The house used to be a hostel. It was the right size for our group. There was 30 of us including teens & toddlers. Plenty beds for all. Most rooms ensuite. Kitchen was full & complete with appliances & utensils. The house itself was clean but dated. There was a bit of musty smell when we first came but eased up when we opened the windows, maybe due to house not being opened till we came. Some toilets & shower rooms needs updating. Electric was included in the fee. Owner was very friendly and replied to our queries thru email leading to our check in date. We stayed for 2nights.

Clare's Rock Hostel is a welcoming place to stay in the Burren. Our double room also had two set of bunks beds which would be good for a family. Pros: The owner Pat is very friendly and more than happy to assist. Cons: Button in shower needs to be pressed every 30 seconds to continue, water has regulated temperature which is only luke warm and the rooms are not soundproof (we could hear the conversation from the kitchen below).

This was my second stay in this hostel, stayed there a couple of years ago and decided to come back to this place when visiting the Burren again. What I like about this place is the location literally in the middle of nowhere surrounded by amazing scenery, the drive to the place is even enjoyable.
If you like nature and quietness I will recommend to stay here. The owner, Pat, is such a friendly and hospitable man, one of those people that makes me love Ireland. Kitchen facilities are very good for a hostel. Rooms and bathrooms are clean. There is a pub next door and the town of Ballyvaughan with shops etc. is not more than 15-20 mins away by car.

Just back from a ruined weekend in the burren.. as there were 8 adults and 5 kids away for the weekend we checked in to the clare rock hostel at 5 pm to be greeted by the owner listing out rules and regulations about our stay.. he started out by telling us to keep the communal area clean all the while there were un emptied bins from the previous night (s) .. he returned within 2 hours advising that we all had to be in bed by 1030 as there were "other" important guests staying .. repeated issuing warnings about no alcohol even though there was a group of adults and children from another group drinking cans at the bbq area.. i ended up just avoiding the place and just slept there and left as swiftly and quietly as i could.. there are plenty of other welcoming hostels in the region... avoid at your peril..

We booked this place thinking it was a Bed and Breakfast. Well, you have brekfast, if you make one for yourself (there's a kitchen), but bring the ingredients along, too!
There's no noise insulation whatsoever, meaning that you will not be able to sleep until midnight, because you'll hear EVERYTHING that goes on around, including the conversation. Prepare for some brief wake-ups during the night, when people go to the toilet (this switches on the ventillator as well) and finally wake up at 6 am, when people in the other rooms start to come around.
In the bathroom there are no taps, just buttons, so you get water for 30 seconds and then you have to press again (supposed to be eco-friendly...). You cannot select shower temperature, it is given. Separate hot and cold taps at the sink (as usual. Seriously, someone, please explain them that mixed taps have been invented for decades!)
My worst experience in Ireland as to accomodation:(

This hostel is in the middle of nowhere and it's the only one in the burren so I had to stay there it turned out to be a really bad night weather-wise! The 6 bed dorm was very sparse, there were no sockets in this room, no heating on at all! For 12 people upstairs there was one toilet and one shower! I found it a dreary place to stay and it felt like I was there for nearly 3!! There was a dryer we couldn't use for wet gear and some kind of dehumidufer that was positioned in a corner of the landing where string was strung across the bannisters it took all night to dry my clothes!!! I wouldn't recommend this hostel but if u really have to don't expect too much!!

Accommodation average. I would neither return or recommend. as we sat with our children in the communal sitting room, we were told by the owner that he wanted lights out by 10:30, and he wanted us all in bed as he had "important" people staying. (while pointing to upstars) he reminded us that there was no alcohol allowed on the premises, this I could've accepted if, on visiting the games room I hadn't passed another group partaking in a BBQ, while drinking cans of alcohol!!

Beautifully located. Nice building. Staff be due nice and helpful. But you can see that details are missing like no lamp on your night table, no closet for clothes, sugar in the kitchen straight from the paper bag. The bathroom is not for those who like to have it clean as a whistle. But there was always warm water. Breakfast means bread, butter and jam, cereal, milk, coffee, tea and self-service. WiFi works fine in the room. To sum up: decent but don't expect it to be anything more then a mountain hostel.

Wow. Best hostel of my life, and I'm 62 so I've seen a few. Pat, the owner/operator is a true gem. The hostel is new, spacious, warm. The rooms are clean, with en suite and hot water supplied by solar heating, soon to be augmented by a wind turbine. The kitchen is huge, better equipped than some restaurants, and Pat supplies cereal, milk, jam and, if you're lucky, some of his own home baked bread. There is an excellent reading/TV room and internet is available. There is even an outside chess patio with full sized pieces. It is centrally located in the Burren. Hint: Get the Burren Walking Trails Pamphlet from any tourist Info shop
