Out of 25 top class Ryokans I have stayed across Japan. Murata is definitely the best ryokan I have ever experienced. You can only book the room from their website (pay at check out). We booked in one month advance, due to the popularity of this ryokan, we were lucky enough to book the last room that in-line with our travel schedule. Pre check in process was smooth as the ryokan offer luggage pick up service while you arrived in Yufu station or from your last ryokan (in Yufuin), which means you can enjoying your sight seeking around Fuyu station and Kinrin lake hassle free. When closer to the check in time 3PM. Ryokan has arranged to pick us up from Kinrin lake for free. Before we arriving at the ryokan, their manager and staff already waiting out door to welcome us. And check in process is also very smooth, the staff will show you around the ryokan and your room. Note that the staffs speaks better English than any other Ryokans I have been to. Room is tidy and clean with high ceiling, which makes it super spacious. Drinks in the fridge are free. Shower and private bath are in-room, ryokan did a great job in controlling the room temperature as you you won’t feel cold wherever you are. Bath is good size for two. Water temperature is around 42 degrees but friendly staff made it 40 degrees because they knew my wife is pregnant. Pillow is slight harder than other ryokans, but softer pillow option is available by asking reception. Overall the room is stylish and comfortable. Tan’s bar offers free non-alcohol for ryokan guests and you can enjoying the famous B-speak cake (Swiss cake roll) in the bar so you don’t have to queue up in the B-speak shop and a lot of time cake would sold out in the afternoon. We have ordered a short cake to take with us when departing. Music was soft and classic, which made the entire atmosphere very relaxing. Dinner is in room with kaiseki style of dishes. The service was excellent, we were impressed by the service provided by Yumi, she is extremely attention to details. Eg gave my wife a cushion because the chair could be a bit hard. I’m a left hander, she has adjusted chopstick setup for left hander for the breakfast. All those little things really counts. Food presentation is excellent and taste is ryokan standard. The Ryokan has prepared small birthday cake and presents for us and the baby as they know from passport that my wife’s birthday is in Jan, this is very touching. Ryokan offer massage service, I was very impressed with the skill and service by Hiroko, who also speak great English as she studied in Melbourne for a year. Check out process was also excellent, the staff will come to your room to pick up your luggage and free taxi is already waiting for you at the main entrance. Score out of 10 as per below: (against all 25 top class ryokans I’ve stayed) Room Comfort: 10 Service: 10 Dinner taste: 7 This is not a cheap ryokan, but it worth every single dollar that you have spent. The service is high standard, as the staffs respect you in all way. They care about you and you are welcomed to tell them if you have any reasonable needs and they will try their best to make it happened. I would recommend this Ryokan to everyone who is travelling to Oita Prefecture or still struggling to decide which ryokan to stay if you have enough budget as you would not go wrong by staying at Murata.

My best ever Ryokan experience! Came highly recommended from friends and did not disappoint. The most lovely place, people and food. This is perfection in Japan! We drove from Fukuoka airport and this is 5 minutes from downtown Yufuin.

This place should remain a secret. It has only 12 villas, all over 100 years old, originally located near Tokyo but moved here recently. It is western style with spacious, modern rooms with high ceilings, full amenities and your own onsen. Service was excellent in the Japanese tradition. When we arrived in our little Toyota, were were greeted by about 10 staff lined up on the driveway- a bit like in Downton Abbey :). We also had great advise from the concierge before arrival. Dinner and breakfast are included. The 10 course Kaiseki dinner was the best we've had. Each dish was beautiful prepared and presented.

Visited June 2015. The hot spring resort is located slightly outside the town center, but the resort provides with transport to the town if the guest requires and they will pick you up from the station if you arrive by train. The whole resort is like a piece of art, so tastefully built with nice texture from the very old wooden furnitures. The room we reserved is a mixed style of modern and traditional with its own private hot spring which is heavenly! The service level we talk about here is out of the world. They pay attention to every details. They even get me a birthday cake when they notice it's my birthday during my stay. As with most of such resorts, dinner is served in your room, course by course and it was fabulously cooked with the freshest ingredients from the season. Yes it is pricy, but it's such a wonderful experience if you want to experience the traditional ryokan. Couldn't express how much I love this zen, peaceful resort. If you want a room, it is recommended to book in advance, as they don't have many rooms like those big hotels and the demand is high.

We were able to stay at Sanso Murata for one night. We were able to get the Showa Besso. Basically, it was a huge Showa-era built house that was brought from Tohoku region. It really did seem like a waste for us since this house could have fit easily 5-6 guest, but there were only two of us. Once we arrived at the front, the staff carried our bags and parked our car for us. The room was immaculate. Westerners may not like ryokan in general b/c they don't care for the 'old' look and smell of ryokan, but I take in every bit of it. Showa besso has its own onsen. It was nice to have the accessibility of the onsen in my own bathroom! Dinner and breakfast was had at the main building. We had our own dedicated server who provided us dish after dish of local specialty foods. Seki-saba for example was offered on an immaculate platter. What was most interesting was we heard from several room away a baby crying. A minute later, we saw a staff person carrying the baby in a baby bjorn trying to comfort him/her. We first thought it was a staff's kid. We don't mind kids at all. However, come to find out it was another guest's kid that the staff was trying to soothe so that the parents could have a meal in peace and quiet. Talk about service! After dinner, we went back to the room for a soak in the onsen and then went back to the in-house bar. It was very spacious. Maybe 20-30 seats with two bartenders. Ordered some Yamazaki 18 year and Hakushu 18 year. These are some expensive Japanese whiskeys, but got to try them. This is not a cheap place to stay, but if you want a top notch ryokan, Sanso Murata is the place to go!
