Lucky Bug is more than your average B&B. The spotless rooms with bath are in a building overlooking a small lake amid luscious foliage and totally separate from the owners home. Looking across the small lake you will see the restaurant where you will enjoy a magnificent breakfast that Monika prepares for you. The gift shop beside the restaurant area is full of unique (in a good way) items all made in Costa Rica (I got almost all my gift shopping finished here). If you are lucky, Ian, Monika’s grandson will take you on a jungle tour. My husband and I sat in the gazebo at lakeside and enjoyed the total serenity… wishing we had found Lucky Bug earlier in our travels. Thank you Monika and Rod for sharing this magical place!

Thanks so much for your great review. We love hearing how people perceive our little slice of heaven. We have also heard many comments about how they come from busier areas and appreciate the tranquility we offer while being close to the main road. We have listened to our guests and now offer dinners at our restaurant if they do not want to drive to town to any of the other restaurants close by. It has been good for us because we enjoy it when our guests are happy, and they seem to be after they drive so far to get to us and are offered a great meal at our Restaurante Caballo Negro. (a shameless plug for the restaurant._ :) And yes, Ian is a good talker and enjoys going back in the forest behind our rooms and using his machete. He has learned a lot and is very amicable. Please come and see us the next time you are in the area. Pura Vida

We’ve stopped at Lucky Bug for lunch and shopping several times over the past 15 years. Finally, we were able to stay for 2 nights at Monika & Rob’s beautifully charming B & B. The room was extremely spacious & comfortable for the 3 of us. There are so many quaint, local touches throughout the unit, including Monika’s homemade soaps, of which we bought several. She cooks & Rob serves the most delicious, fresh breakfasts, making something different every day. You must try her homemade jams! Amazing! The property around the restaurant & rooms is full of different varieties of plants & flowers & the building where the rooms are located, backs right up to the forest. You’ll want to take more pictures than you can ever go through! Do yourself a favor and make it a point to stay there as a place to view the Arenal volcano or just to relax in between partaking in adventures like ziplining, kicking, rafting or just enjoying the beautiful nature of Costa Rica.

Was greeted by Katherine and Sabrina, two of triplet daughters, raised on this amazing property. It is obvious the place has grown out of love over decades.
At the roadside, is their restaurant with open-air tables on the back, teeming with hummingbirds, overlooking the main house, guests building, pond, and beautiful gardens. I saw a pair of wild Keel-billed toucans (Katherine? Sabrina? told me type).
Also here, is a little gallery of local artists' works, including paintings by the third triplet, Alexandra, one of which I purchased.
I was given a second floor room in the guesthouse at the other end of the property, with floor to ceiling windows out to a balcony. The view over the property was equally stunning: trees, flowers, pond, mushroom lanterns, the jungle along one side.
There are 4 rooms on this floor, all large and decorated in similar light, airy tropical style. Mine was the 'Butterfly Room'. Comfortable king bed, long luggage bench at its foot, a roomy shower, with lots of hot water, in prettily decorated washroom and a little service area with hangers and shelves, a small fridge and coffee maker.

Delicious breakfast of eggs (cooked differently each day, if you stay more than one night:), fruit, toast, homemade jam, fresh mango juice and, of course, steaming Costa Rican coffee.

Girls were very helpful finding me the right place and time for a zip-lining adventure, afterall, they grew up here!

Met mother, Monika, and Rob my second day. Also, very kind and helpful. Monika walked me through the gallery and pointed out most interesting items. When I went out in the afternoon, they were hosting a local's birthday party, another good sign.

Very reasonably priced. Super comfortable. Warm and welcoming. Stayed 3 nights and hope for more in the future. A slice of paradise.

And she carries unique items in the gallery that other places do not carry. And the longer you stay, the more different items you get for breakfast. Although we didn't stay a night at the Lucky Bug we were there almost every day for a meal and a walk around the lagoon. The family who own it are absolutely wonderful, the food incredible (and very reasonably priced), the birds put on a show for us every visit, and the lagoon area bordering on the jungle was one of our favourite spots in Costa Rica. The gift shop (many items from which are now gracing our house back in Canada :( ) had a wonderful selection of authentic Costa Rican gifts and crafts - items we did not see anywhere else. We cannot recommend this place highly enough and have already decided to come back and actually stay at the Bed and Breakfast next year.

Lucky Bug was a life saver! My family had our Airbnb broken in to and needed a place to stay the night last minute. The owners were more than accommodating, they made us feel safe and welcome and made our last night in Costa Rica the dream we thought it would be. The rooms are lovely and feel very private, just like a hotel room, because you have your own private bathroom. The property was stunning and the breakfast was delicious! Their little pup is the cutest ever and having him hang around during breakfast along with the hummingbirds was a great way to start the day. I only wish we could have had more time to spend there. Highly recommend!

