After a long trip (train-bus-bus) all the way from Kagoshima, it was a wonderful surprise to be welcomed in this hotel by the kindly manager, Mr. Yosuke Sato. He and his staff did everything they could to ensure we had as enjoyable a stay as possible, from providing us all sorts of hiking maps to driving us around in the hotel bus, all the way to the train station — and even buying us gloves!

Our hotel room, a standard Western + Japanese style one (with tatamis and futons) was a delight to stay in, clean, modern and comfortable. And then there was the open-air rotemburo (hot bath), which we could have for free, all to ourselves... (though maybe that's not possible in the high season). And on top of this all, the dinner that we got that night (included in the price of the room) was simply out of this world: an incredible variety of tasty dishes, exquisitely refined.

And oh yeah, the hiking trails around are awesome too, in any kind of weather...

Warmly...

Similarly, we left very early in the morning and the hotel prepared a "box lunch" and transport down to the bus stop - even though it was before the hotel "opened" at 6:30 am. The hotel is centrally located for several day hiking options -- did a half day hike on the 3-lakes trail the day we arrived and a long day hike the next day up and over Karakuni-daki to the crater lake beyond. You won't need your own transport once you're here. But be aware that many of the hiking trails are currently closed because of volcanic activity hazard.

But getting back to the lodge. The room was spacious with a sitting area separate from the sleeping room. The dinners and breakfasts were excellent and there was a...
