I spent two nights here, and enjoyed every minute. The host is fluent in English and extremely accommodating, so I immediately felt welcome. My room was a traditional tatami room which was enhanced by some very nice artwork. In fact, there are a wide variety of very interesting art works, including an enormous kokeshi doll collection, on display throughout the...

On my first trip to Japan I was lucky enough to stumble across this cozy family run Ryokan in the magical sea-side town of Sakata. Keita, the director, who is fluent in English, his wife Akane and family made me feel at home at once and turned my visit into an unforgettable one. My lovely decorated room had tatami floor...

On my second visit to Sakata, a nice port city in Yamagata Perfecture, I stayed at Wakaba Ryokan, centrally located, within a five minute walk to the rice warehouses, Tobishima Market, Honma House, Kyu Abrumiya home and a town of "Oshin", a movie made in 80's and still watched worldwide on Utube. Wakaba Ryokan, family operated by Keita, who speaks...

And we are very pleased to hear from you that you enjoyed your stay here with us ! As you have known already, our ryokan is a-very-small-family-running ryokan but we try the best to make...

What a find!! Sakata is a small seaside town made famous as the backdrop for the 1983 TV drama "Oshin" which was the most watched drama in Japan. It can still be viewed on YouTube in many different languages. What makes the Wakaba Ryokan and even greater find is that it maintains all you can expect of traditional Japanese customs,...

Should you be fortunate enough to be considering a trip to Sakata then this is the place to stay! A family run Ryokan, it is full of character and charm. It is a short bus ride from Shonai airport and located in the centre of town, 5-10 minutes walk to the rice museum, ferry port (for boats to Tobishima) and...

This is a beautiful ryokan run by two ladies, one of whom speaks quite good English (certainly better than our Japanese). It is a fairly long walk from Sakata Station, but handy to most of the interesting sites in the town. We only stayed for one night and the weather was dreadful, so a return visit is planned so we...