Thanks so much for your nice review. We were so glad to be of help when you absolutely needed it. We wish it was under different circumstances, but we like to think our private parking lot near the rooms is about 100 meters andw gives people a more secure feeling than other places. Yes, Bruno is our tough watch dog...:). He greets everyone who comes to the restaurant and he loves people, both big and small. Monika and Robert are the most gracious hosts. We have stayed and dined here on multiple occasions. The impeccable attention to detail makes one’s visit unforgettable! The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated with a view of the lake. The jungle gardens are a joy to stroll through. The Caballo Negro Restaurant is a WoW! If you’re craving an American style breakfast, with killer hash browns, Monika has got you! Robert also makes a mean cappuccino. And breakfast is included with your stay! Evening dinners are equally fabulous with many schnitzel and pasta options. Don’t miss the huge salads and the Rum Balls for dessert! The Lucky Bug Gallery is the place where you’ll find unique, locally handmade gifts and souvenirs. After seeing the same mass-produced offerings in every Costa Rican gift shop, this gallery is where I’ve always found my best treasures!

Hola, Thanks so much for your nice review. We enjoy your company, both at our rooms and also at Restaurante Caballo Negro. Monika takes care to put her love into all the decorations, and from what everyone tells us, it shows. Monika's potatoes are know far and wide, and they are truly addictive, and so glad you share my love of them. As for my Barista skills,...I am glad you enjoy my cappuccinos. Now that we are open most nights for dinners, it has been well-received, so we will continue as long as our guests request us to stay open. And we can't seem to keep the rum balls here. People love those and the German Apple Strudel the best. Monika has been in Costa Rica for over 24 years and has built a good relationship with many artists throughout the country, so she only sells pieces created in Costa Rica and does not sell products that are normally sold in souvenir shops We hope you come and stay with us again in the future. Pura Vida,

We felt like we have been made part of the family at Lucky Bug. The hosts were welcoming, made sure we had everything we needed, and shared many laughs and stories with us. Just what we needed during this stressful times.

The room was clean, comfortable, and spacious. Loved the balcony. And the food! We sure did not go away hungry! Make sure you save some room for STRUDEL!

Perfect for relaxing and exploring the area while avoiding the crowds of Arenal.

The accommodation is perfect for a peaceful getaway amongst the birds, flowers , butterflies and trees. It even has a little lake to enjoy kayaking, rowing, fishing or swimming. You can sit in the gazebo and read a book or snooze.. There is a gas fire pit for rainy days or a cool evening. The grounds are a wonder of plants and trees.
The breakfast is to die for and will fortify you for a busy day. THe r Themed rooms themselves are spacious, spotless and well appointed .Your hosts Monika and Rob friendly and welcoming. This place is a real gem.

We stayed at the Lucky Bug for 4 nights. We first stopped for a drink on our travels in 2013, and loved it so much we decided to stay in the B&B this time. Monika and Rob, together with Katherine, Colin, the dog and 2 cats are the best hosts we've ever experienced. We stayed in the Frog room, which was lovely, and had a lovely view of the Lucky Bug's lake. The rooms were funky (great decoration & colours), comfortable and immaculate. The food in Cabello Negro was lovely - we had breakfast and dinner each day, accompanied by lovely drinks and perfect hospitality and fantastic conversation! Lots of lovely birds (especially the humming birds which are right next to you on the restaurant balcony). Rob sorted out our itinerary for us, which made everything very easy indeed! We bought a some gifts from the fantastic shop too!

We'll be back!

Thanks so much for the nice review. We try to make everyone feel at home here, and glad we accomplished that with you guys. We enjoyed having you here and hope that you come back and see us. We have had many comments verbally about our birds. One group of "birders" went on an early bird watching hike at another place and when they returned they told us we had more birds than on the hike. And although we are not official birders, we never get tired of watching them and trying to look for new ones we have not seen before, or sometimes never heard before. Please come back and see us again in the future. Pura Vida

We had a great time staying at Lucky bug, the gardens are wonderful and stocked with loads of plants you won't see elsewhere.
The rooms are comfortable and quirkily decorated, with the frog and butterfly rooms having lovely views of their lake.
Monika and Rob served great evening meals for us; we were especially grateful as they kindly stayed open until we finally arrived on our first night.
We went fishing on the lake, with only a handmade hook and a cork as a float, but still managed to catch a fair number of fish, ideal entertainment for inexperienced fishermen.
Breakfast was great and accompanied by a myriad of hummingbirds.
Highly recommended

The price is the same. We do not have any dairy products as normal fare in our breakfasts. We usually have eggs, toast and lots of fruit. If you would like a fruit plate, that is fine.

February was very warm this year as opposed to last year. The beaches are normally hot, just different stages of hot at the beaches. Last year we had more rain than this year in both January and February. Monteverde is usually cooler than here in Nuevo Arenal. You will have a good time regardless.

Yes, it is several miles from the nearest small town (nuevo fortuna) and an hour from la fortuna. Nice refuge (quiet) place if you want to be absorbed by nature. I do recall seeing a few cabs in the area. Near the lake. Several excellent restaurants. I have been there multiple times (with my car)
