This is a nice little Ryokan in Zao. The rooms are affordable for Japanese ryokan quality and this resort is definitely one of the more famous skiing areas in Yamagata. A short distance from activities for all seasons - fruit picking in the summer, winter sports and great scenery throughout the year - recommended. Onsen was excellent and the breakfast very delicious Worth a try!

The ryokan is close to both the Zao Bus station as well as the middle chairlift/ropeway, and is pretty much in the centre of the town area. They do provide transport to and from the bus station as well as the ski areas if you call them. On checking in, we were offered a local "tea", and as we were early, they kept our suitcases and subsequently took them to our room. The rooms were comfortable, with facilities attached. There is a private onsen, although that is on the dark side, whereas there are also three baths in the gender segregated onsens (one indoor, two outdoors). The onsen is highly acidic and sulphurish, so beware of tarnishing jewelry! I had no problems with the heat levels, although this is one of the hotter onsen (tip: the smaller outdoor onsen is the coolest, and it helps if you rinse with some of the water before getting in). The meals were excellent, with good variety each day, serving the local specialties.

Hotel is centrally located and easily accesible from the bus station and Zao Ropeway cable car. We are greeted by clean japanese style room which is big enough to accommodate 3person. The Kaiseiki Dinner and breakfast served is good so far with great variety with different food during our 3 days 2 night stay. The Onsen is clean with indoor and outdoor bath. The indoor bath as family style private bath as well. The rooms are adequately heated for winter and you feel nice and war

Location is walking distance from the bus terminal roughly 5 mins, if you can speak a bit of Japanese is a plus as the hotel do provide transport from bus terminal to hotel. Everyone is very friendly and helpful, they will try their best to speak in english and give suggestion. Breakfast is a WOW to me, is very good and delicious. If you are in for ski season, let the friendly staff know, they will give you suggestion where to rent the ski equipment and also send you to the ropeway. If you are an Onsen lover, this hotel provided nice onsen as well as there is a few public onsen around the corner. Overall i enjoy my stay with them and good experience! Cheers

My daughter wanted a white Christmas and boy did we get one! Enjoyed this hotel, as the staff was very friendly and accommodating, the rooms were very clean with futons (traditional royokan), and Japanese breakfast and dinner were included, which was delicious (you have to like fish!). Very traditional. The ski area is very close and they offer a shuttle. We definitely would go back.
