Amagase is an old onsen area. Don't expect beautiful hotels. These are old-school ryokans. I highly recommend staying anywhere in this area to be quite honest. There's really nothing like it anywhere in Kyushu. The hotel we stayed at allowed pets which was our main reason for staying. The food was so delicious and kept with traditional Japanese food. Everything here is Japanese style. They have private tubs (kazokuburo) on the roof of the building and on the first floor. Just absolutely beautiful. They also have a little tub on the very first floor for you to bathe your dog. Our dog was not happy about it but it happened. If you don't stay there you can just pay to use the hot springs too. Highly recommend this place. The staff was incredibly nice and helpful.

Room: We booked a Japanese style room. It's old but very spacious and clean. You can overlook the ocean in the living room. The view is fantastic. Food: Their dinner set were finely cooked. Very yummy. There are at least 10 different dishes. Onsen: the outside pool overlooked the two islands with beautiful Japanese garden decoration. Staff: very polite staff. We lost a pair of sunglasses there and they kindly delivered it to our hotel at another province free of charge. Cons: Staff are weak at English but they provided English information leaflet with all the essential information Location: you definitely need a car to get there
