We stayed at Chikuden Saryo so we could do the Kyushu Olle - a day walk between Asaji and Taketa. The ryokan has comfortable, large tatami mat rooms with a good outlook over Taketa - a quaint, small town nestled in a valley and partially surrounded by river. The hot baths are older but nice and hot with all facilities. Dinner and breakfast were served in a beautiful, private dining room overlooking the town. From exquisite sushi with great presentation, through to their signature grilled tofu 'sticks' with different dipping sauces on each stick it was a lovely romantic, private dining experiece. Just what one asks for in a ryokan. Difficult to book for westerners, at the time of booking I could not book via a normal website as it was listed but no rooms available. We stayed in 10 ryokan during our trip in Japan and this was one of the best. Wide and beautiful japanese style room with a balcony and a view on the town (the hotel is on a hill over the city), Excellent service, familial staff always very elegant preparing delicious meals (we recommend to eat dinner there!), always ready to help, free shuttle from the train station, comfortable traditional bath... Honnestly prices are really high, but we still recommend to stay there (and to enjoy this lovely city and its landscape) : we kept good memories and would be happy to come back again. More
