The climb up the hill to Anjuan is worth the effort as this is one of the most pleasant places I have stayed at in Kochi Prefecture. From afar the hotel looks rather unimpressive. When you arrive, however, you realize they have done an amazing job turning a somewhat drab concrete structure into a cozy and welcoming Japanese style inn. If you are ok with sleeping on tatami mat floors on futons, the Japanese style rooms are lovely and the communal bath is a real treat after a day of sightseeing. The food at Anjuan is really quite something and beautifully presented. I am vegetarian and multi-course evening meal was absolutely delicious and compared very well with my colleague’s meat and fish course. The Japanese breakfast was also excellent. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive and the many small courtesies on display that explain the ways of the Japanese inn to the uninitiated in English are all very welcome. …
The location of this hotel high above the Nakamura Town in Shimanto is spectacular. It is only a short distance to go out to enjoy some of the local delicacies in the town and the Hotel encourages visitors to try local delights. The exterior of the hotel is a little timeworn however the interior and the rooms have all been renovated and have a homely charm. The owner and his family are lovely people who are really welcoming to people from overseas and have gone out of their way to provide extensive information on the area. There are Japanese style rooms and western style rooms available, the Japanese tatami rooms were great and the blankets that were provided were so soft and comfortable. This was, without doubt, one of the best accommodation choices in Shimanto and a great way to finish an excellent tour of the region. The onsen was excellent and the breakfast was also excellent. …
Getting here might be a challenge, but I guess that is one reason I did not want to leave. The clean air, friendly couple running Anjuan and the nearby Shimanto River required so much more time than I had. Will definitely be back. I want to walk along the River all day and then enjoy a healthy Japanese meal at dinner. As the last remaining pure and uninterrupted river in Japan, Shimantogawa deserves much exploration and Anjuan can be a base for that.
Don't judge a book by its cover, this little family-run inn is charming inside. The chef is used to catering to vegetarians and vegans, and both dinner and breakfast were huge and delicious. Really enjoyed the outdoor onsen and quiet, simple rooms to, a perfect place to stay after biking along the Shimanto River.
Small, homey ryokan. Proprietors are a friendly couple. They spoke a little English. Both traditional and western-style rooms. HIghlights were the outdoor bath with nice views, and the superb multi-course traditional dinner.
We were so surprised by its cozy indoor decoration and wonderful scenery inside the room. The outdoor onsen is also very lovely. The food there were the best part, the fresh sashimi and seasonal local dishes! We highly recommend this boutique onsen hotel!
Spent 2 nights there and surprisingly impressed by the top quality of services that the hosts provided to clients. For example, I don’t eat fried fish and the host help provide me with alternative course for breakfast the next morning. Besides, it appears to me that the hosts are very attentive to details, and top quality of facilities, decor and furniture are used. The view of the accommodation is excellent overviewing the Shimanto City and surrounding green belt! Nevertheless, it also means that the uphill location could only fit for those travelers who travel on private car. Highly recommend to those travelers who demand quality services!
Location: it's located at the highest point of the district. Next to it, there is a park with plenty of Sakura. Food: Both of their regular and upgraded dinner were excellent. Prepare to fast yourself. Otherwise, you may not be able to finish the meal. They also have a tiny cafe which provide high grade coffee. The cafe was lovely decorated. Room: We booked a Japanese-western room which is spacious. What's a pity is that the view is not good. Their amenity for Onsen bath is nice
