The history of the Château d’Audrieu is closely linked to the history of Normandy and its most famous representative, William the Conqueror. He became William II of Normandy in 1035 after the death of his father. He turned Normandy into a powerful duchy, which was independent of the Kingdom of France. Following his victory at the Battle of Hastings, William became the king of England in 1066. His epic is illustrated by the Bayeux Tapestry, a precious embroidery from the 11th century, which is listed on the Memory of the World register by the UNESCO and preserved in the William the Conqueror Centre in the town of Bayeux. The village of Audrieu, which was already known during Antiquity as Alderium, is only a dozen kilometres away from Bayeux. Traces of Gallo-Roman houses and a feudal motte were found there. The village also harbours the Gothic church Notre Dame d’Audrieu. The château is situated close to the village. Its current architecture is from the beginning of the 18th century, but its history dates back to the 11th century. Originally, the seigneury of Audrieu belonged to the Percy family. One of the family members, William de Percy, participated in the battle of Hastings alongside William the Conqueror. According to the legend, Sir de Percy was William the Conqueror’s personal cook. I t is said that at Hastings he knocked out a few Saxons by hitting them with a skimmer. For this he was ennobled, became the first lord of Hastings and sired the dukedom of Northumberland. His descendants founded the Juaye-Mondaye Abbey (which is nearby and worth a visit) and built the château. In 1593, Audrieu was passed down to the Séran family, following the marriage between Marguerite de Percy and Guillaume de Séran, who was a gentleman of the king’s chamber. He saw his land elevated to a barony in 1615. The château was sold during the French Revolution and returned to the Séran family during the Bourbon Revolution. It became the property of the Livry-Level family, following the marriage between Nicole Saillard de Boisberthe, a descendant of the Séran family, and Philippe Livry-Level (1898- 1960), who was a member of the French resistance, Free France pilot, former mayor of Audrieu and former MP of Calvados. During the Second World War, the German army set up their headquarters here. On the 8th of June 1944, 24 members of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division and two British soldiers were killed, in the orchards, forests and clearings around the château. The château has been listed as a historical monument since the 27th of December 1967. It became a 5-star hotel and a member of the prestigious Relais et Châteaux Association in 1977.

We visited here in celebration of our 40th anniversary. Upon check in we were upgraded to a suite because of our anniversary and Jerome, the manager, had the gardener Alain pick a bouquet of ruby (50th)red tulips from the hotel garden to place our room. How very thoughtful! Service was extraordinary! What a gem!! Highly recommend if you’re coming to Normandy!!

Hotel's Favorite
We stayed at Chateau d’Audrieu for 5 days, a family of 5 in two rooms. The chateau and its gardens are exceptionally beautiful and the whole estate is amazingly kept. The rooms were very nice and spacious and exactly what we hoped for. We also rode their bikes to the forest which was a real fun adventure. We read some earlier bad reviews about the service, so we were a bit worried before our trip, however the service was exceptional, very quick, very helpful, and the staff went out of their way to make us feel at home. So if they had any issue in the past it's long gone. The location is also great, very close to the lovely town of Bayeux and to the beaches. We had a lovely stay and we highly recommend this place.

When we booked here we were a bit taken aback by the cost, but having stayed at many Relais & Châteaux properties over the years we know they are generally expensive and almost always worth it. This is not the case with Chateau d’Audrieu. The property and gardens themselves are nice but hardly five star and justifying of the price, particularly when items like the playground (we were travelling with three children) are a clearly a grotty afterthought. The rooms are also nice enough, but not at all what one expects for this price point. Peeling paint, spartan furniture, a pathetic excuse of a mini bar and coffee station; I’ve stayed in well-appointed three-star roadside hotels that were equally nice at a third of the price. But it is with service where the hotel really falls apart. At a reserved dinner in the casual restaurant with three hungry children we waited nearly forty minutes at a table with no cutlery, no glasses, no menus for someone to say hello. Wait staff kept rushing past our table pretending not to see us and only after we had gone foraging for bread and menus ourselves and physically accosted one of the servers did we get some water and our orders taken. Breakfast the next morning was even worse. The servers, who are clearly trying their best in an impossible situation, told us that they cannot get sufficient staff. Well then close one or both of the restaurants, or severely limit the number of guests in the hotel. Nothing about this property justifies what they charge. They should either close their restaurants or alternately the hotel itself and focus on one area in which they can deliver a decent product. Until then Relais & Châteaux should really remove them from their Association.

