Farmers bent over working in the fields stood to wave as our train neared this peaceful town. We were greeted at the train station by the hotel valet who took our bags. He provided a map and suggested we walk up their town's Main Street to visit the shops. We thoroughly enjoyed that walk and were able to grab some... More

We heard about this special ryokan from American friends who have come regularly over the years to unwind and relax. They offered it rave reviews, and based on their experience my husband and I decided to make a special trip to the area to experience the magic of Kyushu in general, and this ryokan in particular. The Tamanoyu is a... More

The room we stayed in is 10+8 semi-western room. The experience in this ryokan has been overwhelmingly pleasant, from the arrival at their place till the time we leave, the service is great, the atmosphere is great, the food is great, the place is great! 5 Overall rating does not do this ryokan justice for what they provide, the price... Been to a fair number of onsen hotels myself and this one stands out for all the right reasons. Every bit of the hotel is an exquisite blend of traditional Japanese meet western countryside. Upon arrival you are warmly welcomed from your car, your luggage carried to your room whilst you are ushered to the beautiful reception lounge for a... More

My husband and I arrived to Yufuin tired and very hot from the high summer temperatures in July. Although we have visited Japan before, this was the first time we were alone without a guide. We had taken a train from Fukukoa and enjoyed the two hour plus ride into the mountains. A Japanese friend had arranged to have the... More

You cannot find a nicer onsen ryokan in the Kyushu Island. The place was beautiful, well managed and the most modern, with 17 rooms. Our suite was huge, a tatami sitting room (for sleep if one prefers), a western style bed room, a large bath room with a separate toilet, a shower and private onsen, and a closed in porch... More

We arrived here by train at noon to see farmers stopping their work to wave at us going by! Since we were early, we checked our bags at the onsen and walked the main street through the town. Here we found yummy food choices and had fun shopping. Our one night onsen experience was wonderful and very peaceful. Our room... More

This ryokan was once a retreat for Zen priests and is now a lovely onsen resort with 15 cottages. My husband and I spent two delightful days here in October, and, as westerners, thoroughly enjoyed the immersion in Japanese culture. Yufuin, on Kyushu Island is totally off the tourist track, so much so, that whenever we were in the town,... More
