We had the chance to visit Sakaya and Nicolas halfway through our stay in Japan. It was a very beautiful nature break. The welcome, accommodation and cuisine are top notch and it was a pleasure to talk with these hosts who are truly passionate. We highly recommend!

When my husband and I decided to go on a trip to Japan, I knew that I would want to spend some time in the countryside and get away from the big cities for a few days. I learned about Furumaya from a friend who used to live in Japan. I am so glad that we went, because staying at Furumaya House was my favorite part of our Japanese vacation.

Sayaka and Nicolas were so welcoming. Before we arrived at the home, we attended a traditional tea ceremony with a tea master in town. Then, we were able to spend the rest of the day relaxing while looking at the beautiful countryside.

The dinner that Sayaka cooked was the best meal I ate in Japan. Everything was fresh and local (almost all the produce from her farm!!). It was absolutely delicious and I also loved the Japanese bath I took after dinner.

Breakfast the next morning was also fantastic. I had the Western style breakfast and my husband had a traditional Japanese breakfast. Both amazing. I would recommend this trip to anyone!

Furumaya House was hands down the best part of our trip to Japan! Sayaka and Nicolas are wonderful hosts. Their home is clean and cozy, and they go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. I strongly recommend asking Sayaka for a Japanese cooking lesson. She's a fantastic teacher and an even better cook. Her food was some of the best we had in all of Japan. I also strongly recommend asking about the tea ceremony. Great learning experience and lots of fun. Can't wait until we can go back!

Great stay for family with young kids! Better stay for at least 3 days. Great host and hospitality. Excellent food and cozy rural environment. Surprise yourself with great kid-friendly parks and playground nearby where you and your kids can spend a whole day there (and they are free!).

Sayaka Sawada-San offers a heartwarming welcome, food and accomodation in Furumaya Guesthouse. The old house is very beautiful, clean and welcoming. She provides beautiful, incredibly tasty food, and makes everyone feels comfortable. The bath is awesome and we ate rice from the garden! - she also welcomes wwoofers. The countryside is enjoyable, and Amanohashidate is not far by train or car. The perfect guesthouse!

We started our maiden trip to Japan with a 2-night stay in Furumaya House as those were the only available nights during our 2 weeks in Japan. And what a treat that turned out to be!

Sayaka and Nicolas are respectful, kind and hospitable hosts - they generously shared their home and life journeys with us and made us feel welcome m from the moment Sayaka picked us up at Ayabe station.

Sayaka was a great chef and we had the most amazing breakfasts and dinners here. The meals really set high standards for the other Japanese meals we had in Japan thereafter. The sushi and onigiri made using “Nico-rice” was heavenly. The kids had the chance to learn how to make tamago-yaki and sushi rice. I love how Sayaka made use of fresh produce from their farm and the region for all the meals.

We will love to return again some time soon. My wife and two kids have so much fun in Furumaya House. I still have to win a soccer match with Theo, their lovely son and we would have much to explore in the lovely region. My daughter penned in the guest book that she “enjoyed every moment” of her stay and my son really loved the peaceful countryside.

We will be back. Till then, please take care, Sayaka, Nicolas and Theo.

Near the end of our trip we wanted a pause in the Japanese countryside. Even if there was the possibility to do plenty, we stayed peacefully at Furumaya, and enjoyed its beautiful surroundings. The place is authentic and we could discover what it is like to live in the countryside. We also met a wonderful family who took very good care of us. The food was truly beautiful and excellent: Sayaka is a great cook.
We stayed mainly at the house enjoying its peace but had a tea ceremony with a nearby master of tea: that was also en encounter and an unforgettable experience. We would recommend without reserve to stay at Furumaya. We stayed there three nights but would have enjoyed it longer. Thank you Sayaka, Nicolas and Theo.

My 3 children and husband and I had a wonderful experience during our 3 nights at Furumaya House! Perched on a hill, looking out over beautiful countryside and mountains, the setting is so lovely and relaxing. We all enjoyed our walks around the quaint neighborhood, working a bit to collect the food we would later eat, playing on the nearby "world's largest swing". The tatami room and futons were very comfortable and we all loved the evening ritual of an authentic Japanese bath and going to dinner in our yukata robes. Best of all is the delicious (REALLY DELICIOUS) food and the hospitality provided by the owner, Sayaka. If you are looking for an authentic and relaxing experience outside the busy city of Kyoto (easy train ride), this is a wonderful place to go!
