I promised our U.S. friends who will be traveling to Costa Rica that I would leave a day by day review with out being to long winded about Donna Rosa B&B. We would give twelve stars if we could. Day one.....arrived in a down pour four hours late (at least) after getting through customs, picking up our car rental, driving up Route 142 in the rain and dark. Google maps said "your destination is on the left". Nothing there!! Looked to the right and with their front door open we heard "Dominic...Ruth.. you're here" (how did Carlos and Werner know?). They were waiting by the open, well lit door with smiles. "Pull under the carport and we will help with your bags" To them, "help" meant carrying all eight heavy (we have relocated to Costa Rica) bags to the most impecable, immaculate, large room with kitchen we have ever seen. Perfect would be a word that would fit these quarters. Talk about two guys who know how to make you feel at home, when we walked into the front door all they asked was "what can we get you tonight? What time would you like breakfast? Any dietary concerns? Coffee is available at six thirty, here's your key, this is how the safe works, see you in the morning". Wonderful!! The most squeamish traveler had his best night sleep in the most comfortable, clean bed in which he has ever slept on the road. More tomorrow. Second day started with the best breakfast I have ever eaten outside of my home. The view was great, the food was delicious, Carlos and Werner were the best. The third day was a repeat of the first two with the exception that when my car rental malfunctioned, Werner actually identified the problem (at night I might add) and said if the battery died, he would jump start it in the morning. Maybe I can talk them into changing the oil (just kidding). My point is this. Take it from a reluctant, fussy traveler. Don't waste time surfing the internet looking for a place to stay in Costa Rica, book here. Period. Day four started out great and ended better. Nothing else to say but the best I have ever seen.

For thirteen days, my wife and I were treated like royalty by Carlos and Werner. We stayed in one of their several upstairs apartments. Just like the downstairs common area, it was immaculate. Our area consisted of a bedroom, closet, bathroom, and semiprivate deck. The bed was comfortable, and the four-foot square glass-enclosed shower had plenty of hot water.
We quickly fell into a morning routine centered on Carlos’ gourmet breakfasts. We woke up to the nearby church bells playing “Ave Maria” with the howler monkeys singing along. On our way downstairs to the patio, we were immediately given a cup of coffee. After one day they knew how much cream and sugar we preferred. Then we were served a different fantastic breakfast every morning. It started with a bowl of mixed fruit and a glass of orange juice which was followed by a surprise breakfast. Each breakfast was different; each breakfast was delicious and a visual delight. The patio where we ate was quite comfortable. The temperature was in the low 70s every morning. The view of the lake was stunning. Because of these breakfasts, we started every day in a very pleasant mood.
Carlos and Werner were also helpful throughout the day. They were very knowledgeable on all the area attractions. They were also pillars of their community and seemed to know everyone in town. Between them, they spoke English, Spanish, and German fluently. Carlos grew up in the town. They assisted us with reservations to area attractions and even with doing our laundry. They were never intrusive, but always willing to advise us when asked on how to “get the most bang for the buck.” They shared their life stories with us, and we with them.
In short, Carlos and Werner significantly increased our enjoyment of our Costa Rican vacation.

Our best accommodation during our stay in Costa Rica. Carlos and Werner are the perfect host! Always there when needed, helpful and full of very helpful tips for activities around the beautiful Lake Arenal area. The quality of their B&B, starting with the bed linen, bath towels and the creative breakfast dishes were really outstanding! The location was just perfect for traveling in this region, also to avoid the tourist spots in nearby La Fortuna. We spent 9 nights with Carlos and Werner at their beautiful property. From the moment we arrived, they made sure we were comfortable and settled. We had the banana suite on the second floor with amazing views. It had a king size bed, lounge area, large bathroom, mini fridge, large tv, cable tv, internet, in room safe and coded door lock on each room. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the view was so peaceful. There was a large shower, huge soaker tub and the softest bath towels I’ve ever felt, even at home! The chauffeur services were top notch and they took us anywhere we wanted to go. Both Werner and Carlos are so knowledgeable about the area, their own community, and the country/culture in general. Every question was answered and you can feel their love and passion for Costa Rica. They take immense pride in their business and it shows in every detail. Clean, comfortable and fabulous, right down to the hand pressed sheets! Their restaurant recommendations in their community were perfect and I ate the best casada all week at their local Soda! Now to the meals - this deserves its own section, honestly. Carlos is passionate about cooking. He prepared meals for us right in front of us most days - with skill and flare and great detail to not only flavor but presentation as well. Even with my picky requests, Carlos and Werner take everything into consideration to allow each individual guest the opportunity to have a great culinary experience. Every meal was different for all nine days. Some days were sweet, some days were savory. Every day included freshly squeezed orange juice and the freshest fruit ever - many ingredients from their own garden. There are too many to list but Dutch babies and French toast Monty Cristo were just a couple of our favorites.
If you are traveling in this area of Arenal, do yourself a favor and spend some time here with Werner and Carlos. You won’t regret it! It definitely deserves more than 5 stars.

