We stayed at the beautiful and spacious Mitoya villa for two nights and three days. Absolutely enjoyed our time in the 150-year old property, with its iron hearth, beautiful sliding doors and paper frame windows. The property was very well maintained, stocked with supplies and fully functional with modern amenities. The Miyama F&B team is extremely professional (special recognition and many thanks to Michael - our friendly and informative Japanese-speaking French guide), communicative and helpful in making this holiday so much more memorable. From the highly personalised check-in and preparations, to the wonderful Bamboo crafting workshop - we had an amazing holiday experience that let us see another beautiful side of Japan.
If you come to Japan on a trip its so worth getting off the tourist trail and coming to Miyama. Its only 90 mins from Kyoto, but as you make the journey you leave behind the tourists and enter the real Japan. Miyama is an area of outstanding beauty and culture, its quiet and peaceful and so so authentic. Futon and Breakfast is not cheap, but its well worth it for the experience of staying in a genuine Japanese thatched cottage. Its a bit like staying in an art museum its so beautiful. The staff are great and they'll look after you well. I went on the bicylce tour and loved it, I highly recommend it as an activity and the wild boar hotpot is just sublime (not cheap but it is excellent). All around an amazing place to visit and the perfect antidote to the busy touristy cities.
This is a great place to experience traditional Japanese life style in a 150-year-old house and, at the same time, the convenience of modern living! The staff are very friendly and helpful too. They pick us up in Sonobe Station and drive us directly to the cottage. It's actually quite easy to get there.
I stayed with my mom here and we loved this house! It is a traditional Japanese house but with comfortable beds and fully-equipped modern life essentials lol. The staff are very friendly here and most of them speak English well enough to communicate. They are also very responsive. I emailed them to communicate about pick-up time and tour to the village. They usually responded within 24 hours.
For those who want to experience Japan outside of the "tourist traps" in the city, a tremendous option! We stayed in both the large house and the cottage, and enjoyed both immensely! after booking our reservation, we were contacted by the hotel staff. and our transportation options, our meal choices, and options fro exploring were explained to us. Etsuko does an amazing job of customizing your experience for what you want to see and do,. We had the choice to have a guided hike to see nearby waterfalls and forest hike, cut down sustainable bamboo and try our hand at making handcrafts that we kept as mementos of our trip, guided bicycle rides, trips to see a historic village (37 oher historic thatched houses in a quaint working village), local crafts and arts, shrine, temples... What ever you want to see and do (or Etsuko can help you know what there is to do in Miyama). Meals were amazing, Frogs serenade you at night, and wildlife abounds all around. The trip is actually much easier than we envisioned! We merely rode a JR train from Kyoto (free of charge if you have a JR Pass for your visit) to Sonobe Stateion, where Etsuko and Michael were there to pick us up and drive us to the accommodation. If you like the countryside, do yourself a favor and leap at the opportunity to stay here! …
