My buddy & I stayed at 山のホテル 夢想園 (Yama no Hotel Musouen) in mid-March 2023. From food to room service, everything was perfect. The food served was plated with such elegance, and tasted delicious.

The outdoor hot spring is awesome with a magnificent view of Mount Yufu which made people want to soak in at all times. The staff is very welcoming and friendly as well. We will definitely love to visit again.

We strongly recommend the hotel.

We stayed in a 3 room special room with irori. Extremely generous in size. Private outside bath, charcoal pit, the surprises kept coming. the ladies outdoor onsen is huge with a mountain view. Several private baths you can use when free. Food was amazing with local produce. Why stay in an ordinary onsen when you xan experience this. Highly recommended.

We visited Yufuin on the way while we were travelling from Hakata to Beppu via the Yufuin no mori sightseeing train. One of us had heard that this onsen was really recommended in Yufuin so we decided to pay it a visit. We turned right from out of the JR station and started climbing the hill upwards to the onsen. It would have been better if we had a car because it is really an uphill walk and while we were walking, we didn't see anyone doing the same. Just loads of cars passing by. But Mom was against driving in foreign countries, hence all 6 of us trooped uphill for half an hour. We could have used a taxi but we were trying to keep costs low. The entrance cost was about 700 yen, but I thought it was quite reasonable because the view of Yufu-dake was lovely and the weather was clear. The onsen had one large pool and part of it was sheltered. I did think the experience would have been better if they had more than one pool but the water quality and the scenery made up for it. Be sure to go early/ plan it as the first thing in your itinerary if you are doing a one day trip to Yufuin because this onsen closes at 3pm. Can't say much about the crowds because we visited the onsen on a weekday and while we were leaving, many people came, giving me the impression that a tourist bus had arrived. To get pictures of Yufu-dake, we walked to the carpark and took some pictures there.

This was such a lovely experience and I’ll remember it forever. The women’s onsen was the most spectacular I have ever seen and just so beautiful; the photos really don’t do it justice. The hotel itself is fairly decrepit (all sort of rusted faded glory, the corridors look like they’ve been untouched in fifty years) - so definitely not a luxury ryokan. But it is spotlessly clean, comfortable rooms and had lovely retro styling (especially the gorgeous cafe and change rooms). The garden is to die for and makes for beautiful photos. The dinner was neither here nor there but they were great at accommodating my vegetarian request and it’s served in a lovely room. But the staff are what made it all so special - the kindest, warmest ladies you could imagine. On a practical note - Yufuin town is pretty awful (touristy and junky) so don’t bank on spending any time there. If you’re touring the area I found Michelle Mackintosh’s book “onsens of Japan” very helpful and great tips for day bathing, hotels etc. Thank you Musouen for being so charming and a wonderful memory.

This is a basic fee taxi from Yufuin Station.
I visited this place twice. Once staying in ryo-ka, Once using spa .

I think that Spa better than ryo-kan.
Large bath scenery is amazing.
You will see Yufuin Mt in large bath.

Great experience in here. People are friendly, and the meal are tasty.
They also have several choice for Onsen, you can choose private or public.
It almost takes 30 minute if you went to hotel by walking and enjoy the scene in Yufuin. 700-800 yen for Taxi from Yufuin station.

I booked this onsen hotel via the Japs website and thought I got a good deal. One night stay with breakfast and dinner for 2 persons at Yen31,000. Room is clean and I also got good view of the Yufuin mountain, which is really good. Onsen is also very spacious and there are also private outdoor onsen available for private use without surcharge on a first come first serve basis. However, when I expect everything is quite nice, the dining at this hotel was found to be terrible. The dinner cuisine was the worst I have ever experienced, not only in onsen hotel, but in any dining venues you can imagine. It is a Japansese traditional dinner with 7-8 courses but the food is of the lowest grade and no freshness at all. Maybe it is due to the plan I booked is not the top priced one. However, there is no mentioning on the variety and quality of the food when I booked. I am not comparing it to the quality of any fair Japanese dinner. It is even worse than the cheapest Japanese cuisine you will find in a normal restaurant for just Yen1000. Not even one dish among the 8-9 courses is up to a fair standard. This spoiled the original pleasant experience with the good onsen and splendid view of Yufuin mountain. The take away of this story is do not always expect Japanese food is of good quality. Next time when you book an onsen hotel with meals, do not go for the cheapest option offered by a hotel and you will run the risk of ruining the stay.

Echo with all positive reviews!
The staff who took care of us during our stay understands basic English.
View of the private outdoor onsen is simply beautiful, breathtaking!
If you have chance do try traveling to Yufuin via the scenic train - Yufuin no Mori.

It was “that picture” I saw each time I searched for Yufuin onsen that made me seek and seek until I found that that view was from Musouen.
The hotel is located on a hill south of the Yufuin town center. The ground was surrounded by lush green trees and moss. The hotel buildings were low-rise and very natural.
There were 2 large open-air onsens for women and men with similar magestic view of Mount Yufu and Yufuin valley, and also another smaller open-air onsen for women. There were 4 private family onsens (2 indoor and 2 outdoor) that can accommodate a family of 4-5 persons each.
Our room for two could actually accommodate 6-8 guests or 2 families with 2 8-tatami size rooms with living room and separated hinoki bath and toilet. There was a drip coffee machine with coffee grinder & coffee beans. In the cupboard were Noritake coffee cups and Kiriko glasses. What impressed us was the beautiful watercolor postcard set with complimentary set of stamps for both domestic and international post and also a brushstroke pen.
In-room kaiseki was really delicious which included sashimi, Miyazaki beef steak and kurobuta shabu. Japanese breakfast set was also scrumptious and excellent.
The only drawback apart from the high price tag was the lack of wifi. Sometimes, to disconnect give you the chance to really relax and enjoy the refined simplicity of the resort.
All in all it was one of my most memorable stays.

Stayed in end March and throughly enjoyed this onsen. It is away from the main town of Yufuin so best if you have your own car. The the service is impeccable and all the staff make us feel welcomed. Some staff speaks english but even for the ones that do not, it doesn't stop them from being most helpful.

The onsen is probably the best in Yufuin. The public one offers a gorgeous view of Mt Yufu and there are a few private onsen which you can use free of charge on a first come first serve basis. The ryokan has large grounds and garden which was lovely. It really feels like very private onsen as there are not so many rooms and our room overlooked a Sakura Tree in blossom which was stunning.

The food was meticulously planned and served in a dining room area. The food was Kaiseki style which was presented beautifully and tasted excellent.

I have stayed in many ryokans throughout Japan and I would say this is one of the best.