My 10-year-old daughter and I stayed at Carlos and Werner's B&B for three peaceful nights. We slept in a beautifully appointed and clean room on comfortable beds, woke to the sound of birds in the banana grove on their property below us, and sat down to an amazing breakfast on the patio cooked up by Carlos each morning. Both Werner and Carlos helped us plan our itinerary while we stayed in Nuevo Arenal: stand-up paddle boarding with Jose one morning, a night hike with "Crazy" Allen another evening, a day of sightseeing and thermal baths. They booked our activities when possible and gave us helpful instructions on doing it ourselves when required. We visited the chickens who provide fresh eggs for breakfast, and Carlos even introduced us to a couple! I loved staying in Nuevo Arenal because it's a pleasant, quiet town where you can drive into La Fortuna and then leave the flocks of tourist vans. There are a few really great food options in the town as well, including the sodas. Carlos and Werner will give recommendations. They are wonderful with communication and go above and beyond to help with anything you need.
As we were a mother and daughter traveling just us two, safety was of my greatest concern. Not once did I feel at all unsafe at Casa Donna Rosa, day or night. They watch out for their guests while giving you space. Carlos and Werner were both very sweet to my daughter who can be shy with new people. We loved staying here and have recommended it to friends already.

We recently spent 5 nights at Casa Donna Rosa BnB. Everything about it was a great experience. We stayed in the Banana Room. The bed was comfortable, the room was cozy, the patio we had overlooked the mountain scape, and the breakfasts were amazing. Carlos cooked something different every day for us and it was always delicious. We were there on Valentine's day and he took the extra time to cut our fruit into heart shapes. Every morning we had fresh squeezed orange juice, a fruit bowl and the main entree. Carlos and Werner are great hosts. They know the area well and can suggest as well as make reservations for things for you to do. They were also fun to sit and have a conversation with. Even though they live in a small village there are many good restaurants close by, and the B n B is located central for many of the area attractions.

Casa Donna Rosa B&B is managed with the utmost care. They do an extra mile in a gastronomy sense i.e. in the bathroom there would have been a new toothbrush, just in case you forgot yours. All details are well-coordinated and the room is fully equiped. The bed was extremely comfortable and we slept very well. The hosts, Werner and Carlos, were extremely helpful and knowledgeable in giving us good advises. The breakfast was fesh and selfmade by the host's, yummy. The terrace has a splendid view of the lake Arenal. I have to admit, the pool is fresh. The swing seat is a good idea, I liked it, but also the sunlounger. Restaurants for dinner, you have nearby in walking distance. Thank you for the beautiful stay, we can recommend you warmly.

We wanted to experience small town Costa Rica authentically for reference with future retirement plans. B & B’s have always been our first choice of accommodation while travelling. The Casa Donna Rosa is most definitely a luxury stay in all aspects, blended superbly with a down home feel provided by Carlos and Werner. As hosts they have literally thought of everything, and readily provide knowledge of the area,and service above and beyond anyone’s possible expectations. Their exquisite taste in home design, and finishings is greatly appreciated. Breakfast was devine. Carlos is quite capable and imaginative in the kitchen. We had a different breakfast each of the nine mornings, even catering to gluten free. I guess his record is 24 different breakfast dishes. They are fluent in multiple languages so communication is easy.

We stayed at Casa Donna Rosa between April 27 and May 1. Prior to our stay, hosts Carlos and Werner made reservations for us at different locations such as Monteverde's zip lines, Rio Celeste waterfall and tubing, hanging bridges at Místico Park, kayaking at Lake Arenal and much more. We stayed in the large Banana room, which had a great balcony view of their patio and Lake Arenal. The location is sleepy, but after a day of rigorous climbing, hiking, kayaking, driving and tubing, it was a welcome respite. Nuevo Arenal has a couple of small restaurants, which are walking distance from the B&B. If you stay with Carlos and Werner, be sure to walk around their garden, which is full of fruit trees. Carlos also prepared tasty breakfast every morning.