My wife and I spent two nights there at the end of September. We knew in advance that the restaurant was closed due to lack of staff, no big deal. However, after our experience, I wonder if the hotel would not be better served at this point by simply closing down during the shoulder/low seasons. The hotel is suffering from a lack of staff, and when we were there, a lack of clients. The hotel was empty and had a strange The Shining vibe at night. It took 20 minutes of wait the first night to get a drink at the bar and the second night I instead had to go to the reception to ask if there was a barman on duty after another wait. I don't mind to wait and can deal with slow and inattentive service, but not when staying at a Relais & Chateau and not when paying the tariff for such. It was way too expensive for the service rendered and my heart goes out to the tourist sat near our table on the second morning who was trying to understand if the breakfast was included but could not get an answer from the server. I would advise potential travelers to think very hard about alternatives before staying here. There are many other choices around this area and in any case, you have to drive to Bayeux to find a restaurant.

Very nicely renovated castle in beautiful park. Service massively below what would be acceptable, particularly in restaurant for breakfast. Staff would try and be polite, but lack of training and languages (both French and English) unacceptable for a hotel of this standing and price level. And the cleanliness of the restrooms in the pool area is at the level of highway toilets. Manager unavailable for more than 48 hours for a chat and feedback, and no deputy, either. Overall, quite a disappointment.

Dear guests, I would like to thank you very much for sharing your experience at the Château d'Audrieu. I am sorry to read your comment and do apologize for not having exceeded your expectations. We are suffering from a staff shortage and our team are working hardly to make every stay of our guests an enjoyable and unforgettable moment. We are working hardly on a solution to recruit but looks a bit more tricky than we thought. I look forward to welcoming you again.

Second visit here, this time we stayed for 2 nights to visit the Normandy landings beaches. The room we were allocated was nice, with comfortable super kingsized (180cm) bed and a ?newly refitted bathroom with bath and walk in shower. A coffee maker – I’m assuming for the American market – was provided, but no kettle. The restaurant was a little chaotic and seemed to suffer from a lack of experienced staff ( presumably due to Covid). The dinner menu didn’t change while we were there. However service was prompt and friendly, and the food was reasonable. The hotel is located in the countryside with no other dining options close by. There’s a very nice heated outdoor pool, and pretty gardens.

This beautiful place offers great comfort, a genuinely warm welcome and a perfect balance between informality and professionalism. The grounds are enchanting with a lovely swimming pool in a secluded spot where drinks, ice creams and light snacks are offered all day. Breakfast was extensive and generous, dinner delicious and beautifully presented. Our rooms were lovely with spacious bathrooms equipped with lots of towels and toiletries. Every member of staff was polite and helpful particularly at the desk where our every request for advice and information was met with smiles and real help. The menace that is COVID-19 caused potential problems which were swiftly overcome thanks to the knowledgeable staff. We hope to return very soon.

From the moment we arrived, they will look after you. It is friendly, service-minded and very professional, and they really pay attention to details that will make you feel like an honoured guest in a Chateau. You feel the historical past, but with all modern comfort. Very easy to bring children, they had both a playground for smaller children and the dining rooms are designed to ensure that if you want a romantic dinner (without other people's children around), you will not notice any children. They offer ping-pong, a pool and other possibilities for older children. My children loved the place!

The room we had was fantastic, windows overlooking the forest and the grounds. Our bath had fireplace, huge tub and separate shower, double sinks. The room was beautifully decorated, and spacious, as was the bathroom. Lovely grounds, pool and gardens. Very helpful front of the house staff. Restaurant staff was not so great. Slow service and rather condescending breakfast staff. Dinner was delicious, but they were seriously understaffed. Our waiter did his best.
