We were in Sukumo to use it as a base to visit Temple 39 (Enkoji) and Temple 40 (Kanjizaiji) on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. We chose The Akisawa Hotel and it was a good choice indeed. While the hotel is older (1950 from memory) it has been at least partly renovated. Our room was large (for Japan) and well equipped. It was among the cleanest hotel rooms that we stayed in our 90 days in Japan. It is a business hotel and as is ofetn the case we coud not get a non-smoking room. The room did not stink of cigarettes however and we did not detect any even in the corridors. The in room wifi was crisp on the first night but we were unable to connect our IOS devices on the two following nights, although our laptop was ok. English is limited, both at the front desk and at the tourist information centre at Sukumo Station, but google translate helps as does mime and laughter.

There are not so many accommodation choices in this small town and any of the restaurants are spread around...
