We splurged and stayed at the Mizuno Ryokan to celebrate our 49th wedding anniversary. We were driving and it took a little while to find it because it is tucked in an alley behind a school. However, well worth the hunt! It is right on the beach with a fabulous view out to offshore islands. The staff is amazing in how they try to cater to your every need. English is spoken but we did a lot of pantomime as well. The food was fantastic; each course was a new experience in how to prepare Japanese cuisine and we enjoyed it all - even the squid that wasn't quite dead yet! All fresh, small portions but so much that we could not have eaten more at the end.

We've had a wonderful stay in this hotel. The room was very spacious, clean and warm. The whole venue is basically a well maintained historical building which used to be a samurai's residence, full of beautiful historical features. The members of staff are so friendly and professional. We instantly got on and joked about things. That was really lovely! The homemade food is absolutely fantastic! It was extremely fresh and good quality, not greasy at all! The hot bath area is a bit tucked away and not very big. You'll have to go past a few pools where they keep all the fish and shell fish (for dinner), the smell of sea is very strong but at least you know your dinner is going to be very fresh. We understand that it's very difficult to extend a historical building, and they've done well to provide us a hot bath facility. Even though it's small, it's still clean and nice. I highly recommend this place. The small town has got lots of historical sites, buildings to visit. A lovely place to rewind and chill.

This ryokan is located at the seaside in Karatsu, with the rooms overlooking the beach and the Karatsu Bay. The Japanese style room is decent and comfortable, though I would say is lacking of power plugs for travelers nowadays. The onsen is indoor, of good size to enjoy but it would be even better if there is a window. The highlight for us would be the seafood kaiseki. The ryokan has its own fish tanks to keep the squid, fish, lobster, prawns, and other seafood live before serving, ensuring the best quality and freshness. On the night we have scallops, sashimi for the catch of the day - kelp grouper, lobster and squid, all served live and whole, mochi from lotus root, grilled prawn, grilled oysters, steamed egg custard in bowl, braised grouper fish head, squid tempura and grilled squid, lobster head miso soup, rice and pickles, plus fruit. Having been to many ryokans I would rate this one as one of the best in terms of seafood offering, no wonder the Japanese royal family and some famous politicians had visited this ryokan before.

I spent a week in the northern part of Kyushu with my husband and my parents. We stayed at at Mizuno Ryokan for 7 days. It was an amazing experience for all of us. Mizuno Ryokan is situated right next to a beautiful beach. The lookout from our rooms is fantastic ocean view. Mitsuru-san, the Chef of Ryokan continuously impressed us with his perfection in cooking and surprised us with thoughtful dinner menus. The owner of Ryokan, Yumiko-san and her staff were super nice and friendly. We love the tradition of Japan and we were grateful for the warm hospitality and feeling of being home during our stay Ryokan. Thank you so much to Yumiko-san, Mitsuru-san and all staff members for giving us a great memory of Japan. I have no hesitation recommending Mizuno Ryokan to anyone who wants to experience tradition culture of Japan and great taste of Japanese cuisine.
