Sayaka and Nicolas are just a wonderful, friendly couple. They were welcoming and helpful. Great experience, great place. The meals were very special. This is all I have to say, so this last sentence is just filling up the illogical character requirement.
My husband and I enjoyed a perfect five nights at Furumaya as part of our honeymoon in Japan. After the hustle and bustle of touring Japanese cities, Furumaya was a peaceful place to relax and experience true Japanese country life. The surroundings are absolutely stunning. Although we didn't do many day trips, the four days passed surprisingly quickly simply enjoying the view, napping, writing in our journals, enjoying great food and drink, and visiting with our wonderful hosts. Sleeping with the open air and only the sound of frogs provided great rest compared to our everyday lives! Sayaka and Nicholas are the most warm, hospitable hosts and we really felt like a part of their family during our stay. We would definitely recommend booking the breakfast / dinner package, as Sayaka's homemade Japanese meals were some of the best we had on our trip. It was so special to eat rice and vegetables grown right on the property! My husband is a vegetarian and Sayaka was able to accommodate this no problem with non-meat meals that were creative and delicious. The house wine and draft beer was also wonderful. Although we rarely wanted to leave the guesthouse, the local onsen (public bath) was a favorite activity. Overall, a truly memorable travel experience!…
Near the end of our trip we wanted a pause in the Japanese countryside. Even if there was the possibility to do plenty, we stayed peacefully at Furumaya, and enjoyed its beautiful surroundings. The place is authentic and we could discover what it is like to live in the countryside. We also met a wonderful family who took very good care of us. The food was truly beautiful and excellent: Sayaka is a great cook. We stayed mainly at the house enjoying its peace but had a tea ceremony with a nearby master of tea: that was also en encounter and an unforgettable experience. We would recommend without reserve to stay at Furumaya. We stayed there three nights but would have enjoyed it longer. Thank you Sayaka, Nicolas and Theo.
Beautiful people, wonderful place, great service and excellent food! The owners Sayaka and Nicolas are just great hosts! We've really enjoyed our stay there. It's place to see if you go to Kyoto préfecture! J'adore ❤
Sayaka and Nicolas are very nice, open, interesting and interested and above all so welcoming. I have never met anything like this.Their old house is beautiful restored, the views are splendid and pacific, the meals are overwelming in looks and in taste. We will certainly love to come back, it’s the Japanese countryside at its best.
We are so glad we stayed at Furumaya and wish we had allotted more time. The countryside is a beautiful place to spend some time, especially if you’ve been traveling through the larger cities of Japan. The family has created a very welcoming and comfortable space to enjoy, and they make you feel right at home. Nicolas and Theo greeted us at the train station, and we enjoyed a cooking lesson with Sayaka in the evening. Her cooking is excellent, and much of the food you will eat is either local to the area or grown on the property. We are so thankful to Sayaka, Nicolas, and Theo for opening their homes and their hearts to us during our stay and would definitely recommend for others to stay here and take in this experience.
This review is long overdue. We spent 2 beautiful days at the farmhouse with Sayaka, Nicholas and their adorable baby boy, back in April this year. The place is surrounded by hills and very open vast green fields , lovely to walk around in. There are two comfortable clean rooms with an attached toilet (that can also be combined into a single large space if needed). Also worth mentioning is the most calming in-house onsen experience every evening , that we wouldn’t miss for anything. It’s the perfect getaway from city life , with the added bonus of Sayaka’s delicious gourmet meals , cooked with organic farm grown ingredients. I tried my hands at cooking some Sushi and traditional Japanese rice and curry myself, one of my fondest memories from the trip ! Thank you Sayaka and Nicholas for making our stay most special ! Richa…
The hosts are genuinely welcoming and accommodating. The food is superb, traditional and beyond our expectation. The attention to detail in all aspects of the home adds enormous value including a special, private onsen area. The home is over 200 years old and renovated to retain its original charm - the setting is perfect (rice paddies, vegetable gardens, fruit trees and small village further down the valley). It was one of the highlights of our trip and a welcome relief after days in the big cities an hour or two away
Highlights: 1) Sayaka-san's cooking. She's really talented, knowing how to cook and how to decorate the food palette to make it look as good as it tastes! 2) The peace and quiet of the surrounding. There's nothing much to do here, to be honest, but that's the reason why people come isn't it? The walks are not hiking trails per se, just paths. There's a cafe 2km from here and only open on weekends. Do come knowing what to expect ;) You'd definitely find peace and quiet here. 3) 120usd a night, everything included. It's steep to some, but considering that everything is home grown with love and effort, it's worth it. If you're apprehensive, stay at least a night! Thanks Sayaka-san for being friendly and accommodating. You're a wonder woman indeed, having to deal with guests and a new baby—and still so cheerful ! God bless :) …
We just stayed at Furumaya House for the second time. We are enchanted by the place, Sayaka the lovely host and chef and her family. Furumaya is in a calm, quiet, beautiful, authentic countryside in the mountains near Kyoto (45 min by train). This is a fabulous place to experience rural Japan, visit the area and experience delicious Japanese food home cooked using local products, most of it coming from the garden... Including the rice!
