I looked at the hostal in booking.com, but at the end I reserved directly with the owner for a price of $25 per night for two people. We wanted to stay Easter weekend there. At the end we did not even stay for one night. The owner was just rude! As it was a holiday weekend, he wanted to charge double when we arrived!
The hostel is beautifully built, with rooms set over different floors. There is a garden/courtyard and outdoor kitchen to chill in, as well as hammocks and tables dotted around. The rooms are charming, clean, and the water is nice and hot. Canoa is tiny so it is very close to everything!
We stayed 5 nights. Overall Rooms and area is very clean (they could exchange the mats in the bathroom though). And you have your own bathroom. But the hammocks in front of the rooms are inviting to hang out and the roof top terrace has a nice view over Canoa. Javier is a nice and friendly guy. At first we weren’t sure about the hotel as when we arrived only the cleaning woman was there and she didn’t say a word of hello or welcome but was asking for the money straight away. So we fought it would have been a big mistake to have chosen this one, but in the end we were quite happy about it. Canoa itself is very quiet, not much to do except for surfing (which we do). People are a bit reserved - probably due to the heavy earthquake experience. But for a few days of surf it’s fine.
For those that don't know, Canoa is an incredibly small, impoverished town. There are very few options for lodging. My friends and I couldn't find anything with nicer facilities that was available when we went in August 2017. With that caveat, Hostel Rutamar is probably one of the five nicest places to stay in Canoa. The rooms are clean, the hostel is very unique and interestingly built, the owner is nice and usually available on site, it's safe, there's parking, towels are provided, it's two blocks from the beach, and there was free filtered water. On the con side, the rooms are damp and smell like mildew and there are no screens on the windows (but fans provided). It's definitely got a basic hostel feel. It's a great place to stay if you're looking for the basics and want a solid price. …
This is my favorite hostel I have stayed in in canoa. I have been to many in my month and half here. It's a great price. The rooms are very clean and well kept + warm showers. The owners are very sweet. Ten out of ten recommend!
