be upgraded to a Kynsterna suite so that we had a great view of the sea, estate and in the distance Monemvasia - this made our stay particularly memorable. I'd highly recommend these rooms.

The estate and terraced gardens means there are plenty of little spaces to escape to. The pool is a delight being spring fed, and the signature lemonade from the pool bar is not to be missed. Food in each of the three restaurants is fantastic, making use of produce grown on the estate and the cocktails from the terrace are amazing (and there is now even a new one named after me - Elizabeth!)

I can absolutely see why those living in Athens escape here at weekends, (when the hotel does get busier) and others say they return year after year. I hope we will also return soon.

Our 8th time here at this beautiful unspoilt spot of the peloponnese region.

We feel extremely lucky to have been able to escape the UK this year to come here. We did have our concerns about coming abroad due to Covid but we have felt extremely safe here both at the hotel and when visiting the surrounding areas.

As ever, the staff in the hotel have looked after us well with complimentary drinks on arrival and a wonderful private speed boat trip to Elafonisos, organised by the hotel with a fabulous skipper who was extremely knowledgable and a fantastic ambassador for the hotel. We had the most perfect day swimming in the crystal clear sea, snorkelling spotting many fish, seeing caves and graves from the hidden Pavlopetri.

We had the most delicious lunch in the town itself and then more swimming. Just beautiful.

We ate mostly in Monemvasia near the old town which we just love. Matuola was one of our favourite restaurants but we did try and loved others this year.

We stayed in room 43 which had an en-suite bedroom
With a separate room with sofa bed and bathroom for our daughter. This was ideal for us. We would like to try some
Of the other rooms in our future stays here.

It is with a heavy heart that we leave Kinsterna this year especially with not knowing what the UK will be like over the coming
Months but we feel
Very lucky to have got here safely and leave feeling that we have made the most of the beautiful sunshine and kind welcome we received at Kinsterna again. Thank you. X

Overview: Amazing 5* stay in an authentic Greek resort. Really could not have been better. The resort is amazingly beautiful, food is delicious, every amenity you could want while close to Monemvasia, but still authentically greek.

Details:

Stayed two nights here in late August 2021 with my wife and two kids (aged 1 & 5). Took the scenic drive from Nafplio through the mountains arriving in the early evening (5-6pm). Was met in the parking lot by someone with a golf cart who helped us with our luggage and got us checked in.

We considered staying in the Kastro but elected to stay here because 1) the hotel look amazing 2) we like having access to a kids pool 3) We could get a room with more space than the options I saw from the hotels in the Kastro. We stayed in the Kinsterna Suite which comes with a big bed and a double sofa bed which was great for the four of us.

Everything at the hotel is top notch. You have all the amenities you can wish for, but the resort still feels rustic, cozy, and not too big. The resort is amazingly beautiful, in the morning, in the afternoon, and hauntingly beautiful at night. I think this may be the prettiest hotel i have ever stayed at. Breakfast was included with our reservation and was the best we had in Greece. The cured meats, cheese, bread, and jams were particularly delicious (the cured meat melts in your mouth!). There is also a working farm on the property so you can see lambs and donkeys walking up an down the hills as you eat breakfast. Not to mention the cats.

Regret not having dinner here as we saw people having an amazing dinner in a garden one of the nights. Would 100% find an excuse to stay here again if we were ever in the Peloponnese.

For comparison purposes, we stayed in the Westin Costa Navarino resort after this and thought this was much much better. The Westin Resort is just way too big, not authentically Greek (no cats!!!), and the breakfast is lower quality in my opinion. The Westin Resort is also just not as pretty.

This hotel is a beautiful estate. No cost has been spared to transform this into a wonderful hotel in the midst of the gardens. My room was wonderful as well, a great mixture of old and new. Two great pools, activities, it has everything you expect from a great resort.
The only problem I had is that one evening I had a beer with my dinner and they charged me 12 euro for that. I totally understand that a premium location comes with a surcharge on food and drinks. But if a glass of wine is 6 euro then a simple national beer (alfa, 30 cl) should not be 12 euro. I felt kind of cheated by that. Two days later I had the same beer in a restaurant in Nafplio and paid 2.50 euro, five times less!

This is the second time we visit the Kinsterna Hotel, a fabulous byzantin mansion loaded with history, surrounded by a wonderful and generous nature, a beautiful and deep view at the sea and nice and friendly yet professional staff. We like to rest here. And taste a food that is beyond description.
But this is the first time I happened to visit the SPA and just felt I need to share my experience.
The Kinsterna SPA is a very peaceful and special place. One can easily feel in a place outside of time.
Then there is Lila, the sweetest and the most gentle beautiful lady and soul that makes your experience a very special moment of your trip!
She welcomes you with her heart open and her smile that you can read in her eyes( because Lila is very careful and of course she wears a mask). Lila drives you through the spa offers and advises you. And you just know she talks out of passion more than out of how much she would make you consume. Then here you come to your appointment and you feel like she is welcoming you to her house like you are a very special guest. Then she guides you through safety protocoles and you can see all the effort deployed and that everything is professionally under control. Then she makes you relax and Genuinely take care of you. And it just made me feel perfectly good. Products and protocoles are of great quality and you can feel and see the effect immediately. I have tried two : one for deep moisture of the face and one for tired legs. And both were just great.
Lila is highly qualified professional with both a therapist and a cosmetics diplomas and you can see she understands what you need and shares her knowledge with passion, care and generosity.
So I loved everything about the experience: both the result and the energy.
A million of thank you Lila and thank you Kinsterna Hotel! Keep up the wonderful work and the passion (it s a rare treasure) and hope to see you soon!

Hello murphyhc I suggest that it would be better if you ask the hotel for more details on activities. In general the location is a spring- summer destination meaning that a lot of businesses are closed, in contrast with summer. Almost 2/3 of the road is highway with natural beauties and monuments. Kinsterna and monemvasia is an excellent choice.

We drove from the other direction, Kalamata , though the first part of the route is the same. One option for you is to have the hotel transfer you from Athens airport, then rent a car locally, esp if you are jet lagged. Kinsterna hotel is unbelievably helpful so just ask them. However if you get a rental car at Athens, then you could stop at Epidaurus on the way. When you rent a car, highly recommend taking out ALL the insurance to cover all eventualities. We've driven a lot in Europe and USA and Greek mountain roads are something else. Motorways are fine. No idea about license etc, best ask Kinsterna or rental company. Have a wonderful time

Dear Eabs_10, Fisrt of all we would like to thank you for your interest in Kinsterna Hotel. Referring to the airport, the nearest to land is the Kalamata International Airport (KLX) which is located 160 km [99.5 miles] from the Kinsterna. However, the flights are limited and most important the time it takes to drive from KLX to Monemvasia due to the lack of highways is the same as with driving from the Athens International Airport (ATH) located 335 km [208 miles] from the Kinsterna. Given the above factors we strongly suggest liaising with the ATH airport. We hope we will soon have the opportunity to welcome you in our mansion and offer you an exceptional experience of stay! Should you need any other information please do not hesitate to contact us again. Best Regards, Kinsterna Hotel
